Original poster says it's not that one - although the catalog number, title and track listings appear to be the same. Not sure what the difference is. It came in a pic sleeve though...

Astounding work Mike - looks like SS does have it's Bahamian music expert after all! Cheers

That's a start. Thanks Bob.

No ideas then guys? I'm guessing it's just the wrong sort of sound for this forum then, despite the generally more open approach to non-NS sounds compared with a few years ago. Have to say that it's times like these however, when - despite my genuine respect for this board - I miss the old funk forum. I'm certain that someone on there would have turned out to be an expert on Bahamian recordings. Clip added just in case anyone is interested in this sort of thing. message 1.mp3

What's dead here is your argument. People listen to music essentially for enjoyment. By your logic no-one should hang-glide, row a boat or ride a horse for pleasure as there are much more efficient modes or transport. Actually I think you're just being deliberately provocative. In which case carry on...

I recently came across this 45 from the Bahamas: Sun, Sand and Sea / Part 2 by The Message on Dyn-O-Mite. It's a nice funk track with organ and wah-wah guitar. The instrumental flip is to my mind reminiscent of Beginning of The End's recordings. Zero results on google, discogs, popsike etc. Anyone got, heard of or know anything about this record? Thanks.

Isn't it this one? GRI = Guerrilla Reissue (aka bootleg I would imagine). https://www.discogs.com/Various-Guerrilla-Reissue-V2/release/609080

There's a 'clandestine' showing of the film with special guest Spooner Oldham in New Orleans on October 3rd. A few hours later the Hip Drop VI allnighter kick starts the Ponderosa Stomp festival. Just saying like https://www.ponderosastomp.com/

And I've seen beautifully packaged reissues on vinyl - 45s, EP, LPs, box sets and so on that have been remastered and pressed on better quality vinyl than when they first issued. They often have a wealth of information including details of musicians, artists, producers, studios et al. They are aimed at people who prefer vinyl as a format. What's wrong with that?

There are loads of other labels that "play by the rule" - BGP, Numero, Soul-Jazz, Stones throw, Jazzman, Luv n Haight to name a few.

Two Versions Of Soul Incorporated "what Goes Up" / Boo Label?
Godzilla replied to boba's topic in Look At Your Box
Unlimited to be precise, it seems. -
I've picked up a copy of the rare 1975 Studio B LP featuring various Boston artists that includes The Gang Band's "The Sound Of Boston (TSOB)." This tune was covered up as Night Time Shadows by The Theodore Life Orchestra and played by Richard Searling and Soul Sam at various venues in the 70s including Wigan Casino and Cleethorpes Pier. The 45 is super rare (yeah, we all know about the one that slipped through the net in January this year, but that was a fluke...) and the album from which it was originally played is not easy to come by. The sleeve is VG+ I guess with some light wear, a tape mark and small sticker on the rear but the vinyl looks virtually unplayed so conservatively graded EX. Clip is from the actual record and is unadulterated. I've really no idea what to ask for this LP and I don't think it's been sold on here before so I'll accept offers until midnight Saturday UK time. Minimum bid £40.00 Please PM or email: mistergodzilla(at)yahoo(dot)com Thanks Paul TSOB.mp3

My impression is that they're a pretty professional set up John, which is why I was all the more baffled by the lack of response.

https://www.systemrecords.co.uk/ Paid via paypal over three weeks ago. No record, no response to two emails. Paypal dispute opened and no response to that so far so i expect a full refund. Caveat emptor Over and out.

The photos on Discogs are there to represent the release though Mark, not individual copies for sale. Members can edit the entries and frequently do - maybe you could update the entry with a better photo?

Well it's changed now. Get over it grandad

Otis Redding's version is surely a cover. Jimmy Cliff's too, although admittedly not a soul cut.

Some info here that suggests he's one and the same: Challenge Records released "Train To Nowhere" as a single on January 15, 1958, with "Tequila" on the B-side. Because Flores was under contract with RPM, credit was given to "Chuck Rio," which became his permanent adopted stage name. The new group was called "The Champs," although there clearly was no cohesive group per se. Burgess did record three new songs for "The Champs" on January 20, but any vocal direction was quickly scuttled by the immediate mania surrounding "Tequila." The instrumental B-side not only charted quickly, it shot up the charts in short order, and hit number one on March 28, 1958. A rival version by Eddie Platt also charted and peaked at no. 20. A touring group was quickly assembled to capitalize on the success of "Tequila," consisting of Chuck Rio on sax, Dave Burgess on rhythm guitar, Dale Norris on lead (Buddy Bruce declined), Joe Burnas on bass, and Gene Alden on drums. Another recording session took place on April 5, and Challenge had enough material to release the first Champs lp, "Go Champs Go." However, the subsequent stage shows were a disaster, and Rio and Burgess feuded. Rio and Alden quit the tour in June, and a frantic search for replacements began. (Chuck Rio returned to L.A., and began "Chuck Rio and the Originals" for Challenge Records; he later was associated with the Persuaders). Dave Burgess called Danny Wolfe, who in turned called Slim Willet in Abilene. Slim was a country singer, influential in Abilene and Dallas radio scene. He also was active in the popular "Big D" Jamborees of the 1950's there and operated the Winston record label out of his garage. Willet recorded local Texas musicians in various combinations, including a young Jimmy Seals on tenor sax and a young Dash Crofts on drums. The two were primarily playing with pianist Dean Beard as "Dean Beard and the Four Pals" and "Dean Beard and the Crew Cats." Seals sax was remarkably similar in tone in Rio's. https://www.sealsandcrofts.com/champs.html and from the same Seals and Croft site: In 1964-65, as The Champs were winding down, Jimmy Seals released four 45 rpm records under the Challenge label. It was the first time he had been featured as a singer-songwriter. None of the singles charted: Wish For You, Want For You, Wait For You/Runaway Heart (9153) Lady Heartbreak/Grounded (9200) Everybody's Doing the Jerk/Wahoo She's Not a Bad Girl/The Yesterday of Our Love https://www.sealsandcrofts.com/jimmyseals.html

Elsewhere the seller has stated: I was told this was a 2nd pressing from the 1970's - and thus considered it a vintage pressing from 40 years ago - and an original of this version of the pressing - certainly not a contemporary reissue...I apologize for the confusion. My italics.

Greg Belson @ Nyc Downlow, Glastonbury 2013 - Gospel Disco Set
Godzilla replied to Greg Belson's topic in All About the SOUL
Absolutely cracking Greg - spot on for that area. In typical festival style we were at Block 9 a couple of hours before you were on but ended up stuck in Shangri La when you played after having lost track of time. That's a frequent late night occurrence for us in that part of the festival, I'm afraid. Shame but I guess we were having a top time what ever we were doing... Same again next year, maybe? -
So I dropped my copy of Karate by the Emperor's ages ago and decided to hold out until I get a nice UK Pama copy (purely for aesthetic reasons). Then I get asked to DJ at a mate's party on Saturday and today he says "remember that tape you gave me 20 odd years ago with a song called Karate on it? You gotta play that..." Therefore dirt cheap Mala copy needed that can be mailed 1st class recorded tomorrow morning. Can anyone oblige please? Cheers Paul (Godz)
