Mal, The version I have for sale is the mix with more accentuation on the horns as opposed to the drums. The version on the Numero label that you are after almost sounds like an "unplugged live" version?! Could it be that the acoustic version was a test press demo..... Never heard it before though it seems some of Eddie's releases on the Numero label have been pressed years later e.g. "Wait A Minute" (2007) ?! IMHO the horns on the no address Prix label is lot better than the address label mix.

Spot on there Chalky! Half the problem with Ebay and the likes of Popsike/Collectors Frenzy is they do NOT reflect the true value of how much a record is worth, only how much someone is willing to pay for that particular record. For example on Popsike you'll see someone paid £553 on 26/7/2013 for a white label Quinvy reissue of Don Varner- Tear Stained Face, the seller even states in the listing "This is the 2nd issue 1970s version!" This record can be had for £10+ depending on where you see it up for sale. The person that bought that copy might need their eyes tested. In any case, the value of a record, its subjective, and I reckon any value should be seen through the eyes of common sense really. Admittedly some records in the up to £50 value bracket can be bought for much less but ya looking at mostly trashed G graded records or either lucky with a seller that doesnt know what they are selling and you snap up a bargain! Prices are subjective and i think that people that have been around a while on the scene i.e. dealers, collectors and djs know in their hearts of hearts how much a record is truly worth its just that some of them dealers/sellers out there are darn right cheeky with their prices and auctions which doesnt help in the whole matter in pinning down a universal and definitive price or value on a certain record.

Gave my pennys worth on this post a while back when it first started up, so heres my five pences worth! A list of some tunes that are oldies ( e.g. The Olympics) ,but still relatively cheap to buy but also a lot of tunes that only cost me the average of $10 a piece to buy (mostly from the U.S.). In theory that means that each set of 3 tunes would tally up to around £25 for the 3( bear in mind grading can be lower if they were to be played as part of a dj set. There are IMHO some cracking quality tunes that deserve more plays but like a lot of people have mentioned already there exists a certain air of snobbery in todays northern scene, and most djs dont want an empty dancefloor either! When Wigan closed it was Stafford that was one of the venues that carried the torch on (no pun intended!), some great new tunes were being introduced to the scene at the time, with nearly every single DJ at the venue playing something new and exciting in their own respective way, (bear in mind, then they were 60/70s newies but are now classed as oldies!). Dont get me wrong I been into Northern since the mid 70s and love my oldies, but I reckon some of us have to get off our high horses and look to bringing some fresh material to the scene (e.g. playing some cheapies in the set maybe??) there are literally hundreds of soulful tunes out there that as Ive said before could be tomorrows oldies, with a little imagination and belief it could save the scene from an untimely death of boredom in the forseeable future?! Last but not least, what we've got to remember and question is a lot of cheap tunes nowadays could have hypothetically speaking been thrown into the "Soul Bowl packs" if Soul Bowl were still running today....??? So many oldies from the past came to firstly to us via Mr Anderson, it would be no different today in some way if Soul Bowl still existed. Some members mentioned Tim- I Need Your Love on the Celtex label, it's one I have in the box and one that reminds me of the type of goodies you'd come across in a random Soul Bowl pack of originals! Anyway, so here goes...my expanded list of under £25 sets (in 3's).... Al Greene — Dont Leave me Bettye Swann - Dont Take My Mind Patti Drew - There'll Never Be Another Young Folk — Lonely Girl Dee Dee Sharpe — Baby I love you Decisions - I Cant Forget About you Olympics - Baby Do The Philly Dog Sisters Sledge — Love Dont You Go Through No Changes New People — Im Losing You Priscilla Thomas — Step Aside The Ojays — Im So Glad I Found You Jimmy (Soul) Clark — Tell Her The Tempests Out of My Life Jay & the Techniques — Apple Peaches Pumpkin Pie JJ Barnes — Say It The Five Stairsteps — Dont Waste Your Time Leon Haywood — Its Got To be Mellow Marsha Brody — Right Combination Bobby Jones - Talking bout The Jones Johnny Daye — Good Time The Showstoppers — How Easy Your Heart Forgets Me Darrow Fletcher — I Like The Way I Feel Bobby Harris — Password Is Love Louis Curry — I'll Try Again Tomorrow Timmy Willis — Mr Soul Satisfaction The Spellbinders — We're Acting Like Lovers Melvin Davis — Save It The Ethics — Look At Me Now The Exciters — Number One The Cheers — Mighty Mighty Lover Admittedly, I've always been primarily a collector at heart, and these records were bought by myself in the past few years so the prices may well have gone up in value in some cases but reckon most of them can still be bought cheaply if a bit of shrewdness is applied! Anyway I've said my piece, all five pence worth.....

Apparently, my big break from the scene (sold off my first collection, left it back in mid 80s) has made my eyes nearly pop out, since coming back home to it, in the last several years or more it is indeed mental what people pay for a record. I had an original copy of Wade Flemons - Jeanette from Soul Bowl back in the early 80s, virtually a semi known tune back then, cost the best part of a tenner (mind you it was an original!), what the original goes for now is madness, let alone a piece of bootleg plastic that tries to emulate it with Tony Clarke on the flipside?!? The madness I've noticed has been in fact been insidious for quite some time now, just one look at Popsike will confirm there are some right plonkers that have way too much money or just arent savvy?!??! I've been after an original copy of Herbert Hunter- I Was Born To Love You, had one that cost all of £4 back in 1980ish, but this is insane, take a look at this copy that sold back in 2007, https://www.popsike.com/NORTHERN-SOUL-45HERBERT-HUNTERI-WAS-BORN-TO-LOVE-YOU/330071676173.html and to top it off someone on eBay at the moment has an original issue up for $550!!!! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/361152860678?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT I think the seller is colour blind, that price should be for a white demo, which probably goes for more, and is actually dog rare! Popsike is a great place cos you can have a right laugh, one other sale that made me smile was this one, not sure, its probably on this post already.... https://www.popsike.com/DON-VARNER-Tear-Stained-FaceMojo-Mama-MEGA-RARE-NORTHERN-SOUL-Quinvy-45-Hear/400533158324.html Did someone really pay $810 for that Don Varner??!! And the seller has actually stated in the listing "This is the 2nd issue 1970s version" Begs belief....need to sit down now and try and get my head round it all?!

Hmm...I always thought it was later than a few weeks before the pink copies came out...? Maybe 2 years is a bit of an exaggeration.... I know that Ian dewhirst had a copy at some point back then and also know it was Anderson that sold the pink ones in the 70s at Soul Bowl, and ya right it was Anderson that gave Levine a copy here in the UK. Thing is with this topic theres quite a bit of hearsay and its such a long time ago that memories become less sharp!! Would be great to clear up the whole different release numbers thing though??!
-
Kegsy, Good point maybe I should have carefully chosen my words so here goes...the pink Red Coach copy is a "second press or reissue" or whatever you want to call it. "Tlscapital" hit the nail on the head and elaborated a little where I left off in my original post. The pink second press/reissue was released 2 years later. It was first played at the Mecca by Ian Levine who so say discovered it on one of his U.S. record hunting trips, that copy he had was a white demo. The only first press originals are white demos, hope that explains my original post a little more? Great record by the way, doesnt really matter in what format you own it really all down to personal choice! cheers
-
Dave, the pink copy of Carstairs is a reissue. Only original is the white demo, and even that was booted but can easily tell as the poor quality label gives it away. Originals have the matrix "STERLING" both machine and scratched in, both systems were used at the time they were pressed. The pink issue has always been known to be a reissue, it was released due to the popularity of the record in the UK in the early 70s. What you pay for it is up to you, but personally I'd hang on and wait for an original to surface as the pink ones go for silly money at times

You dont even need specs to see that bad whitish groove wear at the end of the vinyl playing area, looks like someone has tried to cut a different track with a nail rather than a stylus!!! Shocking condition, does not correlate with the written description one bit!! i.e. my interpretation of "light minor marks" would be "paper scuffs" The seller should give up selling and go into a career where eyesight and possibly hearing is not acutely needed maybe?!

Maj Lance Ain't No Soul Demo - Is This A Bootleg/2Nd Issue?
Foi replied to paultp's topic in Look At Your Box
If i remember rightly, Okeh "styrene" originals can either have the ZTSC matrix machine stamped or scratched in as it depended on the pressing plant ( regions in USA differed) as long as it has the large 45 then its an original. However, with "vinyl" copies, originals have to have the large 45 and most importantly be definitely machine stamped...to my knowledge I dont think any Okeh "vinyl" originals have scratched in matrixes due to the plates that were used at the pressing plant (maybe Chicago as opposed to the major plant in L.A.??). Therefore most Okeh "vinyl" (not styrene) white demos with scratched in matrixes and big 45s are deemed to be boots.....might be wrong afterall, only been in the collecting game for 37 years or so?! Hope this helps clarify a little more...?! -
