  1. I've got the 120/121 release on the white/green label, and it is a slightly slower, more x-over type cut than the 1976 114/115/119 Mecca spin, I actually prefer the later (1977) cut. According to Tim Brown's price guide, Maycon 115 came out twice, first purple, then orange label. I Personally think that all the releases are fantastic examples of the best of seventies northern.
  2. Is it smokey by Lou d. Washington ??
  3. Anyone else notice how many of these hated records are old, overplayed, played out oldies .... just goes to show how many venues are spinning the predictable, worn out, boring, and totally shite sounds all forward thinking soul collectors don't need to hear anymore !!
  4. Don't forget, there is a difference between records you have always disliked, and those that have been spun so much, you have grown to dislike.
  5. Several versions of this wonderful tune, the great Spyder Turner, excellent Richie Havens crossover version, and there is an obscure white group version on a Detroit label that appears on Ebay sometimes
  6. James Brown ' People wake up ' LP track only ? No it's not !
  7. Actually THE CHANTELLS with the AQUA LADS ' I'LL NEVER KNOW ' on AQUA 8-8755, just got one arrived from US today, cost me $150, well worth it, awesome sound, played covered by Carl Fortnum, Butch, etc in the early 90's. Label is from Kannapolis, N. Carolina i believe, and must be the same Aqua lads as on the Gold Bee release, as both credita R. Edwards (tho' Gold Bee 45 has N.Y. address). Quite a hard one I think, can only find 3 that have appeared on Popsike.
  8. One wonderful moment - Shakers (One terrible 45) We were made for each other - Terrible Tom ( Another terrible noise, but liked by many) Seeds - Pushing too hard (Played at Wigan '81 by R.W. - good Psyche sound, bloody terrible soul sound)
  9. What about the great and not too well known Soulful modern mover ' KEEP SMILIN ' from EDDIE JAY & RAY on PPL.
  10. Delreys inc. on Tampete ............Think I will offer it on here as a mini auction, as several people have expressed an interest in buying it. Sounds like it's the proper 1st one, with 5444 in top side deadwax, and 5544 in flip side deadwax, very shiny, clean condtion, plays excellent. Best offer by end of day, Thursday 3rd Jan will secure. UK bidders only, add £4.50 to send insured. (Paypal as a gift). Thanks, Jez.
  11. Saw that the damaged copy of Margaret Little on Genebro finally sold for $650 (£402) on Ebay - seems like a massive amount of money for a 45 missing a significant part of its vinyl !?! I know it's a very desirable and rare (5 or 6 copies ?) record, but i don't know why anyone would want to pay that sort of money for a 45 in that condition, ' first 7 or 10 grooves missing ' - probably losing up to 15 secs or so off the disc. Perhaps another ' Trophy record ' that a cheque book collector wants in his collection, irrespective of actual condition ?? At the end of the day it is his cash, but seems bloody crazy to me. Any comments, anyone ?
  12. Well thanks for that, even more confusion, the Destination Unknown side has 5444 in deadwax, the flip side ' Crying in my sleep ' has 5544 in the dead wax !!
  13. If that is right, my copy is the lighter, brighter, green, and would seem to be the real deal with the small M2c (or something) stamp in the deadwax.
  14. I have one of these, always assumed it to be a boot / counterfeit, but now confused. It ihas the brighter green label, as opposed to the darker Sherwood green of the original, but it seems to have the small M2c (or something, tough to read even with a magnifying glass) stamp in the deadwax, as suggested by Manship's and T. Brown's price guide books, signifying an original copy. Any ideas or suggestions, anyone ? Thanks, Jez.
  15. The slower, down tempo, or beat-ballad 60's atmospheric or big city sound that reached max popularity around the late Stafford period seems to have been out of favour for a long time now, apart from the odd spin or two, still get a few down the 100 Club, like Lou Johnson's version of Roy Hamilton. Personally, I love these kind of tracks, but think you'll hear less and less at various venues as we progress? thru' the earlier parts of the 21st century. I think a lot of the great, known and lesser known 60's Soul items, whether they are fast, mid-tempo, or slower are sounding very dated now (which, of course, they bloody well are) !! Lovely things to have in your collection at home, such as the Garland Green's, Roy C's ' Gone gone ', etc, but most venues and dance floor expressionists seem to favour quicker tempo later 60's and 70's, and slightly more funky soul mover-groovers.
  16. Bought a few interesting looking 45's at a local Xmas church fete yesterday in Spalding, inc James Duke ' Hold on ' on UK Creole, played it at home and thought it was a pretty good 80's soul track. Not in Record Collector guide, so looked on Popsike to see if any interest / sales, astonished to find out it's a ' Boogie 80's holy grail ' ! ! All the copies on there seem to have been on 12", up to $500. Anyone know the value of the seven inch 45 I found. Hopefully more than the 25p I paid the clerger !
  17. Bought quite a decent copy off Ebay about a year ago, great tune, but had to pay a lot for it. About $11.
  18. Got a nice New Zealand Fontana issue of ' Getting mighty crowded ' Betty Everett, also a few South African Tamla Motown 45's (very similar to UK issues) such as ' Wherever I lay my hat ' M. Gaye, and ' 7 rooms of gloom ' Four Tops. Also have a nice pic sleeve French 4 Tops EP ' Bernadette ' which has the great ' Then ' on it. Won on Ebay a South American (think Argentine) copy of the Tamiko Jones version of ' Cross my heart ' which plays at 33rpm and is a solid centre 45.
  19. Most copies of Jimmy Mack on Hamster are 2nd (legal) issues, 1st press is quite a hard one, there are a few differences between them on close inspection, the most obvious being the title ' A woman is SO hard to understand ' (2nd iss) / ' A woman is hard to understand ' (1st iss). Also the original issue label is more of an olive green, rather than the emerald green of the re-release. Price wise, 2nd prob around £15 (but often sold for more as originals), 1st issue £70 upwards ?
  20. Ginger taylor getting the balance just right ?? Give me a break, he is Mr.Predictable, playing the old tried, tested, and TIRED !!
