  1. Exactly. But as you know, some people hear no soul in Jamaican music. We train our ears sometimes - maybe unfortunately - but different strokes etc, Godz
  2. Your memory has accompanied Doug and Tony through the Time Tunnel in that case my friend. Mind you that's only if I understand your post - and there's a good chance I have the wrong end of the stick Godz
  3. There's a guy here in Scarborough who runs a very insular mod night who claims to depise anything even slightly funky - but he plays BW Souls - Marvin's Groove. Swears it's R&B and says it can't be funk because it's a 60s record! Godz
  4. Well... the drums, the bass line and the horn riff that kicks in at about 30 secs and is repeated throughout the tune. And some funky shouting when it comes down to it. Seriously, I don't think there's much doubt given the flip and the bands' other 45 on Tec that they were making funk records. Just another case of the Northern scene picking it up which kinda reinforces my original point. Not worth getting too analytical about though. That way lies madness. Godz
  5. Not having a knock, Pendulum but I was waiting for someone to say that. Which is most likely? Track is laid down and Gene & musicians say "Damn that was funky" Track is laid down and Gene & musicians say "Damn that's a good Northern Soul tune" The first music venue I ran had a barman who was fanatical about Metal and could only see things in those terms. We had an Irish folk rock band that played regularly (You Slosh for anyone from York / Scarborough area who might remember 'em). They were so good that everyone from punks to folk purists to rock an rollers loved them. Point is Al, the Barman desribed them as "Folk/Metal" ie he liked them so they must be Metal, even though that wasn't remotely the case. I think this happens on the Northern scene, particularly with oldies from way back. If it's a funky tune that was adopted by the scene, then it stops being funk because it's Northern. What's the problem with accepting that it's funk? You'll all be saying Broadway Sissy is Northern next Good debate though. Godz
  6. Captain Unspeakably Awful reporting for duty, Saahhh! Funk is probably as a broad a church as Northern Soul. Personally, I find it odd that loads of people on the Northern scene will listen to really lame post-disco stuff quite happily, but have no time for a rough and ready, hard hitting piece of 60s funk. As much as I love Northern Soul, I think a lot the devotees can be a bit closed minded . At the funk night I ran for two years you could drop a 60s Northern track between a couple of slabs of funk with no detriment to the dancefloor. Try to drop an out and out heavy funk track at a Northern do and you'd clear the floor. Godz
  7. Which reminds me, I'm in the middle of organising a gig here: Cool venue eh? Godz
  8. Dunno about that club. I arrived here in '84 and the main club locals talk about is the Penthouse, which hosted hoary old rock bands like Free and Bad Company but later redeemed itself with the Pistols and the Stranglers. There is a Hairy Bob's Cave https://www.horbury.wakefield.sch.uk/Depart...SCF0714_JPG.htm but that story is bollocks. I think it was a man made odditty from the 60s or 70s. Does have a webcam though: https://www.imaginativeicing.demon.co.uk/Sc...amHairyBob.html Stunning eh? There have been a few Hairy Bob's Cavern nights over the past couple of years but they have been gig nights at various venues organised by local fruitcake Cap'n Ants (of the icing shop link above) Here's some of his stuff: https://upforit-site.co.uk/excentricity_cam_archive.html Not much help I know. I'll ask some of my pals and get back Godz
  9. Apologies if this has already been pointed out. Some new releases from the vaults of Sammy Campbell. Not the best of the four tracks currently out, but the one that most makes you go "ooh - that's the Del Larks..." Funky Music Machine: https://mp3.juno.co.uk/MP3/SF227940-01-02-01.mp3 Deffo isn't it More info: https://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea...iendid=25537328 Godz ps first link is to a legitimate music shop's site so I assume all samples are authorised.

  14. Yup. Lincoln Nebraska. Godz
  15. Completely agree Soulgirl. It would look much better with some fat old British people dancing to black and white footage of the Major, rather than a young, funky and contemporary (at the time), black audience getting down live. Godz
  16. Just like to say cheers to Northern Nev. Great service, good prices and grading, friendly PMs and a freebie in the package. As there's no official feedback sytem when buying from sellers who advertise on soul source and good manners costs nothing I thought I'd take the opportunity to say cheers. so here goes: Cheers Nev Godz
  17. That'll be Talbot Hotel then - aka my pub. I had the lease between 1994 and '97. Ran soul nights with my old mucka Nick Ward who's just about AWOL these days. After the pub closed we moved to the Conservative Club for a while (huge compromise for me - but it did have an ace dancefloor...). After that we went to the Royal Hotel until middle of1999. Nick fell out with the 3rd partner Adey Stelling. I couldn't be arsed with taking sides and quit. The club folded and Adey started the 99 Soul Club at the Corner. Have to say I still miss Wardy I actually did a spot at Jinxys night last Friday. Bloody nightmare. Back to the old funk nights for me as far as Scarborough goes Godz Top (Soul) Cat eh? That you Mr Bowman? Godz
  18. Still sounds like ska to me. But then again I am stubborn Godz
  19. Wot you on about strange noises? Ah I know - my mate started a ska band around '80ish - they ended up as The Burial and their songs still get included on Oi! comps although they were never really an Oi! band. Anyway, he's about 15 and he goes into the local music shop and says "have you got one of those things that goes "chikachukchuk chikachukchuk" in a Prince Buster Stylee. Music bloke pisses himself of course... Still sounds like Ska to me mate Godz
  20. Think it's called Ska Ken Godz
  21. Sugar and Dandy are Sugar Simone and Dandy Livingstone. Godz
  22. ...and a brother called frank maybe Godz
  23. Makes sense I guess. I think I may have been thinking about Europe rather than Canada as well Godz
  24. Aren't Canadian copies of this usually on Rare Earth - or am I thinking of something else? Godz
  25. To be fair, Dan, I only remembered because I pulled out a bunch of those CDs from the swap around two weeks ago. You and Derek both put William Hunt - Would You Beleive on the swaperoonies and that track has been a firm fave in our house lately. Godz
