  1. I know I dj'd at one of them with Ian etc. - a youth club wasn't it? Took my big box into work on the Friday morning, straight onto the train from Cheltenham to Egham via Reading, into the pub...as I remember, it was a very good night - back to Ian Stewarts and his girl Jasmin's place in Weybridge the next morning, then to his record stall at Woking. Several hours watching Saturday morning telly in someone's caravan (Steve Jeffries possibly?) then back down the M4 for Stroud all-dayer, and from there on to Yate. Wandered back home mid-morning Sunday, and I was probably out again on Sunday night. Frazzled? Moi? Hippo.
  2. Never knew that it got played at all Steve - remember buying it as a new release (on Deluxe) but I've never thought it a strong enough version. Flip's nice if you like deeper soul ballads though... Jerry.
  3. Have to disagree with my namesake here and now - I once described this in print as "charging, atmospheric soul" and 26-odd years later I haven't changed my mind...took me a long time to put it back in my playing-out box though! Jerry.
  4. Have you tried Adey Pearce at Cotswold Records? Jerry.
  5. ----------just like "Wanting You" then, taken from some musical or other - I have a vague memory of seeing it on TV on a Sunday afternoon after a niter - did not compute Jerry
  6. John "Kojak" Harvey started Yate, but pulled out at the beginning of '77, numbers were low by then but it was stil fun Dinks from Portsmouth took it over, revitalised it, got Clarkie, Tony Ellis etc. in,and that's when it got really good. Mac didn't work much, if at all, for Kojak but later DJ'd and supplied the equipment for Dinks's Southern Soul Club Yate niters. I thought JH died some years back?? When Herr Steve Smith recovers from his whistle-stop UK visit, I'm sure he'll supply some interrrresting anecdotes as he DJ'd for Kojak! Jerry.
  7. If I dug out my BCM test pressing and played it at the Sarries tomorrow night, would you stand as my bodyguard JOT Jerry
  8. No offence, I wasn't getting at you personally! Jerry.
  9. Agreed, some sound OK but Stereo was in its early days and the separation on some, including the Mirwood tracks, is pretty primitive - not a criticism, just the way it was then. Mind you, I'm the sort who always listens to "Sounds of the Sixties" on R2 in mono! Jerry.
  10. Mind if I opt out of this Mikey? As a Cheltonian, I follow the local convention -if you ain't actively engaged in making money out of the mass of punters that descend on Cheltenham this week, you stay well clear of town! Jerry.
  11. Ady, do you know if mono masters for "The Duck" and "Temptation Walk" exist? All the CD reissues I've heard are stereo takes, which just don't sound right...these were tunes meant to be heard on AM radio, after all! Jerry.
  12. Always associate this with St. Ives, then Yate when Thorley had a copy - but isn't this another example of what we were saying on another thread about every NS biggie automatically being labelled a "Wigan Monster"? Jerry.
  13. Red face time ...my mistake, it is "Sweetest Pain" on there, not "All night long". I'll just correct my database and then stick my head in a bucket of melted down vinyl... Oh well, it passed a few minutes, didn't it Jerry.
  14. No mate, they're two separate songs. Here's the relevant bit from my files... 15. Came out as "Club classics vol. 2" on CBS cat. no Vault 2 - one thing though, I've got the Dexter Wansel track listed as "All night long", not "Sweetest pain". Either I've cocked up on my database or there was a last minute change? Jerry.
  16. Wot?with hair like that?............no, just a girl from the right side of Manchester! Jerry.
  17. The genuine "first" copy was a white label 12" containing short and long versions (labels reversed) with the artist and title stamped on in red, catalogue number BIN 1, and the directive "Eat more cheese" scratched in the runout. Honest! It was sent out by the publishers, based at EMI in Manchester Square, with a personalised letter from Robert Blenman who worked there and was a top guy. That's the one with the best vocals as far as I'm concerned- and it was certainly big on the "urban" circuit in 1990. Well, it was for me, anyway! Jerry.
  18. Having been subjected to that audio clip on Five Live since 6am, it's wearing a little thin now...still, my ex will be happy this morning with that City win Jerry.
  19. The word "skint" describes it well Mikey - but I'll be there in spirit Jerry.
  20. Going to have to do some digging - I have a US test pressing of her "Mr. Big Stuff" on Motown with an uncredited soulful vocal on the flip - was it on the issue? Jerry. P.S. always used to like "Mama gave birth to the soul children" meself!
  21. [ .......and a gurt big handful of backstreet blueys Jerry. link
  22. So many choons and memories - here's a few more Gambrells - Jive talk George Kirby - What can I do Sam Williams - Love slipped Anthony and the Sophomores - Heatbreak Appreciations - I can't hide it Betty turner - Be careful girl B.J. thomas (David Huff c/u until Gilly passed me a copy!) Capitals - Can't deny that I love you (allegedly, but I can't remember that!) .......and a gurt big handful of backstreet blueys Jerry.
  23. Can't remember that Steve - I must have been at the bar - or dodging the fights! Jerry.
  24. Well, I liked the Stroud girls... but yes, Beverly Ann was a banker for gettin' em going at Yate! My first copy was a black issue off Rich Ballinger, the guy who put on the Stroud all-dayers, just as it was going big, and then I traded it and ended up with a white demo. Still got it, though it's a few years since I played it. Back on topic, the person behind those boots stuck a mike on the stage beneath the decks - if he'd got it nearer to the speaker it might have been a bit better, I recall at least one he did actually had Yate crowd chatter in the background. Not an expert... Jerry.
  25. Some revisionists would have you believe that Bobby Kline was a Casino sound anyway ...but it was going down well at Yate at the time when, as you say, it would have been too slow (or too classy?) for Wigan. Jerry.
