i use one of these most of the time. very lightweight and padded well ..... walked with it easily last night to play:

i've also got a variety of full flight cases. some of the ones that have padding stuck on have started to come unstuck. i thnk the best one i have is just wood on the inside.
even better!!
the ones i have i bought in the soul jazz shop in london while up there .... but the link i posted is from a shop about 5 mins walk from me, which is very handy!
we play some of this type stuff to non northern crowds and it goes down a storm ...... for many i guess there is a bit of a recognition even if they don't completely know the tracks. and many of the tracks will appeal to new people for exactly the same reasons they appealed to you .... because they are good, catchy tunes.
not sure about your proper "northern crowds" though.
russ ....... if you are looking for a real big venue i think south parade pier in portsmouth/southsea is fantastic. it has an 800 main side and a 400 smaller side. both rooms have wooden dancefloors ...... and there are truckloads of b&b's/hotels nearby. i couldn't comment on music policy too much as i don't attend allnighters ................ however, if you wanted to attract a few younger/local people too (numbers = £'s = break even/profit) you could put something like us or other local clubs/DJ's in the small side. that might water down your original idea a bit though.
i've had a few done ....... mainly LP tracks to stop me having to lug them around. also got Bo Junior - Coffee Pot done as the one i have (like all copies i have been told by a couple of dealers) sounds like it has a fire burning in the background.
i use similar shaped ones ... but plastic in bright colours (red, yellow, green, blue) from the soul jazz shop in london. a couple of quid each i think. not as heavy though.
totally agree with your first points ...... but that was what i was trying to say a bit too. as i never had to endure the hassle in the 80s it never informed what we did. but yes ..... from what i know it would have been a nightmare to put on in the 80s.
i don't have a problem with clubs catering for specific crowds (partly its what we do anyway ..... we're a 60s club) but i don't think adults disliking other adults because of what they're into is very healthy.
cheers bearsy ........................ i must admit to not coming from a scooter background (i did the teenage mod/quadrophenia thing in '79 but punk was more my thing) which probably helped when we started over the iow. we didn't have the hang ups about clothes that some events did. didn't want to advertise "smart dress only" or "no combats" etc. from what i believed that attitude was a bit stuck in the 80s. we thought that there was a place for a club like ours that had a definite music policy ... but without the need for dress restrictions. and that there would be enough people who would go with that. and it does seem to work. we have the "respect for others" policy which seems to do fine ...... and we would ask people to leave if we found that they were causing problems. i do like to see people dressing up though .... whatever their style.
i find the whole "them and us" thing a bit ridiculous. soulies/mods/scooterists .... whoever, looking down on others ....... grown men and women .... bizarre/juvenile. i see bits of that reflected on forums now and then .... and in scootering. i don't think its the majority of people though.
as a rally ..... i love the iow. there is a great "buzz" about the place.
totally agree with points made by bearsy and teapot. not enough "live and let live" attitude. too many people with just one view that they feel must be right and that everyone else must be wrong. people should involve themselves in these things to the extent that they want to i think.
i often use the pitch control where i feel necessary, both up and down. i think sometimes you have to bear in mind that many records were not aimed at a dancefloor as such when they were recorded ... but that is how they get used now.
and ... as for the gain control richard ...... i've seen a fair few DJ's who don't seem to think it should be used. shockingly bad volume levels ... all over the show.
totally agree with this ....... i think many of these so called overplayed oldies are catchier and more immediate .... and therefore more accessible for those new to northern soul (or more or less any genre for that matter). sometimes i think people who have been into a scene and delved ever more deeply forget a bit about what sort of thing it was that first got them into it. not saying that there aren't catchy and immediate new tracks around though .... probably just less of them and more that are an acquired taste.
the magma bags i ordered from germany ....... i got the green camouflage ones. i think it was from here:
https://www.deejaydiscount.de/index.php?cPa...1a2b8c790babcf5
they are pretty sturdy, obviously not as strong as a flight case, but much easier and lighter to transport.
probably a fair bit of truth in what you say for most soul nights and guest DJ's .... but we carry loads of records just in case (at one stage between 2 of us we had 2 x 600 boxes, 2 x 200 boxes ... and an album box each too!!!!! .... just in case ) ... and we only have one guest DJ.
i've got these now though:

https://www.magma-bags.de/web/e/produkte/singlebag_150.php3
still use the heavy duty trolley for getting in and out of venues with boxes.
well ... they're pretty sturdy dave .... and good value compared to £15 or £20 for a lightweight luggage one.
i got through a couple of the normal suitcase carrier ones .... too flimsy. got one like this in the end:
get this one here:

blimey!! ..... go on, name names mischief!!
similar to list above ...... we've had
molly
shifty
kev roberts
dave evison
sean chapman
pete tebbutt
rob messer
at hipshaker IOW rally over the years ..... all played decent stuff.
i think people need to expect it to be different to ns events but there is quality nevertheless (as shown from the crown lin-up at IOW too)
