No wonder people stopped going.

What on earth is that Norma Tanega record doing there?
-
Christine Quaite is an okay version of Jimmy Radcliffe. Soulmates was a big record about 10 years back and even came out in the States. You Got Me Hooked is by The jet Set on Parlophone, well the one I know is.
-
Back in the early days of ebay I lost several hundred pounds by buying a job lot of 3 or 400 soul records described as being in vg/ex, every one had to be thrown away because they were in too poor a condition to play. The seller is a member on here, UK based. Forgiven but not forgotten.
-
No I think she was a former member of The Belles or some group similar
-
It's only on the blue VJ label same as Don Thomas - issued for the first time in 1975 - I still think this is a SS job
-
Yeah if you say so
-
Malc - I'd guess it was because of the link with the Spark label - Tommy Hunt etc. You can't book a funk/rock band on the strength of one track to play a 45 minute set.

Spirit Of 75 - Cleethorpes / Mecca / Wigan 70's Stormers
Pete S posted a topic in All About the SOUL
Back to the days of Cleethorpes, Blackpool and even Wigan - these 70's stormers were loved just as much as the 60's greats, and they sound even better today. So here's around 25 examples of that classic Cleethorpes sound circa 1975, hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed putting it together! https://podcastmachine.com/podcasts/4425/episodes/21483 HAMILTON BOHANNON - FOOT STOMPIN' MUSIC (BRUNSWICK) / THE CROW - YOUR AUTUMN OF TOMORROW (INNER EAR) / JAMES BYNUM - TIME PASSES BY (PHILLY CITY) / TODAYS PEOPLE - SOS (LINDEE) / THE WORLD COLUMN - SO IS THE SUN (TOWER) / PRINCE GEORGE - WRONG CROWD (DPG) / LIBERTY - GIRL YOU BETTER WAKE UP (BASF) / EAST COAST CONNECTION - SUMMER IN THE PARKS (NEW DIRECTION) / LOU EDWARDS - TALKIN BOUT POOR FOLKS (COLUMBIA) / FRANKIE (LOVE MAN) CROCKER - TON OF DYNAMITE (TURBO) / ELOISE LAWS - LOVE FACTORY (MUSIC MERCHANT) / TOWANDA BARNES - YOU DON'T MEAN IT (A & M) / JOE HICKS - DON'T IT MAKE YOU FEEL FUNKY (AGC) / THE FRENCH FRIES - DANSE A LA MUSIQUE (EPIC) / NORMA JENKINS - CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT (DESERT MOON) / DENISE LA SALLE - DO ME RIGHT (WESTBOUND) / RODGER COLLINS - YOU SEXY SUGAR PLUM (FANTASY) / MARBOO - WHAT ABOUT LOVE (MIDLAND INTERNATIONAL) / CREATIVE SOURCE - DON'T BE AFRAID (TAKE MY LOVE) (POLYDOR) / DIANE JENKINS - TOW-A-WAY ZONE (CREATIVE FUNK) / THE DELREYS INCORPORATED - DESTINATION UNKNOWN (TAMPETE) / LIFE - TELL ME WHY (REPRISE) / MEL BRITT - SHE'LL COME RUNNING BACK (FIP) / THE GATURS - YEA YOU'RE RIGHT YOU KNOW YOU'RE RIGHT (GATUR) / ANDERSON BROTHERS - I CAN SEE HIM LOVING YOU (GSF) / DOBIE GRAY - HONEY YOU CAN'T TAKE IT BACK (WHITE WHALE) -
Because it's not Northern Soul and most of it's rubbish. https://podcastmachine.com/podcasts/4425/episodes/21483 if they played 70's like on the above, that's different

He's on about the instrumental mate not the vocal...

There's a thread somewhere about allnighters and I mentioned that St Giles was my first, think it ran for at least 2 years though just into 1977. The building is still there but derelict I think. Of all the people you mention, Aggy is on here as Agentsmith, who of course DJ'd at Sammies with Swoz, Max, Pep and loads of top name guests.
-
They appeared at the Casino to promote it. Pile of w*nk they were.

Unreleased Version - I'll Hold You - Frankie & Johnny
Pete S replied to Neil Rushton's topic in Record Sales
Neil, I bet this was recorded for BBC Radio not Top Of The Pops - plus it was the B side, not the A side, why would TOTP even consider broadcasting a non-chart B side? -
Sold mine for £150 last year - be happy to buy it back at that price
-
No I bought it off him I'm afraid, then sold it.
-
Not much help to you now but I had one on here about 5 or 6 days ago, nobody bought it so it went for £100 on ebay, was a great copy too. Sometimes worth browsing the sales sections.
-
No idea...why not start playing "The Loser" at soul nights, they don't come much better than that.
-
I've no problem with crossover reggae, but to 'most' people who are properly into reggae, this is a 2nd rate UK production, as are most things that came out of the UK 1971-74, whereas in Jamaica things were toughening up, in the UK they were adding large doses of saccharine to the sound by overusing strings. Consequently Trojan, and others, lost their customers, the UK Jamaicans didn't want to hear this candyflooss type of reggae so they stopped buying UK productions and only bought imported JA 'roots' tunes. Trojan's attempt to get everything into the Uk charts failed and they went bust, if they'd moved with the times they may have survived. This is why most reggae fans/collectors have little to do with the music from this period.
-
The thing is - I've had this for 15 years, and never in a million years would I have said it would stand a chance of being played at a soul venue, it was just a mediocre track on a mediocre cd (Trojan compilation called reggae In Your jeggae), I'm still amazed!

Glad it's not just me hearing things!
