mmm...nice - a mate recently picked up a M- demo for $5, wonder how many issues there are lurking unfound. Jerry.
-
Moan moan moan...why did I ever sell my Charades issue all those years ago?... Jerry.
-
It certainly has power - the Spector "Wall of sound" still gives me goosebumps when I hear chooons like that. Wonder if anyone's gonna be a trailblazer.... Jerry.
-
Serious note - don't think it will affect too many of our venues as they're either membership clubs or held in licensed premises where food isn't being sold (ho ho). Think I've got it right - but how can I do a DJ spot without a cigarette in one hand, soul 45 in the other, and a pint by my side? Jerry
-
In synch with the intro as well - sort of what us radio types call a "Doughnut" - don't ask! Well, Dayo might explain if you ask nicely Jerry
-
Well, it was"Soul Serenade", and he used to talk over bits of the intro, was it Mike Cotton Sounds version he used ? Jerry.
-
Rolling Stones I believe - by a very short head...Willie Mitchell's UK release was at the end of '65, US slightly earlier. Jerry.
-
Yeah but that's Steve wotsisname as well - just with the vocals sped up Jerry.

Can't remember if I was dj'ing that night as well, but I was definitely there...I did have that flyer until recently, goodness only knows where it is now. Ah, the old Plough hotel - bang in the middle of town, well known meeting place, over the years I've drunk there, dj'd there, stomped there, and... oh well, she was blonde...Paul O'B and I promoted a Thursday night local do there for a couple of years (when Ali was still at school), and one of my best memories is when Sue Ready (soon to join us on here with a bit of luck) and the South Wales crowd rang me and said "We're off to Bedford niter, we'll stop off for a drink on the way". Well, I couldn't go to a niter, especially one half way across the country, as I had to work a busy Saturday morning as a Foreign Exchange cashier...except that I was cajoled, bullied and then promised that they'd have me back at my desk in time...and they did, though how I balanced the books I'll never know! And the Plough? It's now a shopping arcade... Jerry.

Aaagh - wish you hadn't said that - now I can't get "Caught up" out of my mind! Jerry.
-
Ah but when I saw you dance I thought "What in the holy name is THAT about?" Jerry.
-
Totally irrelevant to the Northern side of it, but anyone who likes current urban gospel should get Raymond and co's "Playing games" album. I was first given a couple of tracks to play on air during the summer, and there's now a rather tasty vinyl promo in my collection Jerry

The moral has to be "if it looks too good to be true, it probably is"! A good mate read out a list from our Belgian friend, compiled from Gemm, and our verdict at the end was "do you really think that if a serious dealer had all those titles, in that condition, that no one on any soul site actually knew the dealer personally?". Smelt to high heaven... Mind you, another friend and dj/promoter from this neck of the woods has just fallen victim to this guy. WATCH OUT! Jerry.
-
...and I believe Clara Ward's version of "Help" got a few plays at the Torch as well. From even earlier, how about James Carr "Freedom Train" - or is that more social comment than gospel? Jerry.
-
Love the Pye release sheets Mick - on a radio anorak site somewhere there's an audio clip of the first day of Radio London (Big L) on 23 December 1964...playing "The 81"! Mind you, they also had the Outer Limits "Just one more chance" at no.6 in their Top 40 sometime in '67. Payola? Perish the thought! Jerry.
-
Bought this a while back from Ady Pountain, he's had a lot of Canadian stuff and I thought that this might be Canadian as well, but there's nothing on the label to confirm or deny it. Jerry.

Yes, it did happen, along with the Muppets theme , but only because it was a VERY silly night - I wouldn't have thought that anyone took it as a serious spin mate! Jerry.
-
Well, apart from Ian the rest of us have all dj'd together during this past year Mark - at Ady P and Dave G's joint birthday bash. Now there was agathering of the great and not-so-good! Jerry.
-
------------- What? You call crazy bluies shit-hot? Then again, on reflection... Jerry.

A few more memories of Yate... Ringleaders - Baby what has happened Star Treks - Gonna need magic Delites - Lover Sherry and the Inverts - I'm lost Sam Williams - Love slipped through my fingers Betty Turner - Be careful girl Memphians - South Memphis (another old Thorley c/up!) and of course, Ian Dury's rhythm stick (it was a pre-Christmas niter you had to be there...) Jerry (Hippo).
-
Usually I'd go for Thelma , but on Saturday night somebody played Junior's version nice and loud - talk about smokin' sax! Pity he could never sing, mind... Jerry.
-
What do you mean - Tony IS still innocent, isn't he Good to see I'm not the only one who still rates Yate on a good night as one of the best - sure,it wasn't as big as Wigan, but we always prided ourselves that there was never any of the bitchin' and backbitin' as there was between some jocks at other venues, it was almost a "collective" attitude. But you can't have a Yate revival without Clarky - the rest of us would be there like a shot, and we've all talked about it over the years. Mac (from Malvern) did a lot of local do's round Worcs, and did a fair few in Cheltenham with me. The last anyone heard, he came out (as if we didn't know, but it never seemed to bother any of us much!), moved to Derby, and I think got into the hi-energy scene. But no-one's heard a word on him since. Pity, as he was a good guy. On that point, Carol and Gerri should be added to the list as Mac was playing it uncovered while Sam stilled called it "Epitome of sound". Sure I'll think of more when I sign off... Jerry (Hippo).

-------------- Yup, I'd sussed that it was you Colin, and yes, we know each other - that great wacky world of radio huh? Both ended up with soul shows on the radio, can you imagine being allowed to do that on either Wyvern or Severn these days? I can't really sign my posts as Hippo, as there's already a usurper from the East Mids on here using that name and as he was here first and is probably bigger than me I'll just have to use my own name, those who know me, know me and the rest probably couldn't care less , But for a fuller version why not try to get to the Saracens Club in Cheltenham next Friday - the bar's open, Polo's been down the last few months, John Farrell and Rob Hurcombe are guesting at Christmas, and I might even buy you a pint Colin! Jerry.

I was working with Mike at the time it got reissued on Soul Supply, as I remember he'd spoken with Kev Roberts about its release and was proud of it! Not that he neede the royalties - he did well enough out of music for TV commercials for that! Jerry.
