  2. Hi Alan Your dates are a bit confusing. 27/12/13 is on Friday and 28/12/13 is on Saturday. All the best Mike
  3. Mark Chamberlain ( Professor Turnups on here ) who promotes Backstreet in Norwich said on his Facebook page that there is an Xmas do on 27/12/13. It's all ticket so maybe contact him on here if you want to go. Here's what he said;- Fantastic night at the BACKSTREET SOUL CLUB yesterday. Many thanks to the DJs for some cracking music and everyone who came and danced all night especially those who travelled from Cambridge etc. See you all on Friday, Dec 27th for our festive special!!!
  4. Bit of a result - Amazon sent me a spare Motown 7s Box by mistake Also got Bobby Cutchins - I Did It Again and Margie Joseph - Ridin High
  5. Dunno if this fits the bill. Although I lived in London for 20 years until earlier this year I never actually made it to Madame Jo Jo's but my secretary used to go and recommended it. Madame Jo Jo's is on Brewer St right in the heart of Soho so the area is buzzin' on Friday nights. Miss it! https://www.madamejojos.com/club_nights/the_good_foot/reviews/
  6. Greg Dunno if you've heard Biscuit by Portishead but they use a slowed down vocal sample intermittently through the song which sounds a lot like a 45 pitched down to 33rpm. That was genius! Best Mike
  7. At 25.40. A missed opportunity because all the other acts on the show (Teen Town) are miming or singing to backing tapes. https://youtu.be/B1RxYKDMIQU
  8. I'm gonna have to do another search for that thread - sounds like a missed a goodun'
  9. Agreed. I've got the Spencer Wiggins and William Bollinger which is great too. I was playing the Spencer Wiggins recently and realised I'd not listened to the flip and was pleasantly surprised to find the superb cover of Make Me Yours making it a double sider.
  10. Cheers for the reply Nev. It's a great record. Surprised I don't hear it out more often.
  11. Hi everyone Is the Kent Select 45 the first vinyl release of this fantastic track and therefore a legit format for an OVO event? I'm unsure and couldn't find a definitive answer using the SS search facility. Don't worry, I won't be DJing at an OVO event near you at any time soon - I'm just curious . Thanks Mike
  12. David Ruffin - Anything That You Ask For b/w Blinky - How You Gonna Keep It. Blinky track 17 here
  13. I reckon its got to be Jim Pavlack of Soul Congress playing on Eddie Parker's Body Chains. Same guitar hook after the Wah Wah fill which is used in Do It. Anyone agree? Had the opportunity to play Do It out recently and it sounds just fantastic. Still looking for a copy of Body Chains at the right price.
  14. Not heard it before. On first listening it reminded me of Sweet Thing. Just checked DFTMC, and both songs were written by Mickey Stevenson/ ivy Jo Hunter. Those two wrote some fantastic songs together. Cheers for sharing.
  15. This comes up on Wikipeadia. I've not heard the track but will give it a listen. The name "Jenny Ondioline" Jenny Ondioline was used for the title of a 1993 song by British band Stereolab. However, the song's lyrics have nothing to do with Georges Jenny, or the Ondioline.
  16. I think you may have something there with the Ondioline. I've heard of the Clavioline before which Joe Meek used, but not the Ondioline. Having listened to some clips of the Ondioline on You Tube, agree it's possible that was used.
  17. Trammps - Hold Back The Night / Scrub-Board.
  18. Hi Ian I'm not an expert on electronic music but I think its a frequency oscillator which bends the pitch of the note you hear which has a bit of delay/echo added for good measure. I think the Moog had oscillators built into it so it could well be produced on a Moog but i honestly don't know.
  19. Pete I agree with you that the strings on the track sound synthesized. The strings sound is definitely not produced on a Theremin in the 60's as suggested by another poster in this thread. A Theremin sounds nothing like a string ensemble. Its unlikely to be a Mellotron, for the reasons you mentioned earlier, the only other instrument then available, which generated authentic string ensemble sounds from audio tapes when a key is pressed. The first string synthesizer prototype was made by Ken Freeman in England in1969. Lowrey, a division of CMI ( Chicago Musical Instruments ) then produced a variation of his 3rd prototype in 1973 but by the end of the year the Eminent Solina and Crumar Stringman were launched. Their string synth sounds were considered to be warmer and more lush than Lowrey's which then became an also ran in the market. So by the end of 1973 authentic string ensemble sounds could be produced on a relatively inexpensive instrument which most pro keyboard players and many home keyboard players at the time would have owned and would also have been present in most pro studios or hired in cheaply when needed. All this, in my opinion, lends credence to your suggestion that someone had access to a tape recorded in the mid 60's and added the "strings" in mid 70's. Edit Just seen Penny's post and agree with it. https://www.soundonsound.com/sos/feb07/articles/freemanstring.htm
  20. One of my best buys on ebay if not the best. Came upon the track through Ady's " Ever Felt An Idiot " thread where he recommends it. I was also watching a copy of her One More Chance 45 from the same seller which went for £95.00 ( 53 bids ). Maybe that track edges this but not sure. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/380754745217?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649
  21. Surprised David Ruffin - Walk Away From Love isn't in that 1975 chart.
  22. Missed the Anniversary as was abroad, but really looking forward to Saturday.
  23. Good read and thanks for sharing.
  24. Not one for the purists, but they don't get much better than this.
  25. Well if Russ can post up Spring Rain, I'll post this
