  1. I stand corrected then Tony, Cliff obviously heard you play it. I should also have mentioned that you were responsible for bringing some great records to the attention of us all. That early nighter with you and Steve guesting was a classic night.
  2. Nobody was playing it though we're they?
  3. Yes but nobody was playing them, or interested in them. It's one thing knowing a record exists, it's quite another to have the taste to play it.
  4. Er yes it would. Like I said earlier, it has been selling for big money for a few years. But that was by people who knew what it was and had heard Cliff Camfield play it as Daydreams by the Daydreams in his set back when I was running Burnley. I remember Steve Green was desperate to get it back then and was advertising on here for it. Despite people on here not liking to hear it. A lot of the records that people are talking about now, we're played at Burnley and as a result have become sought after by other Dj's. Cliff Camfield is head and shoulders above anyone else, yes even the great Butch. He's the only person who I would go out to hear play a spot. Why?because he has great taste, and he knows how to entertain a crowd, and you will find yourself saying "wow! What the f**k is this" at some point during his set. Andy Killick is also responsible for playing some tunes that others have picked up on and have since become massive. I.e. the Proffs. Pottsy on the one and only occasion he Dj'd at Burnley was responsible for launching several records from obscurity to stardom. Including Dewy Black. Terry gets a lot of grief for singing the praises of the old Burnley. But the fact is, it was way ahead of anything else, and the passion that was created in the three and a half years it ran will never be repeated. If you missed it then the only way to get an idea of what it was like is to go to the next Burnley that Sean runs, and make sure you catch Cliff Camfield's spot.
  5. What a load of rubbish talked on here again. I was after a copy of Irma Routen a while ago. I asked all the big dealers, Tim Brown had never had it, I also put wants on here and scoured the internet. Nothing. I finally got one off the guy who had been playing the Daydreams side in his sets for ages, and because of that a lot of people were looking for it. As soon as I had recorded it and moved it on, one appeared on ebay I think it went for around £300 not sure. Sods law. In the scheme of things it isn't very good. But everyone is desperate for something new to play and that means that these type of records will get played out, and others will want to own them and that's when the price goes up. Supply and demand. The thread starter sounds very bitter because he sold it before the demand. And by the way, this record has gone for big money for quite a while. too many on here living in the past when big tunes could be found for sale at any allnighter and for peanuts. Yes and you could buy a terraced house for £2k around the same time. Get over yourselves. We all know that if you wait long enough the record you always wanted will turn up at the right price. The thing is, some of us want to own them when the emotion is still there, not 20 years later.
  6. Yeh, nearly as bad as £2k for Sir Joe on Ru jac.

  8. I've heard that Russian girls like an older man. Ha ha!
  9. There's too much discussion on here about how Dj's can make a venue. Promoters who haven't got a clue are the biggest problem. The old cliche of, find a room, beg borrow or steal any old p.a., invite your mates to be Dj's and the faithful will turn up in their hundreds, is in the main absolutely true. Anyone who wants to be a promoter should realise that people who travel great distances and pay their hard earned money, will expect a degree of professionalism. And most of all, they want to be entertained. Another common promoter faux pa is not sticking to the original ethos of the event. Letting every man and his dog do a spot because he will bring his mates with him. Or worse, turning a blind eye to playing boots is par for the course in my experience. Instead of trying to please everybody but actually pleasing no bugger, have some bollocks and stick to some principles. In a nutshell, put some bloody effort into it.
  10. My God I want to be young again. Stunning girl, and it states that it was shot in Moscow at the end. Northern soul dancing in Russia, who'd have thought?
  11. If you are cueing records up you should turn the anti skate to "0" (off) it is also imperative that you set the level of the tone arm to the record surface. If you add or remove turntable mats you will alter the angle.
  12. Ha ha! If only there were such a cart. As far as I'm aware, the only way to achieve your goal is to purchase one of those laser players. Trouble is they cost a fortune.
  13. Thought this was a thread that was asking the question "mid tempo, will it ever return?" Not please upload a load of terrible tunes that you have played out, and you can't understand why the dance floor wasn't heaving. I like mid tempo, but it has to have something special. You can't expect people to travel to a do, pay money and then be forced to listen to stuff that you think is great, but isn't getting a reaction from the dance floor. Sure, it can take time for a record to become popular, but most of these on this thread don't have anything to move a person to dance. We are all desperate for something fresh, but they don't make sixties soul any more, and you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear. Half an hour listening to this stuff I'd be phoning the Samaritans.
  14. If you are running a soul night, i.e. 8 till 2 then you can get away with more slow tempo mellow sounds because most people there will be drinking alcohol, and that makes people mellow. Especially towards the end of the night. If it's an allnighter, then most will be on gear and you've no chance of getting away with anything less than mid tempo. And not many of those. Anyone trying it when I ran Burnley would soon be visited on stage and would hear the immortal words " if you don't pick it up we're f***ing off" no names shall be mentioned, you know who you are.

  16. You are totally correct. You would cause more damage to your vinyl by fitting your own carts to a pair of decks at a nighter without setting up the tone arms properly first. I well remember James Trouble fitting his own carts in the decks at a Lifeline allnighter. What a disaster. Every record jumped constantly, and ruined his set.
  17. Yes it does, because you can't balance the tone arms with the Shure carts unless all the weights are attached. I'm talking about Technics 1200's now. I have never used any other turntable. Most people use light weight carts like the Ortofon and most have discarded the extra weights. Also, I used the White Label carts with only 1.5gms tracking weight and they worked perfectly.
  18. Wow! Tony, what a fantastic buy. Them were't days.
  19. Talc should be banned. If you had to clean up after an allnighter, you wouldn't use it again. It gets everywhere, and 5 minutes after you have removed it.............another load has descended. F***ing nightmare!
  20. I used the Shure White Labels for years, and found them superb. I changed the needles every second nighter. Before I bought them I wrote to all the manufacturers asking for advice on the best cart/stylus combination to use for 60's/70's 45's. Shure were the only ones who got back to me, and gave me lots of information. For Djing, I think the White Labels are the best. By the way, if you are going to use the Shure White Labels, you will need to have the extra tone arm weights that screw in to the back of the tone arm. Otherwise you will struggle to balance it. These are very heavy carts compared to the Stantons etc. I think that's why you can use them with very little weight and they don't jump.

  22. I also love the record, but it is quite difficult to dance to and never worked for me when I used to play it out. Proper tumbleweed record in fact. Glad to hear you still have it Johno. Great picture, thanks for sharing.
  23. What a superb 45. Can't sit still if this comes on, just perfection.

  25. I agree the flip sounds really good. You have shown Ian Levine how it should be done. Controversial!
