i can echo what most have said about technics ....... well worth the money. i'd also say get a good mixer, one with a gain control so you can adjust the levels before you play the next track. learn how to use it and how to cue records properly. we use an allen and heath mixer and can't fault it ........ we also use a pioneer one sometimes. used "bedroom

I like the two below ........ maybe take "the" out. when we started we tried to emphasise the dancing nature of our night ........ and did what john has suggested, finally finding a track called hipshaker on an acid jazz compilation.

bit late to this but .... worst - years ago, playing an early set about 9.30 or 10.00-ish ........ a half full pint lands on the deck with the record playing. me looking around, no obvious culprit (i was looking for a bloke shouting at me, calling me a w***ker or something obvious like that). next record was cued up so i started it. barmaid comes up to the front of stage and points out a girl saying it was her. i jump over the barrier (we play on a stage with a band type barrier), trot over to her to remonstrate but just as i get to her i slip on the pool of beer around her and knock her over ....... as i'm scrambling up something possessed me to start dragging her across the floor and end up going out of the door into the corridor where there's loads of people coming in and putting their coats in etc (must have been a welcoming sight!) ....... and dragging her out of the front door with the security looking at me like i'm some kind of idiot! needless to say, it was suggested later that i let them do that sort of thing if necessary. Best - playing to our IOW festival crowd late on when there are about a thousand in and they'll sing along when they can (mostly obvious stuff though, tainted love, aint no mountain high enough etc ....... but nevertheless sounds great with everyone singing. also, warm up slot for paul weller on the IOW, 8000 crowd with them singing along just before he came on. Bizarre - warm up for girls aloud and the saturdays the same weekend as weller. loads of kids in the crowd wondering what on earth was going on ....... although a few mums seeming to enjoy it.

How Does Someone Win A Record On Ebay At The Same Price I Bid?
hipshaker 05 replied to Swifty's topic in All About the SOUL
did they bid earlier? -
i was in berlin recently for a weekend with a few mates. we spent the last bits of a couple of nights in a bar called soulcat. they seem to have DJs most nights ......... it was reggae & ska one night .... and r&b/soul the next. nice little place.

magma 7" trolley case has a flap pocket on the front. i usually carry about 5 or 6 LPs in mine. holds about 300 45's.
-
there was a motown bar (thats the name) on the sea front along there somewhere. i think between torremolinos and fuengirola.

Calling All Southern/south Coast Soulies
hipshaker 05 replied to Russ Vickers's topic in All About the SOUL
Aside from all the stuff about DJ line-up I reckon the aforementioned South Parade Pier would make a great venue if it could be filled .... and if it is still in good condition (I've not been in there for a while). As I'm sure you know though, it's big. Main side I think has 800 capacity. Personally I like multi-roomed events. Northern room & funk room maybe, perhaps a reggae/ska room or something. However, I appreciate that sort of thing might take it away from what you're trying to create. -
Yes, like that .... but the camouflage version posted above. Great bag. Light but protects really well.
-
magma softbag would probably do it, holds 150..... could fill it with 70 and put some clothes in too. smaller you can get bags from soul jazz, jazzman and daptone i think that hold 50 or so.

Carrying Case For 45S (25-50 Count)

you're a bit like me then, with the trying of all sorts. my worst idea was a 600 metal flight case. back breaker when full. -
Carrying Case For 45S (25-50 Count)

"he's got the lot" ................... as brucie used to say. i much prefer them to fard cases. i also use the magma reinforced cases too, the 150 0ne for travelling with (as i'm much less decisive than being able to just carry 50 records most of the time) plus the 300 trolley one for our own gigs. they are very good. https://www.juno.co.uk/products/341729-01.htm https://www.juno.co.uk/products/magma-7-single-bag-300-trolley-the-ultimate-trolley-for-45s-capacity-for-approximately-300-x-7-singles-camouflage-green/291270-01/ -

surprised to hear that you get told what to play at "major events", we just book who we think are great DJs and let them play what they want/choose. of course, i'd guess they take account of the crowd in front of them when selecting their sets. and for the last couple of years we have also booked estabslished northern soul clubs for our guest club room, who likewise choose their guests and playlists.

good to meet you briefly friday night john ....... i was the one that didn't look like lemmy! like you i think i spent most time in the let it rock tent. mainly watching bands but caught a couple of bits of keb darge spinning rockabily stuff and a female DJ (who didn't seem to be advertised by name on the roster) spinning some nice r&b-ish stuff around midnight on saturday night.
-
had a great weekend too ............ like mick i saw the damned who i thought were a bit half and half. the earlier punky stuff was great but the rest went on a bit. loved the polecats .... and jessie and the orbits. buzzcocks good, liked earth wind and fire and a bit of heaven 17. soul casino was an excellent venue too!

the site is looking good from some of the pics they've released. high st: the curry house: the cocktail bar: and the leisure dome ... complete with orange carpet:

definitely something different, a real good mix of styles/eras. if i wasn't in the camper van i'd be tempted to travel up and back from portsmouth. its only about a 30 min drive ........ and a guy i know locally has chartered an old red routemaster bus to go up and back on the saturday. i think the event itself has done the same for people arriving by train. of course, they could always get a cab!
-
another vote here for the soundburger. i use it through my home hifi as well as for record hunting. got the columbia set up too, they're good ...... but carrying this lot about a little heavy
-
i'm going too. we'll be playing a set on one of the evenings but i think i would be going anyway. its a very ecelctic mix with some well respected acts. i go to the goodwood revival probably every other year and if it is anywhere near as well done as that it will be great. there will be a whole lot more on offer than just the music too. as for prices, its about average festival price. not really the (mainstream) superstar acts you get at many festivals but its not about that with this ...... and the other stuff on offer should make it a great experience. will be in a camper van though, i think my tent days are gone
-
i wouldn't take is as a reflection of the south in general. as mischief said first of all its a scooter rally, then not really a reflection of your average scooter rally as it is the biggest one in the calendar ...... and overall more like a festival of sorts with the many different venues. as for the music in the talk of the south room, that was purely the responsibility of sean and pete ... who both undoubtedly know their stuff. i popped in and out and it always looked busy and they ramped up the atmosphere towards the end. as for our event itself, bear in mind that we run events in ryde throughout the year and attract a small-ish number of locals i'm sure to the rally event. and also it is well attended so there will be a variety of people. the drinks on the floor issue, something different. we told security to look out for this so will bear in mind for next year. imber - nice to meet you, enjoyed a chat with you and your mate about patrick hernandez and the 2nd world war german occupation of the iow!

i've got a soundburger connected to my hifi system, which does just fine, connected to minipod speakers (in the pic). a weltron for special occasions: also have this set up ready to go anywhere: none of them particularly good sound quality though. for DJ-ing we, like many others, use technics.
