I know it sounds cheesey now Pete, but back then I thought it was fantastic. Same goes for Susy's Serenade. No one will admit to liking it, but it was massive back in the day. Oh and Bubblegum Breakthrough, Footsee, Brown Sugar etc, etc. Ps. Just remembered one that was huge and I've never heard it since the seventies. Van McCoy- Soul Improvisations pt.1. I used to bloody love that at the Mecca.

To view the items below go to www.raresoulvinyl.co.uk and click on Auctions Min Bid NOV - A Moments Baby I Want You Hog 1000 M- 2000 One of the big surprises of the nineties was this turning out to be a record (Kent issued it as something else subsequent to the acetate). As with many Washington soul releases it is inherently scarce and this is possibly the only one in near-mint condition NOV - B Utopias Girls Are Against Me LaSalle 0072 VG++ 1500 Everything is rare on this Detroit label (even the rather under priced Buena Vistas instrumental) but this is the best of the four releases. Two sides as well, because many rate the reverse side ‘I Want To Go Back To My Dream World’. Condition is possibly better than VG++ - just a sniff below mint minus NOV - C Steve Mancha Did My Baby Call Wheelsville 102 VG+ 350 A low start price on the double sided Detroit classic for the simple reason that there is a mark which clicks AT THE VERY END. Other than that it it plays quite well. For that reason we have recorded the soundbite in full NOV - D Rubin You’ve Been Away Kapp 869 VG++ 500 Very strong VG++, almost Mint Minus in fact. Of course, a black stock copy is the one to have. A record that disproves the theory that Northern Soul was ALL copied from Motown. I mean, what else sounds like this one? NOV - E Tony Michaels Picture Me And You Golden World 41 M- 250 Yes, a yellow STOCK copy. Ever seen one before? Not just as rare as Tamiko Jones on issue but not far off. NOV - F Vanguards Good Times, Bad Times Lamp 94 M- 700 Just who was the fantastic lead singer on some of these Vanguards discs? He’s almost up there with Marvin Junior of the Dells. Tremendous soul all the way NOV - G Joann Courcey I Got The Power Twirl 2026 M- 600 Careering, storming Northern Soul always packs dance floors, never booted either. Still a winner for any enterprising deejay NOV - H Brother To Brother Gotta Situation Win Or Lose 224 VG++ 200 Here’s an oddity for you — and it’s a tough one as well, only the second copy we’ve ever had. Sure, the promo is quite common but the issue copy with this side is certainly rare. An early seventies dancer that hardly anyone knowsNOV - I Ray Frazier My Baby’s Hand Wright-Sound 0002 VG++ 1000 One of only two known copies of this West Coast sixties dancer fashioned by Arthur Wrightr. A unique opportunity to obtain a certain ultra-rarity NOV - J Yolanda Lisi Mon Coer Qui Bat Tout Apex 13425 M- 100 Couldn’t resist putting this one on! Yes a Canadian-only (as far as we know) French language version of ‘Don’t Pity Me’. Check the soundbite because it ain’t too bad at all — at least you’ll smile

We always used to play quality instrumentals at Burnley. Just as with vocal records there are good instrumentals and terrible ones. Back in the day they were massive, and I still much prefer the instrumental versions to the classics like, Exus Trek, Breakaway, Rosemary What Happened etc. Karl used to play Gentleman June Gardner and follow it with Bo jr. both superb atmospheric records. The place used to go mental.
-
A good friend of mine once came up to me at one of my promotions and said, "do you realise that you and me are probably the only ones in the room [it was very busy] that aren't on gear?" I am very naive on this subject, but I rather think my friend knew what he was talking about.
-
I appreciate and respect your opinion. He is a great guy, I just personally don't like the way he mixes up the musical genres in his sets, and the messing with the mixer drives me nuts. I have told him this to his face, he just smiles.
-
I'm sorry but I thought it was your good self that was insulting me? By posting sleeping smileys you are basically saying that my posts aren't worthy of a written response. I thought this was a public forum for the discourse of rare / northern soul music? If you want a forum of sycophants and like minded back slappers, then I will refrain from any further posting. Best regards, Phil.
-
Fair enough Chalky, I'll try and refrain from any further posting. You will have to forgive me if I don't rush out to hear these "new records" after listening to the highly acclaimed, and highly priced Sir Joe 45, I'd rather have my toe nails extracted with a pair of rusty pliers than listen to any more of that ilk. Best regards, Phil.
-
I feel the same about your posts too Chalky, especially your record recommendations, but I'm far too polite to insult you with sleeping smileys.
-
I apologise then Pete, but it does sound the business played out and always packs the dance floor.
-
I apologise for my negativity, but I just despair of listening to the records on these threads. I keep praying I will click on the sound file and think wow that's fantastic. Never happened yet, and just seems to underline the fact that the music that I consider to be "northern soul" isn't the same as everyone else on this site. And that there aren't any new to my ears "wow" records left. Please don't get me wrong, a few of the records that have been suggested in this thread I really like. But I was already aware of those.
-
No I just got fed up of traveling all over the country to support very badly run events playing music that is inconsistent, and being deafened by rubbish sound systems that are either not up to the job, or aren't set up properly. Or both. I ran an allnighter for three and a half years. The people who came on a regular basis informed me that it was the best in the country, and that I had spoiled them. Nothing else came close. Their words not mine Chalky. That allnighter was my life for those years, but everything has a lifespan, and when Karl had to give up and Cliff and Andy started letting me down, the writing was on the wall. It's a pity a few more don't spit the dummy out instead of going through the motions and making a big deal of anniversaries. Flogging a dead horse springs to mind.
-
Guy would have probably been put off by the terrible lyrics.
-
Pete, it seems to me that anything that wasn't played at Wigan doesn't float your boat. You need to experience it played at an allnighter on a decent system. It's proper northern to me, great to dance to. The thing is, when we hear records at an event when the dance floor is packed and the atmosphere is kicking, then every subsequent time we hear that record, it takes us back to that time. Believe me, when you stop going out, you hear records differently. We start looking for more substance, bigger productions, more soulful voice and more meaningful lyrics. This also happens if you do go out, but you never dance. That's why people start putting records up on here proclaiming how great they are and how cheaply they can be got. Most of them are fine for listening to at home. But please don't expect to fill a dance floor with them. If a cheap record is good, one play at an allnighter and there will be a rush up to the decks to see what it is. If this doesn't happen leave it at home.
-
That's in a completely different league Pete.
-
Now I remember why I stopped going out. You're just kidding yourselves that these average records are something special. They are not.
-
Like I said it's constructive criticism, not personal attacks. The scene is stale and controlled by cliques of individuals and long time Dj's who are worshipped for what they once were, not what they are now. Someone mentioned James Trouble, and although I don't agree with a lot of what he did, he was at least trying to give the scene a kick up the arse, which it really, really needs.
-
Exactly! he's a very nice man, but he wouldn't get near the decks at any nighter of mine. You're only as good as your last set in my opinion, and history counts for nothing.
-
Hear, hear. Nail on head time.
-
I have no problem with playing cheap records, but playing ain't no mountain high enough at what is supposed to be a top allnighter? Is taking the piss as far as I'm concerned. And you have just highlighted what I was saying. Just because someone has been around the scene since God was a lad doesn't mean they are great Dj's. People on this scene take constructive criticism as a personal attack, when it's not the case. That's the reason the scene is so stale and amateurish. The same people have been running the scene for too long, but if you try and create something that doesn't include these stalwarts, the politics and back stabbing will start. Most of the so called top allnighters have crap sound systems for a start. Many of the so called top Dj's don't have the first idea about the equipment they are using. They invariably mess about with the gains and the promoter doesn't have a clue. Stop looking back at what the scene used to be, and stop putting up with badly run events.
-
Don't think there was anything good about playing that track at a nighter. I would have been mortified. It's hardly northern is it? Just another collector who shouldn't be Djing in my humble opinion. Too many big name dj's going through the motions.
-
Is this the Roy Hodgson thread?
-
This is for Sooty Just following on from what Chalky has said. Many have come back and tried to pick up where they had left off. It will never happen. Ask the gentleman that used to run the Morecambe Pier allnighters. I apologise for forgetting his name, Shaun something? nice guy. He got in touch with me a few years ago when I was running the Burnley events and asked if he could come to my next nighter and flyer it for the big relaunch of his Morecambe Pier allnighters. When he told me that he had decided to make a comeback, that he hadn't been on the scene for many years, and then told me the Dj line up, I just smiled and said no problem, fill your boots. That went well didn't it? You can't recreate the past. The ethos was always listen to this, it's fantastic, and you can't hear it anywhere else. er not anymore. They don't make 60's records anymore, and we've heard all the northern. Don't get me wrong, if you could find some unknown 60's northern, people would come. In fact I think that's how Ady keeps going at the 100 club because he keeps unearthing gems. Well that and the mystique of the hallowed venue. However, when I went to the 100 club a few years ago, I was very disappointed. I even went for a second look, just in case I had gone on a bad night. But no, absolutely nothing going for it except the social aspect. Sorry if that offends anyone, but I'm entitled to my own opinion, and to me it doesn't deserve it's reputation anymore.
-
It really does sound like a Detroit recording, fabulous record.
