Don't know if either of you play guitar, but I've found that many musicians hold a healthy respect for players in other genres. Two of my favourite guitarists Clarence White RIP (Byrds) and James Burton ( Elvis, Gram Parsons ) are country pickers and could probably be described as virtuoso players. Same as Jimmy Page ( Led Zep ) another fave - no-one touches his scorching riffing ability and he's a fine accoustic player too. However, none of them could play the Chic - Good Times guitar motif with the same swing and deft tenacity that Nile Rodgers achieved. That really is a hard one to copy well. But I suspect Nile would probably falter at a session if he was handed a B bender Telecaster and requested to play some chicken picking'. It's horses for courses with guitarists - amazingly difficult to be really good in all styles and comparisons across genres very hard to establish.

Clapton joined the Yardbirds in Oct 1963 and left in May 1965. I'd say it's early in his career with the Yardbirds maybe early 64? El always had good barnets in the 60's!

I'm really looking forward to his gig at the 100 Club and that clip has whetted the appetite. I've not been to a showcase at a soul event since Jnr Walker in 1977 so its been a bit of a lay off Times have changed and judging by this clip a lot of care is going into getting the orchestration/ sweetening to sound authentic. I hope the band gives it some welly - I am sure Darrow will be fired up for it in such a legendary venue. Roll on Thursday!

Hi Martin I've got "I Chose To Sing The Blues" on a Greatest Hits album. I'll have a listen to your other recommendation. Have you heard his " Something's Got To Change" ? It's on my you tube channel - link below. I've had over 15,000 hits on his " In The Heat Of The Night " and have had a few comments on it too. Underrated artist by too many soul fans I think and his country stuff is great too!

I only became aware of this recently after hearing it on Richard Hawley's superb Rockabilly Show on Radio 2. Bought a copy on ebay not realising it was a reissue Great record! I've got some other good Ray Charles tracks on my YouTube Channel - click the link below.

Last from me for a while as I've almost run out of records from my collection to add David Ruffin - Each Day Is A Lifetime If you've not heard this before you're in for a treat, I think. A Wagnarian propotioned slice of Motown soul featuring doom laden strings and harpsichord following a sweeping orchestral intro, and David Ruffin , immediately post-breakup, reporting “feeling like a king” while holding his love but now trying to survive day to day, minute to minute, replaying the whole love affair over in his mind, wondering how he’ll make it to the next day and only achieving it by " stayin' a little longer in the shower and fussing around a little more at work " . Perfectly captures the despondency after a break -up. The orchestrated breakdown near the end is totally sublime as are the brackground vocals. Written in 1969 by Henry " Hank " Cosby, Zesses & Fekaris, the latter 2 being involved in writing Time Will pass You By, I believe. The song was brilliantly arranged by David Van DePitte. It was slated for inclusion on the unissued "David" album but fortunately came out on a 45 in 1971. The soundfile for the clip comes from an mp3 I made from Spotify as the the vinyl copy doesn't do justice to the wonderful production.

Very sad news - his great talent as a songwriting artist and performer will be missed by many.

The Violinaires - I Don't Know I bought this recently on the strength of their Gospel Classics connection. I personally really like it but would be interested to know others thoughts. Maybe you have to go to church on Sundays to get into it ? Got the following off the net:- Members of "The Gospel Classics" were previous members of the Violinaires. The members were Melvin Reed, Leo Coney, Wilson DeShields, James Malone, Cleofas Tilmon, Elceanor Debose, and Charles Williams Five of them were previous Violinaires.
