  1. Well I think Skullsnaps is one of the most bizarre, mind boggling and brilliant records ever made...everything about it, the production, the vocals, the drama of the whole thing. Frankie Crocker must surely sound a mess to anyone not on the northern scene but it's an amazing record to dance to. The Lovelites is one of the most beautiful records I've ever heard, very plaintive and emotional - and as for Monique, I love her raw vocal performance, especially near the end when she sings the line "I love you baby - yes I do" and her voice actually cracks with the intensity of the performance. Apart from that, don't like soul music much
  2. Great idea.
  3. UPDATED
  4. Well said Moggy, absolutely 100% spot on.
  5. PETE SMITH 28 JENKS ROAD WOMBOURNE WOLVERHAMPTON WV5 0BL 01902 893569 pete.smith@freeuk.com LORETTA WILLIAMS - BABY CAKES - JOTIS ISSUE EX+ 55 Lovely copy - seen this for silly money lately SOLD THE LEWIS SISTERS - YOU NEED ME - VIP VG+ 20 Plays great - lovely beat ballad APRIL STEVENS - WANTING YOU - MGM DEMO M- 50 Top copy SOLD JOJO PETITE - JOEY - BOSS M- 125 SOLD This is the same song as LITTLE JEANETTE - CRAZY CRAZY - GREEN LIGHTS but with a much tougher vocal. Same backing track, way harder to find. Books at 200. THE MYSTIC MOODS - ASTRAL TRIP - WARNER BROS DEMO EX 35 Couple of marks not affecting play OK don't laugh FRANK FURTER & HIS HOT DOGS - IMITATION - UPTOWN DEMO EX 250 Shame about the lousy group name - this is the flip of a novelty record called The Green Weenie! But it's an absolutely stunning beat ballad/ender sung by a Little Anthony type vocalist which you can find on John Manship's rarest of the rare for 500 quid. This doesn't have the cartoon picture sleeve. If anyone wants to hear it, I can send an mp3. Postage is extra, thanks for reading. Card, paypal (4%), cheques, cash all accepted.
  6. NOW SOLD Got another copy of this but it has to be more expensive than the last one which was only VG++, this one has one little mark on it but apart from that it plays mint, so I'll grade it as EX+. Want £55 for this one. Postage £1.80 recorded £5.50 special. cheers. pete.smith@freeuk.com
  7. Certainly takes a while to grow on you that record. I like it now, when I first heard it I just didn't get it at all.
  8. You think Dean Barlow is a 'truly soulful record'? There's only about 2 people on the entire thread who might agree with you.
  9. Sold now, thanks
  10. About the same. Have to agree with Lucky Charms and Pizza Pie Man. Add to that list Fools Paradise.
  11. Me too til I ended up in hospital
  12. Kev - in I think it was late 78, Evison reactivated LJ Johnson and it went truly massive again, three years after initial plays. I don't think I've heard it played since but a lot of those records have actually dated pretty well - Barbara Pennington's 24 hours a day and Running in another direction being two absolute corkers. In my opinion, obviously
  13. Er, yes it does actually Nev. Anyway, 'new' worst record is Bobby Sheen - Something New To Do
  14. No Del thats bollocks, I would loved to have seen Once Upon A Time but it was always either the wrong place or time, I bitterly regret never having seen it.
  15. Ian has expained to me that they haven't sampled anything - brand new technologly which didn't even exist a year ago now allows them to analize the unique frequencies of those northern soul drumbeats and change the sounds that they recorded themelsves to match almost exactly. Ian's got over 2000 master recordings, containing all of the original drums from Baby I'm still the same man, Your magic put a spell on me etc - and you can tweak these drum sounds to make them sound as if they come from any era.
  16. Joe Simon - Just Like Yesterday - Irral 778. EX+. £70 including postage. pete.smith@freeuk.com
  17. I was thinking that myself. They didn't have to come on here and explain themselves either, it's actually f*ck all to do with us on soul source or any other forum for that matter, I thought it was very good manners on the part of the production team.
  18. I reckon so too Eddie. Maybe I'll try and get an mp3 and post it in the media section so more people can hear it.
  19. Bit of a difference between one drum roll intro and a whole song made up from other tracks though. I like the Frank Popp records anyway.
  20. The thing is - if they are going to use well know artists such as Weller and Winehouse, there's no way they are going to be used in the dance sequences, they'd be used as the title theme or for some integral part of the movie. I don't know what else the film chappy and the music licensee can tell you apart from the fact that they are using original Northern tracks by the original artists. As for there being no love stories at Wigan - I met a girlfriend there who I went out with for nearly 2 years and am still in touch with now after 30 years.
  21. I think the problem is, we got so used to the Levine trademark production sound that we didn't feel the need to actually listen to anything else cos we know what it's going to sound like - I was genuinely surprised when I went onto his youtube site and actually listened to some of the tracks today. Did you hear the sample from The Sweets - Something about my baby, right at the start, I got that in one this record don't half grow on you after 2 or 3 listens though
  22. Well I was going to try to give you my favourite 10 records, but it's impossible just picking 10, I can't separate any of these, but they are all better than Dean Barlow the inspirations - no one can take your place john & the weirdest - can't get over these memories skullsnaps - i'm your pimp frankie crocker - ton of dynamite willie tee - walkin up a one way street betty boo - say it isn't so joanie sommers - don't pity me dusty wilson - it's going to be a tragedy little ann - what should i do epitome of sound - you don't love me monique - if you love me the lovelites - my conscience (not 'get it off') coasters - crazy baby karmello brooks - tell me baby ster phonics - don't leave me yum yums - gonna be a big thing jj barnes - please let me in
  23. £250 or thereabouts
