  2. It was certainly played at Wigan in 75, I'll check some tapes for 74, a lot of these records were big in two or three venues at the same time though.
  3. Earlier this year I sold an original Del Larks issue and the chap I sold it to was actually suspicious because it was in fact mint, so he took it to Prestatyn to compare it to another dj's original. I don't blame him, paying such a lot of money, but it proves that even in 2014, a mint copy of a rarity can turn up. I'm not over the moon about having my integrity questioned when it comes to selling originals, but as I say, I guess if I was paying a lot of money and wasn't 100% sure, I'd check as well. Incidentally the copy was found in the UK!
  4. I was shocked when I saw the seller. Not.
  5. It's not that it's poor, it's just that to cram on 10 tracks per side, the sound gets quieter and quieter, so everything on that album is at a low volume.
  6. I am the seller of THIS comedy sale of the day. I sold a record on Discogs, the order came in on Christmas Eve at about 8pm, so I sent out an invoice then prepared to shut down for the holiday. Yesterday I got an email from the guy asking where his record was. He is in the United States!
  7. That's how I always tell them - the black at the top is deep, not browny tinted like on the reissue.
  8. Shawn Robinson was played way further back, it was reviewed by Dave Godin in Black Music in 1974, it was played at Wigan not long after by all the dj's, until it got booted in mid 1977.
  9. It was an imaginary scenario.
  10. https://www.mixcloud.com/mayfairmenthol/northern-soul-the-casino-years-1973-to-1975-part-one/ Okay this is how it really was, warts and all. In this next set of podcasts, I’m going to be tracing the history of Northern Soul via the Wigan casino years. Not Wigan again you say…well it’s the only place I went, so therefore I can recreate the playlists from experience. Obviously some records cross over to and start in other clubs, but the playlist below is what you would could have expected to hear had you been on the Northern scene between 1973 and 1975. This is the first part of two episodes looking back at some of the scene’s biggest records of the period in a not strictly but not far off chronological order. It doesn’t matter if I am a year or six months out on some tracks, please just enjoy the music. I did this live from vinyl so some records show a little wear — also, the left hand deck was playing up so one or two tracks may sound a little slow in parts, only one or two though. Hope you enjoy this, the series will be one of the best I’ve ever done. 11. Original British, yes...but be careful because it's been repressed three times on Tamla Motown, you have to have the right one from 1979 or you'll be arrested
  12. Now now Ted Holidays is worth 3 or 400, you're right
  13. Must be, I've only ever had the HMV version and it's definitely not live. Bizarrely, last year my missus told me to chuck all her records away or give them to charity, so not being a fan of mid 80's pop I was going to do that, but I noticed she had one or two 60's records like Everlasting Love, some Supremes, so I went through the lot and there was a Della Reese on HMV in with her records! I asked her why she bought it and she said she couldn't even remember buying it. I got her £30 for it.
  14. I'm going back to about 1999 mate when they were still cut on proper acetates...plus I got it wrong, it wasn't Spellbound, it was actually Spaceland!
  15. No Russ used to play this, as Art Gentry, only played it 3 or 4 times in the main room, it's definitely on a tape from April 77 that I posted up
  16. OK let's just say this happened, it didn't but it's just a scenario: the US release was delayed for some reason and the UK one came out first. Then that, in some people's minds, would make the original USA recording, a reissue! Which is why they can't apply the same rules to different countries, each country has it's own original.
  17. Really? Sister Lee is a monster of a record...Betty Boo I'd never even thought about until this topic came up
  18. US Revilot is the American original. UK London is the UK original. Neither is a reissue. They are both the first pressings in their respective countries.
  19. HMV version isn't live
  20. If you ever get to hear the backing track to Sister Lee, I swear you will be asleep by the end of it, you'd think it would be amazing but it's so monotonous. Mr. Rix gave it to me ages ago but of course I lost it.
  21. Starting to think you may be right about Sister Lee actually.
  22. Right ok, Betty Boo - Stop That Boy is the same as Hold Your Horses - right?
  23. Eddie posted up the same backing track version above though...Jimmy Soul Clark
  24. Most of Popcorn's records start with that drum roll!
  25. This is another superb show, thanks to radio 2 for these. The Formations, what a record...
