I know Charlie became a country star but he wwas pretty R&B in the 60s wasn't he. This guy wasn't really R&B at all - although there are connections to various sorts of black music in addition to his Northern soul tune...
-
Blimey - who's Larry Sprigg? Bob Brady's trombonist I guess? Not right but that's certainly using your noggin
-
A bit less R&B than Jerry Fuller
-
Well it wasn't Rick Astley the first time it was suggested soooooooooo... Fair bit older than Ricky boy to be honest.
-
By left field I meant records played at UK soul clubs that wouldn't have been considered soul records anywhere else. Or anywhen maybe? As a rock n roller, Charlie Gracie would fit into that category. Ain't him though... Charlie Gracie
-
I have no idea what that means but it sounds painful Actually, I can still walk fine so I suspect it hasn't happened yet
-
I get the feeling you're not all taking this completely seriously... Anyway - nope to all of those excellent suggestions. Obviously this is an old photo of him. I'll post a more recent one in a bit if we're not getting warmer.

Last week's went down ok and had the bizarre side effect of creating a bit of demand (well one person anyway) for Jackie Forrest's "Show Me How To Love" Here's another one. Personally I think it will be a bit easier once you get on the right track - but who knows? Staying with the tradition, this guy is connected with the rather 'left field' side of Northern Soul. The more people join in the better it is and there's no shame in having a guess, so please have a go Here's our mystery geezer
-
Exactly. An increase in available copies by stock turning up = a less rare record. I guess if someone lost a box load or dropped them, smashing them to bits the record could become more rare but otherwise it's a load of horlicks innit?
-
You gonna be doin' a bit of dressing up then?
-
Thought you might All set for tomorrow's picture quiz then?
-
I know what you mean Nev, but in my experience it's used against specific titles rather than a general comment about old vinyl. Personally I think a lot of folk use it when they mean "getting more expensive", which is more related to demand / exposure. Glad you can be so relaxed about it anyway - this is the sort of thing that drives me nuts!
-
I keep seeing references on here and on dealers sites to records that are "getting rarer" or that are "going to be rare one day", "Future Rarity" and so on. Clearly this is nonsense isn't it? I mean, the only way something could get rarer is if copies were destroyed or ceased to exist in some other way. I'm not referring to the sort of records that are locked up in collections and rarely emerge either - the phrase isn't usually applied in that way. what's it all about then? is it that some people don't understand the distinction between rarity and demand? Otherwise, does the language give a clue to how the mind of the person using it works: do they really think that these items get scarcer? Alternatively, does it just not matter and am I getting miffed at something that nobody else gives a toss about?

This thread reminds of the Great Disco Debate aka "Disco: why is it a dirty word" ages ago. Bearing in mind this is only from two years, here's what I posted during the row discussion: If anyone's interested in the whole thread you'll find it - I should warn you it gets a bit heated. A disco inferno?
-
Not very subtle, Ken. Bloody accurate though

1. Buy a Mac 2. command/Shift/4 3 there is no 3... actually there must be a shortcut for screenshots on your nasty PCs too...

Think I still got one in the cupboard of doom. Meanwhile I googled and I'm sure my old copy looked like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeWmVU9UaF8 Should have made it clear that I wasn't actually suggesting it was a tailor made. I just suspected so at the time. It's intrigued me so long though that I'd really like to know its origins.
-
Yeah that's what I meant Rod. All white ones weren't they? At the time that the rest of the label's (or is that lable?) output was black and red with silver print. Or very dark brown rather than black if we're to be ultra pedantic. It always felt like it was a release specifically for the Northern scene, which is ironic as I never remember it being played anywhere - you just ended up with it. strings and percussion sounded similar to that "soul fox' sound though don't you think? Not saying they were - maybe just a coincidence. Or my ears...

Just found this quote from Bill Buster: Basics: Eric Records was started inPhiladelphia, Pa.. in 1968 with the Paris Sisters record "I Love HowYou Love Me" (#101) pressed at Diskmakers. The label was/is part ofAmerican Record Sales, a wholesale distributor specializing in oldiessingles. We moved to New Jersey in 1974 and stayed there until 1996when vinyl was almost dead. My final location is San Leandro, CA andyes, I took all the vinyl with me, all 400,000 singles on all labels. My 4000 sq. foot warehouse here contains one of the largest remainingcollections of new and unplayed original 45rpm singles (1955-1996) onALL labels, including Eric. Need anything? Feel free to call ore-mail me with your want lists (I have no catalogs). This quote is from 2004 though so you can all stop wetting yourselves...

Same here...

All stamps show is the company that manufactured a record and some info like the year etc in some cases. Monarch was a legit organisation and lots of original records have a Monarch stamp. But so do loads of boots as a shedload of counterfeits were pressed up by Monarch in the 70s.
-
First Eric 45 I remember having was a Mitch Ryder one. I think it coupled Breakout and Devil with the Blue Dress. Then there was that 'Promised Land' by Cheyene. Sounded like Soussan making a Northern Soul Western movie theme. Naturally I like it

Thanks Pete, Yeah pink. In my 'Decca Days' I had several copies of Johnny Caswell, Lee Roye and so on but it took me ages to get a Danny White. Soul Bowl had the issues for about £1.25 at the time. As you suggest though, not the easiest record to shift. Clearly someone needs to revive it!
