  1. Just chatting to a mate about tunes, when he says "what was that tune that Butch used to play, same backing track as Yvonne Baker, didn't say a word"? F***k me I can't remember...........didn't it get released, so Butch stopped playing it? Last one I remember getting released was his Barons of Soul. Was the release a slightly different take, or slower or summat? Any help please, it's driving me bonkers now.
  2. Is the sound quality on the Tony Ross very poor Carl, I mean Pumpkin Seed........sorry.
  3. Karl used to join in with vocals on the mic at Burnley.
  4. Ah, thanks Tony, that explains why nobody seems to know about the Vick release. Even Tim Brown has never had it.
  5. Yes, that's the one Pete.
  6. Just purchased a copy of "Hook Line and Sinker" on Mica for a friend. Looking in the price guide this tune is also on Vick, as is his other recording "you change my whole life around" So, I would imagine that the Vick recording is the original? So what is the Mica release? A boot, a reissue? I have also been informed that the two releases are different takes of "Hook line and sinker"? Anyone have a sound file of the Vick release? It must be a pretty rare 45? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.
  7. I don't understand this...............I know people who have bought records off ebay that played very badly with many pops and clicks. Then I have heard them play that record out, and it has sounded perfect. They said they had the record polished. Surely if a record has many scratches, and is noisy, it will play better when these scratches have been removed?
  8. I must be mistaken then.........I thought the idea of polishing / skimming was to make badly scratched records play better? Otherwise there's no point in doing it.
  9. Sorted now, thanks to all who helped.
  10. Ronald Isley has the voice of an angel, no doubt about that. Their "my love is your love" is a tour de force, and probably one of the most perfectly constructed songs ever written. Never fails to lift my spirits and make me smile. If you want your heart ripped open then this is my fave.
  11. I used to pitch up and down when Dj'ing but never more than +/- 2, and purely for the dancers. If I am recording a track for home enjoyment, it will always be at 45 rpm exactly. My good friend Karl Heard was the master of the pitch control. He had no qualms about pitching some tunes up or down to the maximum. Like someone else commented earlier though, it was a shock when you heard them at the manufactured speed. But he could make a winner out of a duffer, a great Dj. Also, the people who have turntables with no pitch control, and who think they are purists. You better get your equipment checked regularly, because I have owned decks that have been miles off pitch when checked by an audio technician. One in particular I had for years, and all my recordings are ruined as the speed is too fast. You get used to your own turntable, so you don't notice any subtle changes. Some electrical components can deteriorate over the years, as can belts. I had to have some components renewed in my Sound Burger, and that had never been used. With a Technics 1200 or similar, you can see that the turntable is spinning at the true speed, with the strobe. Peace of mind.

  15. Yes, same thing. There's an awful lot around. I can recognise one easily, but have been sold them many times by "reputable dealers" I'm not sure how many people are activly involved in this practice, but one name keeps appearing every time this subject comes up. Buyer beware.
  16. Madness to pay that much for a record in this state. Having said that, it'll probably be "polished" to make it fit for Dj'ing, or sold on as mint. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/150801457971?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

  21. Always loved Fine x3........
  22. One that never features in these discussions, but in my opinion never ever turns up, is the Sonatas on Hot Line. The only copies that I have ever seen have come from collections and the copies were obtained in the 80's, and most have been hammered by their dj owners. Never seen a "fresh" copy from the States. Milton James is, as far as I am aware a 3 known copy record, still. The Contessa must be one of the rarest. I have only ever heard of the one copy.
  23. But true mate.
  24. Very astute, and very profound. I will always love the music, but there isn't enough "quality" new stuff, to keep me interested. And it's really easy to give up going out to soul events..............just go to a few without drinking alcohol, or taking any gear. Then you will realise how bad things are.
  25. Fair enough mate, good luck.
