  1. i think the key to it is that if you don't want to hear the "predictable" stuff you can move on to other more "specialist" clubs ..... but if you do like what you get you can stay. i agree with the original post . some people would like that. we do something similar and it works for us. lots of familair big soul sounds mixed in with a few lesser knowns ...... plus some funk, latin, beat etc. accessible enough for most i'd guess.
  2. we like our guest DJ (that's just the one!) to either play 2 X 30 min slots (one early and one late) or to fit in with the two of us as residents on a 5 record rotation. this keeps us as residents playing a large chunk of the evening as we know our crowd best but allows a reasonable amount of different tracks to be played by our guest each month. it does mean that there is less continuity with the music styles but thats a feature of our nights anyway ..... its all mixed up and works for us. it wouldn't for everyone i'm sure. as for payment ..... well, we generally go for a fixed package. £100 + free beer + we can put DJ's up if we need to. in some cases, where necessary we've paid a bit of extra travelling expenses. not sure how this relates to most soul nights but i think its a reasonable package. it must be difficult for promoters who have to pay 4 or 5 guests though.
  3. we use a mixture of these things at hipshaker ...... we offer most guest DJ's 2 x 30 min slots (or a solid hour if they insist) which is sort of our preferred way of doing it. an early and a late slot as described before. as residents though we (me and the other chap) usually play 5 records at a time each all night .... keeps it fresh, keeps us involved and interested. but some guests join in with this arrangement instead of the 30 min slots. also makes it a bit more of a laugh as we often end up playing one at a time each towards the end.
  4. doesn't bother me too much either (if it is within the reasonable realms of actual cost + a bit extra) if i am actually getting good service e.g. prompt, well packed, new package rather than used if that is what i'm paying for etc.
  5. i've just been looking into cartridges etc. currently using ortofon concorde DJ ones which are ok: https://www.djstore.co.uk/cgi-bin/item.pl?i...ts-ap5555yaaaaa but thinking of trading up to the top of the range scratch ones. not intending to do any scratching obviously but want to reduce the chances of needle burn from cuing: https://www.djstore.co.uk/cgi-bin/item.pl?i...ts-aahamabaccaa
  6. i find it all a bit clinical and organised myself ...... and i'm rarely sober enough to remember what i've played and in what order. what did everyone do before internet playlists? i also find it a little bizarre when i see posts that say "we play this" ... they list loads of tracks. do they work it all out in advance? i like to play as the mood and/or dancefloor takes me ..... and i'd like DJ's i pay to hear to do the same.
  7. yep ... kool and the gang (the track) for me too. i play it out sometimes .... does fine. i love jungle boogie too.
  8. i like it. often give it a spin when i'm playing out. goes down well with a mixed crowd.
  9. ...... its the main riff, the bit at the start after the drum bit ...... but slowed right down.
  10. i can't see a huge problem ... by 2007 it will be the same everywhere. and i'm sure all those other places where they have a ban cope. i was in rome about 2 weeks ago and it all seemed fine ... very nice in the bars/restaurants for me as a non smoker.
  11. just heard ............. definitely landslide in there. red dress i think its called.
  12. hit ............... love a bit of salsoul.
  13. cliff does a decent version of "ain't nothing but a houseparty" on his live at the talk of the town album.......... and i love peggy lee's version of dock of the bay.
  14. very sad ....... i love some of his stuff ..... will be giving a few a spin tonight.
