RSD Black Friday is 29th November 2019. We've found that the whole RSD Black Friday is a bit "neither here nor there" in the shop to be honest. The matter is compounded by the fact that in the rest of the retail world BF is seen as sale time, whereas the RSD releases are often expensive imports. It's confusing for customers and this has been fed back to the industry by indie shops. On that basis, we order very few RSD BF releases - essentially just things that we think will definitely sell over time or those in which our customers have definitely expressed an interest. With the exception of the Dr John album, which could appeal to fans of funky, jazzy, psycheledic gear, here's not really much to interest soul collectors this year apart from the Motown Rare and Unreleased album as detailed below. We'll be stocking this for the shop. As per RSD rules, we can't take pre-orders, but unlike the regular RSD releases, we're allowed to list online the following day, so if anyone is interested, it could be worth dropping us an email on Sat 30th November to enquire if we have copies left: info@recordrevivals.co.uk Here's the link to the album: https://recordstoreday.com/SpecialRelease/1183 and here's the entire list in case anyone is interested - it's worth noting that there could be some late additions... https://recordstoreday.co.uk/media/1019146/black-friday-2019-uk-kb.pdf

I just picked up a spare copy of the promo EP for her We’ll Cry Together LP. It’s the only way to get Maxine’s version of See and Don’t See on 7 inch and comes in a groovy pic sleeve. I love Marie Queenie Lyons’ take of this song, but Maxine’s is a nice alternative, where she sounds defiant rather than devastated like MQL. It also has immense drums and a great driving brass arrangement. Top stuff!

I can only echo what others have said: The wait for the Wednesday lists, the frantic redials to try to get through, the “no that’s gone, aye you can have that Tooley “, the packages dropping through the letterbox, marvelling at Richard’s new sounds at Wigan on Saturday night, Dave Withers ringing him from the Arndale Market to ask if a particular artist was male or female, finding your old Soul Bowl lists 30 years later and wanting that tome machine right now! An influencer, a character and a top bloke. RIP John and condolences to those close to you .

Back in NY tomorrow after a few years absence. Any new spots turned up recently worth hitting for soul, jazz, R&B - or even cheap rock albums for the shop? Nola the next week but I know what I’m doing there Cheers amigos !

What’s a charity hard drive? Genuine question - although my guess is a load of unlicensed tracks. I’m not crusading here - just never heard that term before. However if it turns out to be someone selling stuff they don’t own on the basis that “it’s for charity” that would be hilarious. I really hope I’ve got the wrong end of the stick!

Numbering Ltd releases is a nightmare. Is it 500 limited to the UK, Europe or worldwide? You state 500 copies then it turns out that 70 copies are off centre or warped and get returned so you press another 70. You can’t turn the numbering system back so someone gets No 564 and accuses you of pressing extra copies. It’s never as straight forward as people imagine...

I was working in a record shop when the reissue came out. They were definitely done two years later once the record was in demand by the NS scene. The info pertaining to year of release on Discogs is incorrect. It should read: 53438 Baby Blue / Name It You Got It (black backing paper) 1974 56438 Baby Blue / Inst version (black backing paper) 1975 55438 Baby Blue / Name It You Got It (pink backing paper) 1976 1976 was the year that Decca changed the paper it used for labels. All of a sudden, the singles that they kept on catalogue as they remained steady sellers (Rolling Stones, Tom Jones, Zombies and so on) all started appearing with the pink backing paper. I don’t know why the matrix numbers aren’t consecutive but I’m 100% certain that’s the order that they arrived in the shop. As I implied earlier, it was a matter of some amusement with regard to the recording industry’s failure to understand the NS scene when they initially issued the wrong side with an instrumental flip...

We've done this on a number of occasions. JEP is just for demonstration purposes as I had it to hand in back in 2008. By the time of the reissues, the paper that Decca used for it's labels had a pink backing. The originals had black backing. If there's a trace of pink around the cut out centre or under the blue it's definitely a reissue - Paul Mooney explained that the paper is known in the trade as John Heyer "pink-back" paper. The 2nd issue gets sold as original all the time and it's almost like people don't care anymore, but the reissue was definitely done specifically for the Northern scene. Second attempt by Decca actually as they at first reissued the other side, the Alvin Stardust sounding Glam Rock stomper Baby Blue - complete with instrumental version on the flip as instros were "Big at Wigan"

Update from Universal rep re Marvin Gaye LP: This was a limited run but they have decided to “re-press” (due to some faulties) ….this will take around 5/6 weeks.
-
We still have the Ronnie McNeir 45 in stock. info@recordrevivals.co.uk Or come to sunny Scarborough for the bank hols!
-
Not at work at the moment but I thought it was due out in UK this Friday... My mistake. Released 29/03/19 but now OOS at Universal. I've asked the rep if they're expecting more stock and and will update on here accordingly.

Distro told us they’d sold out when I asked. Thanks for this

Hi all I've avoided doing frequent updates as don't want to bump but I need to do just this one so we're up to speed. We're down to the last 2-3 copies of Parliaments, Darrell Banks and Garfield Fleming and we have just x 1 copy each of the numbered box sets of Northern and Modern Soul 45s. However we have managed to secure a few extra copies of the superb Colemine Records Soul Slabs box set consisting of 3 Lps in red vinyl, compiling 27 singles from the label. There are currently 2 x copies on Discogs at £5O and £64. Ours are £45 plus shipping at cost. This was our favourite RSD release in the shop and the staff have been really hammering my copy! Might have to buy myself a spare at this rate Our stock of this release will be delivered Thursday so we can mail out Friday and Saturday. Any other orders can be mailed from Tuesday onwards as we're closed Mondays. You can PM on here but the easiest way to order is to email the shop as our staff can respond if I'm out valuing collections etc email: info@recordrevivals.co.uk Thanks to everyone who's ordered RSD 2019 stock from Record Revivals - it's a competitive world out here and we genuinely appreciate your business Cheers! Paul, Gill, Eleanor and Ruben at Record REvivals

A lot of record shops are run by rock blokes (and in more recent times rock women) Andy. Many of them don’t know anything about the soul releases other than Otis etc so they don’t order them. Consequently we don’t do bad for a relatively small shop
-
Hi Martin Can you drop an email to address below please. I'll put a copy aside before I leave at 2.30 today and will send shipping cost when back in the shop tomorrow Cheers Paul info@recordrevivals.co.uk

Darrell Banks Open The Door To Your Heart Instrumental

Our remaining stock will technically be available online from Saturday at normal RSD price. However with Easter, a record fair in town this weekend that we're doing and the VFM scooter run, there might not be that many. Given how busy we'll be we probably wont be able to list them on here until Monday... -
It's the place to be for sure! We were supposed be seeing Corduroy in York Sat but it's been pulled, which is a bummer. Joe Jackson Manchester Sunday though, so not all is lost

Interesting point. It’s frustrating to hear the media and the music industry claiming the CD is dead as a format. From our experience it’s to the contrary, as we have loads of customers with no inclination to go back to vinyl and no interest in streaming services. it’s the more niche stuff that sells for us on CD: notstalgia 50s/69s, jazz, folk and some classic rock. I guess the current/ indie buyers are the ones buying vinyl or streaming. Or both... I’m not sure if it’s been discussed on here already, but one of the biggest factors in the decline of CD sales has been the auto industry’s decision to stop fitting CD players in cars. It’ll be frustrating and saddening if the car makers are ultimately responsible for the end of CDs.
-
Cheers mate! Just said I was knackered yesterday and have offered apologies if I seemed a bit snappy. Equally we really appreciate the business that soul fans bring. Scooter run to Scarborough this Easter weekend and a Record Fair too, so I would imagine we’ll shift a fair amount of our remaining RSD stock.
-
Yeah, sorry I was a bit tired yesterday as we opened 10-3 when we’re usually closed Sundays. Apologies to all if I seemed defensive - I’m not usually that thin-skinned! We did a decent amount of trade with people who couldn’t make it on Saturday, but also spent loads of time answering phone calls, emails, social media messages to people asking have you got this release, can I pay over the phone. Most accept the RSD rules when you explain them fully. There’s always the odd one though, of course... On Saturday the atmosphere was amazing and the spirit and camaraderie of the folks in the queue was lovely to see. We only got 2 people who were unhappy: one bloke who had phoned at 8, then driven from Bridlington (30 mins) to find the last copy of his want had been sold in the interim. The other was a woman via Facebook who was unable to get to the shop but got increasingly angry that I couldn’t reserve her want, to the extent that I had to remind her it was just a bloody record, not a matter of life or death. Her parting shot was “Prince would not like this!” Hard to argue with that I guess, but I did make the point that he’d probably more miffed about being dead...

..and again... the shop doesn't set the price!! If it costs more than a normal album from the distributor, who base their price on what the label charges them, the shop has no choice but to pass that cost on. Can't believe I'm having to defend selling the Alice Clark Lp for £30 when people are saying that other places are charging £40! Finding this pretty disheartening to be honest. I thought that offering remaining stock on here at the regular RSD price rather than scalper ebay/discogs prices would be seen as a decent thing to do and maybe the soul record buying community would respect that from one of their own. Apparently not the case. I'll let the folks who messaged me know when stock is available after the embargo but won't bother posting a list on here. Thanks for your support guys...
