  1. The old Rose Batiste cover up? That intro used to make my hair stand on end I loved it so much...
  2. You've just listed some of the things that make it an ace record. Odd choice to play at soul venues, granted, but whenever I stick it on a comp for my non-soul pals they love it!
  3. Please don't make me look through my thousands of records - I can't make up my mind as to whether this is the biggest-headed post I've ever seen or the laziest
  4. Bottle Rocket by The Go Team samples the "2-4-6-8-10 - 2-4-6-8-20" bit from Soul Time by Shirley Ellis. Bloody great band too. They're always a bit shambolic live but you end up jumping around and grinning like an idiot
  5. Great story but is there any evidence of this Ian? I agree it sounds that way, but it's also clearly a 'dance fad' tune too. All those SWIM records weren't made to advertise the local baths after all
  6. According to the Youtube clip Circles is the backing track to this
  7. Hi Andy - no thunder to steal. I just thought it was a bit confusing and didn't want my post about JW to look as though it was linked with the suggestion that he was a bit of a chancer. Cheers.
  8. That original quote about John (uncredited by Andy) is mine. John was older than me as I was just a nipper but we used to go Wigan in the same crowd, and to other local nights. I may be doing him a disservice by spelling his name not quite right but I'm sure Wojowski is pretty close. He had very red hair and at a guess, he'd be about 60 now. The ebay seller is johnmickolajckyz, and apart from the 'John' bit, surely it's only similar in the way that Smith and Jones both look like British names. I remember that that John's record collection was the stuff of local myth. He was supposed to have 45s from his pre-Wigan days that were the stuff of legend and largely unknown to most collectors. Although I saw his box round at his house in Oldham once (I recall it was big wooden thing he kept under the bed) he would never, ever let me or my pals look through it. Maybe he just thought we were young scallies and not to be trusted; maybe he thought that having grown up with the likes of My Heart's Symphony and the Soussan instrumentals, his good stuff would have been wasted on us. Guess I'll never know. He was a good guy though, so I hope he's ok. edit - actually I think I just found him!
  9. I just listened and googled really - I'm hardly Sherlock Holmes!
  10. Is this it Greg?
  11. Just want to echo what others have said. The Band On The Wall gig was tremendous. It really was like going back in time to see a classic soul singer at his peak - not a hint of cheese or 'knowing retro', just great songs delivered beautifully by a fine singer with a great band. Doesn't get much better really. As others have also said, the funky and uptempo stuff was great but Lee Fields really excels with the ballads. Honey Dove made my hair stand up. I also got to meet Little Stevie and Brett off here which was really nice and the following morning found some great stuff at Beatin' Rhythm and chatted about to Derek Howe about how nice Scarborough is. If Carling made bank holidays...
  12. Please note: I'm away from home from 1.30 pm Thursday when I leave to go and see Lee Fields in Manchester (Yay!) I'll respond to messages when I get back around 5pm on Friday. Thanks. Very fair prices on these I believe. Check MP3s and Scans and please read grading info for these 45s. Shipping is £1.00 1st Class or £1.80 Recorded Delivery for up to 2 x 45s Worldwide £2.50 overseas + insurance if required. Combined shipping available if you buy more than one record PAYPAL only please. All prices are GB pounds. Anyone who has bought from me before will know that I grade strictly - more info below. I'm happy to provide further MP3 clips, more scans. Questions etc are as always welcome by PM or email to: mistergodzilla@yahoo.com Mandrill - Too Late - Arista - VG++ 30 SOLD Classic 70s track. The label is glossy and scanner picks up imperfections. In real life the labels look nice and clean. Vinyl: I can see a couple of very light marks and one long scratch mark that is on the surface and doesn't affect play. Full gloss otherwise. Check unadulterated clip. Mandrill.mp3 Ann Cole - Each Day - Baton - VG- 35 SOLD Cracking R&B sound with a fair bit of demand. Looks well worn but plays really nice so offered at a good price. Check unadulterated clip. Ann Cole Each Day.mp3 R Tenard - You Made Me Cry / Don't Stop - Fa Bo Lus - VG 25 AKA Robert Tenard. Hard Sou/R&B double sider that I think was covered up at Stafford Some surface scuffing to vinyl and pen on label but still a great play copy. Check unadulterated clip s of both sides. R Tennard A.mp3 R Tennard B.mp3 I'm now using the grading system recommended by this site as below. This means that a VG+ record will look and sound nice and won't be a piece of trashed vinyl with a coating of wishful thinking! I've also added scans and clips to give an even more accurate idea. M- As good as it gets, practically an untouched record that plays as if it were brand new store stock VG++The odd barely discernible surface mark or minor blemish, nothing that will affect play in any way. VG+ A few more marks or light scuffs than a VG++ record but still sounds fine for listening and/or DJing. No scratches.Light surface wear. A used but far from abused copy. VG Scuffs and light scratches throughout, most can't be felt. Expect some surface wear throughout the record with light surface noise and possibly a few pops in places. Should still serve as a suitable player copy for listening & DJing. VG- The record may have some scratches that will be deep enough to feel. Audible clicks and pops are likely consistent throughout the grooves.Expect noticeable noise throughout, NO SKIPS though.
  13. Anyone else on here off the the Band On The Wall show in sunny Manchester tomorrow?
  14. I think the price has dropped within recent years to around £25/30 although it still fetches a bit more on occasion. From my experience it certainly higher than that around six/seven years ago when I sold some copies, mainly to funk collectors. Then Juno got some copies, maybe three or four years ago. They looked the same on the site so I assumed were a repress, but can't be sure as I never saw one in the flesh. Either way the increased availability might have affect the price.
  15. I guess the quality of the cassette tapes is an issue too. Mrs G has some reel to reel tapes that her dad made by hooking up his record player to the recorder in the late 50s/early 60s, when they lived in Singapore. Even after all these years, the quality is better than some of compact cassettes new releases I used to buy in the 70s/80s.
  16. Sometimes you have to look outside of Manship's ' Think' was a US pop hit and got in the top 10 in the R&B charts.
  17. That's right - Justin Hayward writers credit and Threshold Publishing. Now sold thanks.
  18. I think there was a thread a while ago when there was some discussion about this record and a few people said that, Pete. It definitely got a few spins at Wigan (Sam I think) but was one of the ones that disappeared fast and was a bit of cult tune amongst some of my old gang. I'd never heard of Dry Well until the 90s when my mate Nick Ward bought one. By then it was that long since I'd heard it that I couldn't be 1005 sure it was the same recording, but it is. I think it's probably a variation of one of the garage bands called Shandels/Shandells/Shan-Dells etc but no idea which. I've read that the label is not the Detroit one and the numbering is different, but there is a Michigan Shandells. Don't think it's them but going by the pic I wish it was!
  19. Ellen & The Shandels - Gypsy - La Salle - NOW SOLD THANKS Later issued as Gypsy by Dry Well on Lauren this is the first, considerably rarer issue. Psychedelic soul for the dancefloor. Record is a strong VG+ with some light surface marks and a bit of static here and there but nice gloss. There is a small edge warp that doesn't affect play. I'm trying to grade as accurately as I can so I've now added a lengthy unadulterated MP3 clip. Feel free to ask questions. No idea what to ask for this so I'll open it up to offers by PM or email to: mistergodzilla@yahoo.com Thanks Paul Gypsy.mp3 I'm informed that John Manship's book price for this 45 is £350. Therefore I'll consider offers over £150
  20. Nah - sorry to get you going Just two slightly different variations of the orange and yellow one.
  21. what about the other orange one? Probably not I'm guessing...
  22. I know. See above. Crikey everyone's lecturing me about well known boots now
  23. At the risk of getting back on topic... That's what you get for posting quickly at lunchtime. I wasn't suggesting that there were no 60s bootlegs. I'm also aware that there are ITZY releases that were bootlegged for the Pittsburgh area market - as opposed to the later ones on the label that may have been aimed more at the UK scene. What I was trying to say is that I recall a debate about the ITZY label and I'm sure that as well as the boots, it was said that there were some legitimate releases. If that's definitely not the case I'm happy to be corrected. ps - if anyone has a go at my pal's most excellent glue and lighter fuel retailing website I'll be in with fists like flash...
  24. I thought there was some debate about whether the ITZY press was a local Pittsburgh issue as opposed to an out-and-out boot? It's from the 60s in either case and I'm sure I've seen far more copies of the swan press than the ITZY one? 60s Swan press I mean, not the reissue in the link. Not saying the ITZY one is worth that much though, wouldn't know to be honest.
  25. Me and Mrs G got our tickets for Manchester as soon as it was announced. I'm on the Band on the Wall mailing list and literally felt my heart start to race when I opened the email. One of my all time favourite venues too. Winner!
