  1. we change our needles too often probably but better safe than sorry. If i DJ anywhere else or on anyone elses decks I always put our cartridges on ........... i even use my own headphones too as i've come across some pretty bad ones elsewhere.
  2. as has been said ............... you can't go wrong with a nice heavy duty one. i've got a couple, a 200 and a hernia inducing 600. rivets and holes for padlocks ..... no problems so far and if i swing them around whatever i am swinging them near wil come off worse. as i remember the 200 was about £70 and the 600 about £110. money well spent. and what was money equally well spent was £45 on one of these trolleys to cart the bloody 600 one around on: https://www.nuloop.com/details_dj_e.php?art=31423
  3. i like the sound of that ..... a continually busy dancefloor (and i love me and baby brother too). most of the northern soul nights i've been to have had very erratic dancefloors. busy (ish) one minute ... empty the next, which i always find a little strange ......... but, i am a southerner i suppose
  4. actually .............. it's not only the records that would go ... the damn boxes would too!!
  5. time to chuck out those nasty, scratchy old 45's ?? https://www.gearjunkies.com/news_info.php?news_id=731
  6. well, we definitely live on the same planet ........ but you might have bad taste, more likely though that we have different taste. I can say in all honesty that it has gone down a storm when I've played it ..... and it went down i would say because it has a great beat and is catchy. Most of the people dancing would not have had a clue who it was either. Of course ... if you don't like it as a track thats fair enough .... I'm just saying that it goes down a storm where i play. The first place I heard it was in a club called SOUL in stockholm ...... and there also being played to a full dancefloor.
  7. i love the jack hammer 45 .... both sides ..... definitely rocks .... and most importantly fills the dancefloor where I live ... fantastic!!
  8. thought it was good last night ........... loved everyone's reaction when they mentioned george clinton. i'm no fan of parliament but its nice to see a series that puts it al in chronological order. Love the funk though ......... and JB could get almost any dancefloor going I reckon. would have been nice to see some marva whitney, bobby byrd etc etc ..... but we could all list hundreds of lesser known artists. I think the series is great.
  9. revilottasoul ............. stay with us, its not all bad. There is a bit of a cliquey feeling sometimes, especially when there's talk of (dare I mention the whole names?) KR, IL & RW and some feel they need to stick the boot in ............. but, generally, a pretty friendly bunch and a great site.
  10. starting with landslide i think is a good idea too ............ or maybe some motown like "love is likean itching in my heart" which pounds along ..... or even something very obvious like "nowhere to run" which has a nice thumping intro. heavy beats and uptempo is probably the way to go ............ and end with california soul. even though its slow most will recognise and like it i'd say.
  11. a stormer from me: love me one more time - jimmy holiday if he's new to it go for catchy stuff i reckon too.
  12. some tracks from hipshaker in portsmouth last night: solomon burke - stupidity richard berry - have love will travel charles sheffield - its your voodoo working soul sisters - think about the good times packers - soul time louie chachere - the hen s.o.u.l. - burning spear jimmy mcgriff - the worm toots & the maytals - 5446 was my number marcia griffiths - feel like jumping patti drew - hard to handle otis redding - can't turn you loose peggy lee - dock of the bay etta james - mellow fellow wilson picket - land of 1000 dances wynder k frog - i'm a man that's a few of them .... not in that order though.
  13. in terms of idiots at rallies etc .... I think you have to get it all into perspective. at a rally like the IOW you get anything up to about 8000 scooterists ..... bound to be a few idiots in that number. I think the most people I've ever seen at a NS venue is the 800 or so at Crossfire when I went (and thats not strictly NS), although I know there are some bigger nights. Most I've been to though are much smaller therefore perhaps less potential for idiots. My contact with other scooterists locally and at dos/events/rallies etc has brought me no grief whatsoever.
  14. I think you have to try to pay guest DJ's a decent amount but make sure it is within your budget. We usually pay a flat rate of £100 to DJ's for a guest spot ....... if we have a particularly good night we try to boost that, especially if they've travelled some way. At the very minimum you should cover their expenses if they are happy for that arrangement. We also add little sweeteners like putting them up at one of our homes and free beer on the night.
  15. He's on again tonight. Requests like "have you got any giffer soul?" ..... or ... "can you stop playing that crap?" always warmly received
  16. i love an instrumental myself: bo junior - coffee pot winstons - amen brother wynder k frog - i'm a man ......... a few favourites.
  17. lovely fella??? ............. you're getting us confused actually, if you listen to the show i think you can e-mail him direct.
  18. RADIO HIPSHAKER .............. Hipshaker radio show every Monday night between 10pm and midnight on Real Love Radio: https://realloveradio.moonfruit.com/ I can't entirely vouch for the playlist as the show is mostly hosted by my hairy DJ partner .... spinning selections from his collection .... but expect some soul ... a bit of funk ... some soundtracks ..... maybe some jazz ... a little beat perhaps. Coming soon, Hipshaker Live .... The Movie!
  19. i think we were typing at the same time .... one or two points similar. like i said though .... we're not really a northern club ... a mixed bag so it works for us nicely. having written all that about requests though ...... we don't get many these days ... i like to think its because people are happy with what we play
  20. we love a request st hipshaker. we always have a nice big piece of paper and a pen to write them on. if its requested, we have it and it fits we will usually play it. often we play it as the next track ........... although that can be difficult as we play a broad range of 60s music, not just soul. sometimes people request tracks that we think will empty the floor (perhaps too slow or something) .... if that happens i normally give a pained expression (to emphasise the difficulty of playing the said track) .... explain and offer an alternative or ask for an alternative. i agree with the point about some nights having too many DJ's. there are 2 of us and we always have one guest DJ .... thats 3 DJ's for 5 hours. we give the guest DJ and hour (or more if they want) which means they don't have to worry too much about requests because we can cover that angle. the guest DJ's are booked to play their selections and offer something different for our crowd each month .... although obviously we want them to keep the dancefloor full. we are not usually disappointed .... recently dundeedavie played his selections to a packed dancefloor.
