  1. Need Cal Tjader Solar Heat Skye 45 please. I know there are a couple on eBay but I want one in nice condition and need it by next weekend. Anybody able to help please? Ta
  2. The first 45 on Swan was by Dickie Do and the Don'ts and I'm fairly sure their biggest artists will have been The Beatles, Freddie Cannon, Link Wray and maybe Edie Rambeau. Sure it released a fair amount of R&B but I think it's stretching it call it a soul label. More to the point though, I accept that people do the "should I dance to this as I don't know whether it's a boot or original" thing, but surely people don't ask themselves if it's ok to dance to records dependent on the actual label?
  3. That John Bull Breed 45 may be a cover of soul tune but it's not Blue Eyed Soul - more Freakbeat if you had to hang a label on it, I guess. Bloody great record though - wish I still had mine!
  4. I've seen threads on other sites where similar discussions have taken place. My perception is that she identified herself as a back artist (and a black servicewoman come to that) and that's been good enough for me. I'm out of this part of the thread before it gets into an area I'm not comfortable with.
  5. These people disagree Beautiful also are the Souls of my Black Sisters LINK I think you're just confused by her pink tights...
  6. Harrisburg was 'proud' of heights reached by Anita Humes Chappelle, former lead singer of The Essex In 1963, Anita Humes Chappelle, a young black woman from Harrisburg, entered a New York recording studio with her three bandmates and recorded a catchy bubble-gum tune. It took The Essex all of 20 minutes. Within a matter of weeks, "Easier Said than Done" had climbed to the top of the pop and soul charts. Anita Humes Chappelle, a 1958 Bishop McDevitt High School graduate, and her three black male backups had managed an uneasy feat: At a time when music genres were polarized by race, America embraced The Essex. What music fans did not know was that the rhythm-and-blues vocal group was all black. Their first album hit record shops with no cover art. The music spoke for itself. Chappelle led The Essex to sell 1 million copies of "Easier Said than Done," earning a gold record, followed by two other hits. LINK to article
  7. I think Anita Humes needs to be added to the list of artists who will be quite surprised to discover that they are white...
  8. The residue might also make it temporarily sound better in the way a "wet play" does but it's a slippery slope (if you'll forgive the phrase) and in the long term will probably lead to a deterioration in sound forcing you to always play wet. Bad for the old stylus, all the gunk too, I'd have though.
  9. SOLD thanks. Anthony & Imperials - It's Not The Same - Veep promo Mint minus copy with clean labels. Looks unplayed actually. £50 + £2.00 Recorded UK / £2.00 airmail overseas. Insured airmail quote available on request. PM please or email: mistergodzilla@yahoo.com Thanks
  10. You may struggle with a US original of Melba Moore. Thinking of Bobby Fuller Four maybe?
  11. ...at 18, feeling uncomfortable with R&B, he turned towards rap and hip hop music... ...Plan B stated that he may do a reggae album in the future, but it was also entirely possible he would do a dubstep album. Earlier on in the very same interview, he confirmed he has not quit hip-hop music, as the Strickland Banks soul album is just a one-off, and that there will be a couple more hip hop albums in the near future. "Just straight forward Plan B hip hop that you're used to, we have a couple of them coming out before I decide to do that" said Drew...
  12. Putting these on eBay so sales now closed thanks. Shipping for up to 2 x 45s: £1.00 1st Class / £1.80 Recorded Delivery in the UK. £2.00 overseas + insurance if required. Combined shipping available if you buy more than one record PAYPAL preferred but cheques ok by arrangement. All prices are GB Pounds. More scans, B-Sides etc / longer clips available. Questions etc are as always welcome by PM or email to: mistergodzilla@yahoo.com Grading VG/VG+/EX/NM I've tried to grade strictly and a VG+ record will play really well but might have some surface marks. NM is as good as it gets and even unplayed old store stock gets this grade. I've noted any particular defects and will accept returns on any items where the buyer is not completely satisfied. The Performers - I Can't Stop You / LA Stomp - Action UK 35 SOLD Big demand on this one right now - especially nice and collectible on a UK Action press. EX (closer to NM except for a bit of wear round spindle hole) Seen at over twice the twice on this site! Ron Moody & The Centaurs - The New Breed - Columbia promo 20 Now 12 Old school Northern Soul stomper from this Richmond VA outfit who are still performing to this day! The New Breed is a cover of the Jimmy Holiday song that got brief spins at Wigan. Should have been the forgotten Casino spins thread maybe! Condition is NM The Partnership - Not For Love Nor Money / Baby, If I had You - MGM 25 Now 20 Two soulful dancers on one 45 that's been getting name-checked in playlists for the last year or so. Again, considerably more expensive on many dealer lists. NM Alton and Johnny - Hang On In There Baby - Polydor UK 15 SOLD Excellent version of the classic where Johnny Bristol sounds better than ever and is enhanced by the presence of femme vocals by Alton Mclean. Spins in Crossover rooms and some demand from Japanese "free soul" collectors. Inst on the flip and HB Barnum at the controls. £25/30 from the big guys. EX condition Gizella Smith + Mighty Mocambos - The Time Is Right For Love / Pt 2 - Soul Seed 8 Now 6 An interesting, uptempo take one the Bobby Reed song from a couple of years ago. Flip is an instrumental re-working with some funky flute. NM Peaches Daniel - Day In Court - United Artists 25 Now 20 One that has been slipping under the radar as it's not sufficiently well known. The odd one goes cheaply on eBay as a consequence but it's on the wants lists of some clued up folk. First class sister funk arranged by Monk Higgins. Peaches is actually Alex Brown. Grades only VG as it looks pretty worn but check the clip to see how nicely it plays! The Second Thought - Slingshot - Brite Leaf 25 Now 20 Funky Organ mover that's also desired by Psych collectors. Dig the keyboards? Well check those credits - Billy Arnell alert! VG as there's one big scratch but it plays good and loud as per clip. The Dave Pell Singers - Oh, Calcutta - Liberty promo 30 Now 25 As included on the splendid 1996 library music comp "The Sound Gallery" and sampled by Quantic on 69 Police. Tough album but in my experience an even tougher 45. NM The Razor's Edge - Gotta Find Her - Kingston 30 Now 25 If you don't know this - listen to the clip. One of my all time fave garage tunes that has some northern appeal too. The same tune was later released nationally by Pat Farrell and the Believers on Diamond, but this is the rarer, original local press. My spare copy - the other one's a keeper. VG+ with some vinyl and label wear - plays great. The Satisfied Minds - i Can't Take It - Plato 45 Now 40 Raw fuzzy garage from Plato records - home to the Kickin' Mustangs and the Outcasts. Not an ounce of soul in this one - just pure energy. Comes in a nice Plato sleeve that has some blackening, especially on the plain back, but which looks really cool nevertheless. Vinyl is NM Alton and Johnny.mp3 Performers.mp3 Ron Moody Centaurs.mp3 Partnership - Love nor Money.mp3 Gizella Smith.mp3 Peaches Daniel.mp3 Second Thought.mp3 Dave Pell Singers.mp3 Razor's Edge.mp3 Satisfied Minds.mp3 Click for some of my previous sales. I'll take reasonable offers on these. Don't forget to email or Pm any queries. Thanks for looking.
  13. Each to their own of course, but I don't think he'll be giving Sharon Jones or our own Alice Russell a run for their money.
  14. Saw him at Glasto. Pretty disappointing to be honest. I expected something a bit tougher and bit less show-biz but apart from a pretty bizarre cover of the Velvet Underground's Femme Fatale it was all a bit boring. We went to the organic wine tent and then hit the made fiddle bands in the Green Fields for a bit.
  15. I pointed it out in Jokey way before everything kicked off. For the record though, I have no axe to grind with Gene, or with Jock for that matter and I'm psychically forwarding a couple of imaginary pints for them to sit down with, have a chat and get over it.
  16. I think some people get them mixed up with the UK band who recorded on MCA. Their 'Remember' is a re-write of "Un Rayo de Sol" by Hawkes and Blakely of The Tremeloes.
  17. How did Dean take the news that he's turned white? Maybe a bit of a 'Watermellon Man' moment...?
  18. Translation courtesy of the pat. pending Godzilla International Double-Speak Decipherer: "I would like to have lots of records that I once owned when they were cheaper. I would like to buy them all again but am not prepared to pay current prices. Therefore you should all stop buying these records so that the price drops and I am able to buy them again. Please sell me cheap records. Thank you".
  19. Definitely Detroit. The flip "Precious Memories" is by "Rockin' Robbie D" - credited as plain old "Robbie D' on the label. I remember reading on the Soulful Detroit forum that Precious Memories was recorded at Golden World studios. Robbie D was apparently the only only white DJ on Detroit's WCHB station and people liked to copy his patter which went "Hey! Baby! This is me! Rockin' Robbie D! I'm so bad I make flowers die I make babies cry I take candy from babies and give dogs rabies and if that ain't bad the rain don't fall and that ain't all "biscuits ain't bread." Here's Robbie
  20. While you're doing your digging, Tim, dig out a geography book and you'll see that there are a few other countries in addition to the UK and the USA Seriously though, there at least Dutch and German issues with pic sleeves. I think that there may be two different German ones in fact - one with same design as Dutch sleeve but in a different colour and one with a different one
  21. I heard it yesterday evening and as soon as the piece began, that feeling just slammed into me again. Not felt like this since we lost Curtis Mayfield.
  22. Debbie Reynolds was in the The Rat Race. Theme tune by Sam Butera was also recorded by Elmer Bernstein, Richard Maltby and of course the Righteous Brothers Band Any prrize for first Northern Soul connection Dave?
