  1. I completely agree Billy ...... if its a good record its good whatever. Obviously been played a lot over the years but doesn't make it a crap record .......... of course I'm sure if motown hadn't put out the UK version a lot more people would still like it. Rare=Good????
  2. hmm .............. i still play it
  3. i agree with both daved and miff. the dreaded influx of new people looking for the next trendy thing won't happen because i don't think it could be made trendy enough ....... the dreaded outsiders will never come along to the sort of venues that many soul nights are held in or be enticed by a lot of the marketing/publicity ..... or put up with hearing some of the stuff that is currently most popular due to its rarity. BUT .... it wouldn't be such a bad thing, a little new blood. a bit like the scooter scene, long term survival will only be possible if there are a few newies attracted.
  4. i gave back door santa a spin on christmas eve ... also the stevie wonder got played along with james brown's soulful christmas.
  5. does quality mean rarer? .... or can some of the played out stuff be quality? ..... i prefer a nice mix myself, plenty that i know and some i don't.
  6. i'm personally not that fussed about big name DJ's. I'm more impressed by those that can actually work a dancefloor .... name or not. I'd also say that promotors/clubs can build a reputation for putting quality events on ... and thus draw people in. I also like a decent venue ..... I'm not a fan of "social club" type places. And a decent flyer always helps.
  7. giffer country and western
  8. Love the original salesmanship ......... makes a change from "stafford biggie" .... "floorpacker all over europe" .... "reactivated oldie" ....etc etc "REGINALD MILTON SOUL CLAP IS BACK LASHAWN M- £10 Terrible record...really, really bad. Have a listen to how bad records can get. Abysmal. Appealing to Reginald Milton completists or fans of child music, only (presumably) There's no excuse for playing this to anyone if you choose to buy it...still cost you a tenner if you want it, though. Nutters. "
  9. fantastic davie ....... love both of them. also patti drew's version of hard to handle.
  10. i don't mind seeing auction links .... i have a look sometimes. more likely to look if there's an indication of what's there. not sure about the greed point ............ i often see dealer prices fluctuating and as records get popular the price goes up .... seemingly little to do with the rarity of the records ..... not much different in my opinion.
  11. now there's a couple of sets i like rowly .................. i love that little jewel track.
  12. i like that supremes version of money.
  13. I'm sure that would pull a crowd
  14. i guess some DJ's feel they are on a bit of a mission. I personally get pretty bored if I don't hear at least a few tunes I know. I'd say its probably quite easy for a DJ to play a set of obscure/rare stuff (providing they own it of course) because, from what I've seen at times on my visits to soul nights, they are sometimes happy with dancefloors containing only a handful of people. More skillful I'd say mixing tracks that fill a floor with tracks that are rare/unknown and keeping the dancefloor full .................... all in my humble opinion of course. I'd be embarrassed if I was playing and only a handful of people were dancing at apeak time of the evening.
  15. i think i sort of agree chalky, hence i use vinyl myself ................ its just that i don't specifically concern myself about it when out.
  16. I certainly have Kolla ...... and understand what you say. My point is only, that when I'm out at a club I don't tend to concern myself with format but I'm more concerned about quality and selection of tracks ..... like many people are I'm sure. When I DJ it is vinyl for me. I like the physical aspect of it that even a CD doesn't have let alone a laptop. As for the question directed at promoters about laptop DJ's ......... I'm not sure really. I'd be interested in seeing it done. In our 6 years of running Hipshaker we've only ever had Guest DJ's playing vinyl except for Paul Tunkin from Blow Up who wanted to play some pre release tracks on CD's being put out by his label. No-one in the crowd noticed. We don't let Guest DJ's use microphones in Portsmouth though ...... as Pete Tebbutt found out to his horror the other night
  17. like fenman .... when i'm out a club my first prority is that i want to hear decent music and i don't go nosing around the decks to see if its a computer, cd's or vinyl decks. when playing i like to use vinyl myself ........ favourite labels .. boot ... sos ... eric ....
  18. try these. https://www.hitechtickets.co.uk good quality tickets, not sure about the price as the venue we use deal with the tickets and charge us £25 ....... they buy tickets from them for about 25 events each month and probably get a good deal.
