No UK release...

He's unhappy about the fact that he would have won it at a lower price had it not been for the shill bidding, and I'd have been angry myself - this happens every day with reggae singles, fake bidder bumps up the price, I get offered a second chance but instead of being what I would have won it for, it's a quid less than the fake bidder 'won' it for. If there was no fake bidder, I'd have won it at a way lower price. Example, outbid on a Tommy McCook record, went for £32, I was offered it at £30, saw that I would have actually won it at £18 so told him I'd pay £18. Whether I bid £18 or £30 is not the issue, I was cheated out of getting it at £18. He sold it me for £18.

Thanks Joe. This is the trouble when commenting on a post in sales, often it looks like mischief-making but in this case, I couldn't not comment on it. I collect ska and reggae albums and have some experience of their value, which is why I thought Dean was referring to the Island LP.
-
One of the best known over here too, I'm surprised but it's well out of order.

£20 in Record Collector price guide.
-
No thats on the Soul & Ska album - different version to the single on Airborne.
-
Dean I'm not trying to get into an argument with you but why would anyone pay that for this album when there are no examples of copies ever having sold AT ALL on Ebay, why would anyone pay money for it? The Island album once went for £150, even that is now only £50. (Someone please back me up on this)
-
Dean are you sure it was this you sold for a few hundred and not her Island album, this is a budget album that sold in supermarkets for 49p, not the rare Soul & Ska album.

250-300 I think? Not as much asit used to be.
-
It's originally off the Driving Beat LP - the EP aka mini LP was issued for jukeboxes only.
-
Yeah it's Lou Johnson, I was just typing on auto pilot
-
It was recorded clandestinly during the PIL "Metal Box" sessions apparently, using Virgin paid for studio time - produced by John Lydon & Jah Wobble - I never even saw this when it came out, think I bought it in 83 or 84. Other side is good too, "Private Armies", pretty similar to the A side, kind of sparse and dubby.
-
Well I thought it was time to break up the Reggae/Soul pattern until the weekend with memories of some of the great records which I was buying between the years 1979 and 1982, who would have guessed back then that I was a secret post-punker LOL. Plus, quite a few people asked me to do a post-punk (and a punk) podcast so I hope this is ok for you. Excuse the couple of repeats from previous shows, they were too good not to include https://podcastmachine.com/podcasts/4425/episodes/27784 The Cure - Boys Don't Cry / Vivien Goldman - Launderette / Fire Engines - Candy Skin / Theatre Of Hate - Legion / R.E.M. - South Central Rain / Orange Juice - Simply Thrilled Honey / The Au Pairs - It's Obvious / Kleenex - Hedi's Head / The Cramps - Garbageman / Wah! Yeah ok thanks, been down, been up, as always. It was only when I saw your initials it got me thinking that this was your tape originally. I will actually amend the intro to say as such now.
-
There are endless Wall Of Sound copies - most are as good as the real thing - how about The Knickerbockers "Wishful Thinking" for starters. Ace have put out 2 cd's worth of WOS copyists entitled "Phil's Spectre", great stuff.
-
Yes it came out a few times on compilations, that album is the one I first started playing it off.
-
Yes, thats rare...a couple of weeks after they sent the tapes out, some c*nt wrote to NME saying all the tracks were the same and calling people who listened to it "Northern Vikings" and generally being rude about NS and the scene, cue me writing a letter to the NME for the first time in defence of the compilation and Northern Soul, and would you believe it, they actually printed it! Small claim to fame..
-
The Philips one, I remember buying this off Mark (Resolution Records) must have been about 1994, couldn't believe it when I saw it, I thought it was a UK pressing, looks identical to the British Philips label, in fact I printed a scan and did an article on it in my magazine Beatin Rhythm at the time because it caused quite a fuss in those pre-internet days.
-
I don't think a lot of people cared back then, another few records which have no soul content whatsoever but were still huge records (now forgotten) were "Dizzy" by the lester lanin orchestra and "Take a letter Maria" by Boots Randolph. And what about "Zola"? Crazy instrumentals which made for great acrobatic dancing.
-
No it didn't, I read her autobioography and it was meant to be a single but was pulled for some reason and she was gutted. (I got the autobiography from a little charity shop in the next village to this - and it was signed and dedicated by darlene Love!)
-
How odd, right next to me I have an mp3 cd I made to play in the car called "Best of the Kent Northern Soul compilations" and it has around 200 tracks on it, that's just the BEST! Something that makes me chuckle, a subtle Ady one liner, there was an album called SATISFYING OUR SOULS and Ady's first line said "No it's not a sodomites dream"

Articles: The Epitome of Sound - The Story
Pete S replied to Goldsoul's topic in Front Page News & Articles
This record never dates, it never fails to move me, it always sounds as brilliant as the first time I ever heard it and as far as I'm concerned, it's one of the top 5 Northern Soul records ever made, a truly unbelievable track. -
Wall of Sound was just a fantastic Spector soundalike - Phi Dan was one of his labels though I don't think he worked on the Florence Devore record. Best thing that he produced Northern-wise would have to be A Long Way To Be Happy by darlene Love. Oh and of course what about RAT RACE!!!
