Got any rare stuff mate? Ha, ha, brilliant stuff guys.
-
Exactly what I said. It would be a gamble. I have never understood the label collectors, to me it's all about what's in the grooves. But if it's a fantastic record, and it's rare, and it looks gorgeous. Well then that's magic. To me having listened to a lot of the discs in John Manship's book, and on his rarest of the rare section when it was there. I thought they were nothing to do with northern soul, and weren't worth listing. For a book to be interesting to me, I would want to see scans of records I dream of owning, not records that are rare but when you hear them you never want to hear them again. Label collecting is just like stamp collecting.
-
-
Yes Pete, that looks excellent. Although I wasn't considering scanning the vinyl, but thought of putting two label scans per page.
-
I was considering doing a book of rare soul scans as I love looking at them myself. It was just an idea that myself and Andy Killick kicked around for a while but nothing came of it. I was thinking it would be a very good quality hardback, coffee table type tome. I thought that the Manship Million Dollars book was very poor indeed. The label scans were too small to be read, and some of the records featured were just rubbish in my humble opinion. Also his rating system was a mile out on a lot of the tunes. But that will always be open to individual opinion anyway. Oh and the pages fell out as well. I wanted to have actual size label scans in full gloss colour. Probably the cost of such a book would limit the amount that would be sold. And lets face it, we aren't all chin stroking vinyl junkies are we?
-
I don't understand the significance of that Nev?

Great instrumental, should be in the instrumental thread mate. Used to go down well at the bat cave. -
Has Sandy Golden On Masterpiece Been Booted?
Quinvy replied to Col Wolfe's topic in Look At Your Box
Fascinating thread. Still find it hilarious that so many collectors can't accept that minty originals can still turn up. Have you seen the size of the U.S.A.? Congratulations to the gentleman who has found it. Great record. Just a thought for the conspiracy theorists amongst us. I was chatting with a friend today, we were discussing the new 3D printers. Apparently, someone has made a perfect copy of the Pink Floyd album Dark Side of The Moon. Apart from being a complete waste of vinyl, it does make you wonder just what will be possible in the near future. Scary. -
You appear to be in that clique Byrney.
-
To answer you're questions. Karl was unable to carry on. Cliff and Andy were unable to commit to every month, and as far as I'm concerned those Dj's are irreplaceable. Combine that with the fact that we were all struggling to find new quality stuff to play. Basically it had run it's course. And yes, I'm amazed at the people who attend Sean's night that never came near when I ran it. Could be I'm not one of the clique that more or less run the soul scene. Could just be that I ran it for the dancers and not the people who expected to get a spot there. Maybe I'm just not well liked, who knows. it's history now.
-
I would have given anything for a copy of this in the early seventies. THE TRIUMPHS - WALKING THE DUCK - Northern Soul
-
By the way Ady,I must congratulate you on having Andy Dyson on. He's one of the very few Dj's that I would travel to hear these days.
-
Fair enough Mike, it's your forum.
-
You are right, I didn't even realise that I was doing that, and I hate it when others do it. I am actually embarrassed that I have done that. But in mitigation, we can only express the things we have experienced, but yes, I apologies for that. I don't actually have an agenda at all. My promoting days are long gone and I haven't been out on the scene for years. I am opinionated though, and can't resist joining in. Just because you like someone, doesn't mean you agree with all their opinions. But on this scene people take that as a personal insult, when that's not the case.
-
Of course you are allowed to reply to criticism that's the point. This is a forum for discussion of opinions isn't it? I was just defending the guys right to air his opinion. You started a thread to promote your night in all about the soul, which to me seems like an unfair advantage over all the other promoters who wouldn't be aloud to do so. All of the posters except one were extolling your event as the muts nuts. I can't see how one comment out of all the other posts will be detrimental Ady. I also don't think that answering the guys post by name calling does you any favours. After all, this guy used to be a regular at the 100. Also, if you are enjoying a renaissance, why the need to start the post in the first place? I have no axe to grind Ady, and I congratulate you on turning it around again. My promoting days are long gone thank God. I know just how hard it is, and I would never do it again.
-
Once again a person expresses an opinion and is lambasted by all concerned. If you can't take constructive critisism you shouldn't be promoting, it rather comes with the territory. It's not personal f.f.s. we are all older and hopefully wiser, and we should be getting some sort of proffessionalism from our top allnighters these days. If you expect people to travel long distances and pay good money, then you should try and give them what they want. That's the point I have been trying to make. People daren't express their opinions on this scene for fear of upsetting the status quo. What you lot are saying is, this is how it's always been, so it must be perfect, and if you don't like it you can f-off. Well thats just what a bloody lot folk have done. In fact I think 75% of the best people that used to come to my promotions are no longer on the scene. And I don't blame them.
-
Things are worse than I thought when Huns Review goes for silly money and yet Sonny Herman goes for buttons. Has Butch played Huns Review or summat?
-
Shouldn't this be in events?
-
I personally feel that Middleton was a success because of one thing. The venue.
-
Hey Phil how are you, good I hope. I'm in total agreement, Instrumentals were massive back in the day, Mike Post - Afternoon, was hugh & rammed the dancefloor. I still love em but it wasn't about being Soulful, it was the dance beat & the handclapping that brought them alive. I understand what Bearsy means, I dislike R&B but there's exceptions to this rule. I still love to hear Mike & Ike - Sax on the trax, Mike Post - Bubblegum & Total Eclipse - 6 O'Clock plus Afternoon still raises the hairs on my neck. I must say that Sam's new "Prove yourself a lady" although not bad isn't a patch on the vocal & sounds great when sang along with your own wording in your head. The problem was that the infamous Simon tried turning everything into an instrumental,as did others & it basically killed it. We all loved & danced to a lot of stuff we're reluctant to admit to nowadays. Spot. Ey up Pete, I'm very well thank you, hope all is well with you. I agree, the instrumental can purvey that special something that sends you rushing to the dance floor just as much as a vocal record can. Butch's Sound of Philadelphia springs to mind. Best regards, Phil.
