Sorry - thought you were a record collector
-
So you'd call the first UK issue of My Bonnie by the Beatles on Polydor 'a specially made pressing' rather than legal first issue in UK? Fair enough - I'm out of here.
-
It's nowhere near as straightforward as that. When bands/artists become popular previously unreleased singles and albums get released by labels that they were originally signed to. They are "intended for general release to the record buying public" but not "made around the time of the recording" (both quotes are your terms of reference). Furthermore, records used to stay on catalogue for years, sometimes with obvious changes to the label, sometimes without. The whole point about ypou needing knowledge and experience in the world of record (and other forms of) collecting is that you can't boil it down to a few basic statements. Finally : Bootleg - a record made specially for the northern scene without the owners permission - where do all the Beatles, Bowie, Dylan, Joy Division etc, etc etc bootlegs fit into this definition..?
-
...and then there's Darnell Simpkins and the Family Tree on SCM and Bobby Newton's "Do The Whip" on Mercury - complete with pic sleeve showing you how to do it!
-
You'd be better off with the pork - it comes with crackling. Boom-tish!

Fair enough. It doesn't mean that a lot of this thread is pure fantasy though. I understand why people want to believe - it's because records are close to us, they're significant. In the real world however, anyone who wanted to make money by faking things would of course stick to objects with mass appeal, that they could forge easily and sell for guaranteed decent profit, rather than chance their arm in the highly volatile and relatively low interest record market. Armani handbags from Turkey anyone?

Don't you come in here spoiling this thread with your actual facts and experience. You'll only ruin it for all the proper experts...
-
You've knocked it, there's a bit of crap in the groove, worn stylus, alien substitution. Could be a lot of things really....
-
No guilt for me. It's frequently cited by embarrassed Northern Soul fans as shite piece of music, when clearly it's a brilliant theme tune, albeit not remotely related to soul music. Mort Stevens also did the Police Woman theme. Another bit of required watching in our home in the mid 70s

Let me try to explain again. The US ABC version came out on HMV in the UK. A faster version with (applause - might be live, might be dubbed) subsequently came out on UK Stateside. Jazzman issued a 45 with the ABC/HMV version on one side and the Stateside version on the flip. Which is pretty much what I said in my first post. There's no such word as 'prodominent' either while we're at it.

So how come there's been nothing in the news about the price of crack plummeting in some parts of the country - which is clearly the case, judging by some of the posts on this thread...
-
If you want the ABC version on a UK label it's HMV you're after. The Stateside release is the version on the flip of the Jazzman 45

US Cadet and UK Chess 45 with the superb jazz dancer "Do what You Wanna" on the flip. Never out of my play box.

I have a VG+ copy some surface marks, plays fine. I'd want £50 (GBP) inclusive of shipping to US. Hit me up if interested. Thanks

Nina Simone - Sea Lion Woman - Phillips VG++ AKA See Line Woman (the title under which it was subsequently reissued). One of Nina's best: an astonishing, funky, drums and flute led number. £25 Della Reese - It Was A Very Good Year - ABC VG+ Killer mod/Jazz R&B dancer. Some surface scuffs but plays great. Clip available on request £28 SOLD BW Souls - Marvin's Groove - Round - Ex Funk/R&B classic. Nick on label edge - vinyl looks unplayed £15 Postage £2.30 1st class signed for mail. 50p each additional 45. Overseas at cost - just ask. I don't profit on shipping. Paypal only thanks. Friends and family payments preferred but not a deal breaker. Clips for reference only - feel free to ask for soundclips from actual 45s.
-
Thanks for the posts - especially to those who took the time to write a line or two about why particular 45s do the business for them - and to those who chose to include less mainstream choices. However, I didn't really want the thread to be about people just posting links to well known funk 45 without comment (in fairness, maybe I misjudged how progressive/varied people have become in their tastes). Cheers everyone but it feels like time to lock the thread

Pleasant enough I guess but your favourite funk 45? I expected better Matt!

Blank Labeled The Casultars. Any One Know This?

Got a release according to Autumn discography and is in Autumn discography as the same https://www.globaldogproductions.info/a/autumn.html -
That's a dancefloor rescuer surely! Are you certain you weren't playing to punk crowd..?
-
...or that you're just naming random funk records as you remember them. So come on then Frosty Jack - what makes any of the above tunes so special for you? Why (from your perspective) are they so much better than any of the 45s anyone else has mentioned..?
-
Thanks for all the responses so far. Can I remind people to add title and artist so those unable to view video clips know what the tune is. Also if you could say a few words about why the 45 you chose is a particular favourite - otherwise it just looks like it's the only record you know Meantime here's another from me: Scorpio and his People - The Unforgiven - International Hits. The appeal for me is the same as with any low budget rare soul 45, where they seem to have managed to create something with a quality that surpasses the cash available (and possibly the talent too). A rare 45 that almost sounds like the blue print for a lot of Truth and Soul output. And that badly hand drawn label manages to be a thing of beauty in its sheer awful amatuerness!
-
Great call Ephraim - that Lou Courtney 45 is a regular spin for me. And boy you got dead lucky with Soul Swingers - congrats! Got to say these sort of tunes do it for me a lot more than the "funky Wigan" type tunes that some seem to prefer. Personal choice and all that though, I guess, so whatever floats your boat guys

This will work but will doing it repeatedly will probably reduce the life of the record to the extent where the only way you'll get a decent sound out of it is to play wet. The person who introduced me to this method aeons ago suggested it was an effective technique to get a decent recording of a record, but said that was the only thing he'd use it for. This was in the days before easily affordable vinyl recording software with filters etc. Personally I'd clean the record as above but would wait until it's dry before playing. I'd also think a spare stylus and a good deal of care would be in order if you're going to use some of the "set weight to max and gouge away" tips previously mentioned.

I've had copies with different labels - glossy and matte. Neither had the Bunky's Pick legend so that's at least three variations of the stock copy.
