  1. and a clip of our occasional dancers ..... onstage dancing to the contours:
  2. and a bit soul content on this one. but not the sort of dancing/atmosphere you're used to :
  3. we've put a few clips up ..... hope this works. a sort of PR type vid of the iow festival weekend: hmmm ...... having a mare ....... can't seem to embed it!!
  4. christ .... there's some miserable gits here. what you scared of .... a little discussion about some records that are not by "proper soul singers".
  5. actually, i like the track "Ain't No Other Man" (with the happy soul with a hook sample i believe) ..... quite funky!
  6. totally agree with what's written about credit ...... and would add to it that its just so easy to buy using plastic through a website or ebay. no need to phone or physically go anywhere .... and you can do it at any time of the day or night. agree with the person who said soundclips were a good idea ...... so much stuff i've never heard that i could be buying i'm sure. and the more professional the seller the more likely i am to buy. agree with what has been said about john manship's service ..... would also like to say that craig moerer deserves a mention in the same way. great website, fantastic service .... grades spot on (sometimes underestimates condition). i am always willing to pay a little extra if i can trust the seller and it is easy to buy.
  7. rowly pointed me in this direction ..... anyone mentioned ray dullard "the giffer"
  8. there is at least one deck you can get that has the +/- speed change but doesn't alter the pitch of the vocals i believe.
  9. completely agree richard ........ but those other things you mention there might be a bit of a mystery to some DJ's. the amount of DJ's I've seen who don't seem to know what the gain is for!
  10. drop tainted love ..... it's one of our top "ladies tunes" (along with the clapping song)
  11. ...... its not often i get called an "authority" on here rowly!!
  12. i'm not sure why there are so many people hung up on whether the jam have anything to do with northern soul. has anyone said they have? apart from being into the jam and then getting into soul .... or weller's stated interest? as for jam stuff being played ...... town called malice went down a storm @ IOW (played by a guest dj) .... not normally played though.
  13. but i would also agree some harder edged funky/r&b tracks mixed in would work usually.
  14. well ..... in my experience ..... you've got to mix it. enough "commercial" .... and a few underground tracks. most of those mentioned are sure fire winners at our nights .... that have a fair few students in.
  15. my suggestions in a crowd with students ... as has been said too ... try to chuck in some well known (by covered, samples, films, adverts etc) stuff: tainted love shake a tailfeather do you love me money higher and higher california soul 25 miles land of 1000 dances the clapping song covers like: soul man - ramsey lewis midnight hour - little mac dock of the bay - peggy lee hard to handle - patti drew satisfaction - otis redding add few of rowly's suggestions too. plus a bit of latin etc. plus some more motown.
  16. "aaahhhhhhhnd the winnur of the leg o lamb this week issssss .......... noomber 123 ..... lesss be avinyer ....... eh, eaar sheiss .... well duun phylis loov ....... aaahnnnd the next track ....... (cue long winded description) ..... ray pollard .... the driftuuuuurrrrr!" actually, i'd quite like to see someone like tim westwood on the mic ... in a working mens club ..... be hilarious i'm sure.
  17. save the mic for announcing the meat raffle
  18. i think you're right on that .... played the iow scooter rally a few years ago.
  19. craig moerer does it at about $5.25 - $5.50. but maybe some charge for al sorts like the cost of box, stiffeners, walking to post office, time etc etc.
  20. i think both the boomtown rats and brownsville station covered barefootin'.
  21. i love a bit of the funk. i always think its al one big continuum anyway ....... r&b/soul/funk .... all on the same line somewhere. and james .... i love the ann robinson track myself.
  22. if you go to reckless this is just round the corner .... a few originals normally in stock: SOUNDS OF THE UNIVERSE 7 Broadwick Street Soho London W1F 0DA England
  23. i've got them both ...... but i've got to say i love the cold blood version and find barbara lynn a little tame in comparison, altohugh i like that too. sounds great blasted out through a decent sound system.
  24. i loved it when i saw it on tv ...... a fantastic giggle.
