  1. Maybe - but I'd want to know if it had been polished and I would probably want to hear it next to an unpolished copy for comparison. If you grind down the surface of the 45 - which is in effect what you're doing, then you reduce the depth of the groove that the stylus sits in. Therefore the stylus collects less audio information from the record. That doesn't necessarily mean that the copy will sound rough - but it does mean there will a loss of fidelity, as Bob says.
  2. Got and thing going on and need to raise some cash sharpish. I may consider very close offers on these but will need more or less instant payment. I'd prefer paypal as a gift but if you're really interested in anything and that option doesn't work for you please contact me to discuss. Shipping UK: £2.00 recorded or £6.00 registered. International: £2.00 airmail or registered at cost depending on location. Your choice but please be aware of insurance limits. Having said that I pack well. PM questions or email: mistergodzilla@yahoo.com September Jones - I'm Coming Home / No More Love - Kapp promo NM £250 SOLD Beautiful copy of this definitive Detroit production from the Pied Piper stable. Clip includes a bit of the run-in so you can judge the quality of the playing surface even in dead wax. Four Voices - We Live In The Ghetto / Summer kind Of Love - Voice VG++ £50 SOLD Odd slight tick on "Summer..." side doesn't distract. Ghetto plays really nice. Another excellent double sider that's gained popularity in recent years. A banker for the future maybe? Dorothy Pay - Smooth Operator - Decca promo VG+ £40 now 35 SOLD Potential popcorn killer yet to make it's mark. The best version of this tune I've heard. Not sure how to price this so possibly a bargain for someone. A few paper scuffs but nice glossy vinyl. Spyder Turner - I Can't Make It Anymore - MGM promo VG+ £45 SOLD Tough promo of the Terra Shirma classic. A few marks - though nothing substantial and again mostly paper scuffs - force a lower grade. Willie Tee - Walking Up A One Way Street / Thank You John - Atlantic UK VG+ £25 now 20 Back to back essential Nola cuts. Nice on UK issue as played in the early days of British soul clubs. Some slight scuffing but still a great looking and playing copy. Elvin Spencer - Lift This Hurt - E.S Cozy Ex £25 now 20 SOLD If the expensive original is a bit out of reach, what better way of attaining this superb soul 45 than on the artist's own label? A long out of print limited repress from the 1980s. As always I've tried to grade strictly and I hope that these are fair prices. Please feel free to contact me for more info and I'm always happy to provide more detailed descriptions, additional scans and higher bitrate clips if required. Scans and MP3 clips below. Thanks for looking. September Jones .mp3 Four voices.mp3 Dorothy Pay.mp3 Spyder Turner.mp3 Willie Tee.mp3 Elvin Spencer.mp3 Solds removed. Remainder reduced.
  3. Hope you sell all your records at the same price you bought em for mate. Glass houses and all that y'know?
  4. Crikey! Not thought about this bloke for 30 years yet I recognised him immediately. Never heard him say a word!
  5. I've been advised by Carter Ruck to make it clear that I am not related to any other monsters on this site. I thank you Godz
  6. You see them about for between five and ten quid.
  7. Not seen anything I'd want to nick yet... .. . Just kidding
  8. Just spotted something that reminded me of this thread. Wonder if Gamma put out any 45s that weren't called S.O.S. ? Out of interest there's confirmation that it's of French origin as suggested by a couple of people. The writers were the Paris based production team Michaele, Lana and Paul Sebastian. Link to Discogs
  9. To be honest it was more of a general query - although I was wondering about the dates of the cream coloured Starday/King 45s with the drawing of a 'King" character on the right. Typically (for this site) however, I ended up learning some stuff that I didn't expect to, so thanks indeed chaps
  10. ok found what I need. KING
  11. Can anyone point me at some info regarding King Records 45s please? ie the periods that the various different label designs were used? Thanks
  12. Not sure about a house band but think I remember Smoke being described on another forum as a record run by George Blackwell and his wife as a kind of "pay to get your record released' outfit. There's also a Sammy Campbell connection - maybe he worked for them but nothing got released. Might be thinking about Greg Tormo's site when it sort of ruled the web, rare soul wise. - he's on here now. Did he say that Blackwell stifled Job Opening?
  13. Ahh Shudehill. Some years later a great source of Cadet 45s. I used to buy copies of Terry Callier, 'Look At Me Now' for about 25/30p a go (few years later and prices had gone up!) and flog them for a fiver or so at Wigan.
  14. I think that was the show that caused a stir. She's obviously trying to look quite different from how she appeared in Pickettywitch I think you're right about Phylis on reflection. Just a coincidence that they both used that name maybe?
  15. Well I remember seeing Sweet Dreams somewhere and there was definitely a black looking singer and my dad said "that's Polly Brown" Can't remember if it was TV or in a mag though.
  16. Yep. Another one of those 'cod Motown' things that some people seem to like. Think I prefer Pickettywitch to be honest.
  17. Charity Brown and Phylis Brown are definitely the same white woman. Her p;ic was on the back of the RAIN album. I also used to request Phylis Brown' s "Oh Baby" at Wigan and I think we knew at that time they were one and the same. Pete, you're not thinking of Polly Brown are you? Out of Pickettywitch and then Sweet Dreams. When she formed part of the Sweet Dreams duo we weren't supposed to know who she was and she made her self up like a black woman in press shots and, on at least one infamous occasion, on Top of the Pops in 1974 singing Honey Honey. My dad sussed her straight away I recall
  18. We were there that for that too. There was a rather dodgy stench that was like cheesy feet and Mrs G was certain it was coming from the cracks between the boards on the dancefloor. The whole place looked shabbier than ever too, although again, Mrs G says it was like that when we went to the Rarest of the Rare and Detroit/Chicago allnighters. In my memory it was really glamorous in the 70s. Probably something in the beer... Despite all of the above we had a great time at Sharon Jones and I still love the old place. Gonna have to try to get to this
  19. Me neither if I didn't already know. I just expect everyone to be sharper than me
  20. Too hard for ya?
  21. Nope cheeky. 60s Tamla Motown LP
  22. Hey - five bonus points if you can ID the album behind the acetate LP
  23. plus the "Bad Sounds" comment dates it to before I was wearing long pants
