DEAR LISTENERS I JUST GOT AN EMAIL FROM PODCAST MACHINE AND THEY SAY I'VE GONE OVER THE AVAILABLE TRAFFIC FOR THE PODCAST SITE AGAIN - IF YOU REMEMBER, LAST MONTH I HAD TO UPGRADE IT FROM 50 GB OF TRAFFIC A MONTH TO 100 GB OF TRAFFIC A MONTH AS SO MANY PEOPLE WERE DOWNLOADING. THIS PUT THE PRICE UP TO AROUND £25 A MONTH (BEARING IN MIND I DO ALL THIS FOR FREE AND EVERYONE DOWNLOADS IT ALL FOR FREE) ANYWAY THIS TIME THEY WANT $79 A MONTH WHICH IS FIFTY QUID - AND THERE'S ABSOLUTELY NO WAY I CAN AFFORD THAT. I DID ASK FOR DONATIONS AND A FEW KIND PEOPLE SENT SOME MONEY, FROM A QUID UPWARDS(YES, HONESTLY) BUT YOU CAN SEE HOW MUCH THIS COSTS NOW AND UNLESS SOME OF THE PEOPLE WHO DIDN'T DONATE CAN DO SO, WE'VE HAD IT I THINK. CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS, JUST THIS WEEK ALONE THERE HAVE BEEN 1252 DOWNLOADS, OVER 7000 ALL IN ALL, KINNELL IF ALL OF THOSE SENT 2 QUID WE'D BE ON AIR FOR YEARS! THE ONLY OTHER CHANCE IS IF I UPGRADE FOR SAY JUST A MONTH OR TWO, AND THEN DOWNGRADE AGAIN. SO ALL I CAN SAY IS, IF YOU WANT TO KEEP THE PODCASTS GOING, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SEND SOMETHING, ANYTHING AND I'LL PUT IT TO THE COST OF UPGRADING FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS. OBVIOUSLY IF I WAS EARNING ANYTHING OFF IT, IT WOULD PAY FOR ITSELF AND I WOULDN'T HAVE TO RESORT TO BEGGING. HAPPY LISTENING... PETE (paypal pete.smith@freeuk.com if you can)

Definitely not me - I'd wish them good luck with it

Two Bizarre Records I Just Got - Any Info Please?
Pete S replied to Pete S's topic in Look At Your Box
Right, mystery solved. Mick Reed confirmed that he had a copy of this BEFORE the styrene bootleg appeared, in other words, this is one of the early counterfeits being sold out of L.A., before the styrene bootleg was made. They obviously used the same stampers to make the bootleg, except they did it at a different pressing plant (Monarch) and pressed it on styrene. So this is the very first bootleg/reissue. -
Possibly Interesting Observations About Playing Oldies
Pete S replied to Pete S's topic in All About the SOUL
That's exactly the sort of thing I was thinking about, something you wouldn't normally play but you give it a go and it sounds great. All this reminds me of when I read Mark Freeman's oldies playlists when he DJ's, he seems to have no fear. -
PETE SMITH 4 BLAKELEY HEATH DRIVE WOMBOURNE WOLVERHAMPTON WV5 0HW pete.smith@freeuk.com 01902 326306 HERE'S SOME REISSUES AND BOOTS FOR SALE, NOT HAD SEVERAL OF THESE FOR A LONG TIME AND NOW SOME OF THE PRESSINGS ARE RARER THAN THE ORIGINALS! MEL BRITT - SHE'LL COME RUNNING BACK - FIP This is a real curiosity, it's the same boot as the first one, the 1976 press with stamped ZTSC number and white ring running round the label. However, all of those were on styrene - this is on vinyl! I asked on Soul Source and nobody could explain why there should be a vinyl copy, and neither had anyone else got one. So rather than Ebay it immediately, I'll put it up for offers of over £30. If I feel I've had a reasonable offer, I'll take it. I've never, ever seen one of these before. Condition is EX+. Value Please - Spooky & Sue - I've Got The Need
Pete S replied to Pete S's topic in Look At Your Box
He also used to do a list, this was 1987-89 time, every week he had the same originals for sale, and I mean for a year running: Gil Blanding "Rules" and that awful King Tutt record. he must have had thousands of them, it became a joke that we knew what was on the list before opening the envelope. -
That's good of you. It does work though. High reserves put people off - well they put me off anyway, dunno about the rest of them!

You're right, known for years and years -
Oh yeah I see what you mean: MIRACLE HAPPENS - POST DELIVERED IN UNDER 24 HOURS it's a f*cking disgrace actually, I had no post on monday or tuesday because they had no one to deliver it. I asked the postman today, he said at least two walks went without post.

Possibly Interesting Observations About Playing Oldies
Pete S replied to Pete S's topic in All About the SOUL
This made me laugh because I did EXACTLY the same thing with WEAK SPOT: everyone said it was coming out on Private Stock and I spent two schoolnights making a Private Stock label for it, only to see it come out on 20th century. I remember buying an Emidisc of Doris Jones "He's so irreplaceable" at Wigan, great version, I asked Ian levine about this a couple of years ago and he said that version never came out and was in fact lost. Wonder what happened to it.. -

Possibly Interesting Observations About Playing Oldies
Pete S replied to Pete S's topic in All About the SOUL
I didn't like it much either - ever - but it sounded bloomin' brilliant earlier on today. People thought this was a Soussan job when it first appeared, presumably cos it sounds just like The Joker. -
Please don't take offence at this but sometimes high reserves deter people from bidding - I just bid twice on the Silky Hargreaves and am obviously way under the reserve at £254 but people like to think they may be in with a chance of getting a bargain. A record like that, especially on issue, could be listed at £100 start and it will still go for between 350 and 450 quid. You won't need to sell your kidney with records like that at your disposal!

I got this box of records today, loads of oldies, so thought I'd do a podcast with a few things I haven't heard or played for a long time, so amongst the class items like Ronnie Mcnair, Billy Hambric, Frank Dell and so on, I put a few kind of 'never played anywhere' records on: LJ Johnson "Your magic put a spell on me", The Present "Manys the slip", Joey Dee "How can I forget", Benny Curtis "Dirty hearts"....and the interesting thing was, I absolutely LOVED hearing those records, maybe it's because I just couldn't remember when I last heard them but my favourite of the entire lot (today) was that inst of How Can I Forget! I remember my first ever trip to Wigan and this and Little Joe Cook were the two biggest sounds at the time. It just made me think how great it was back then when you could play almost anything. Granted it got a bit silly with all the UK label records in 78, but I think I definitely preferred the mid 70's to anything that followed it.

Duettes never came out on Stateside Chris, I bet you are thinking of The Sharpees Tired Of being Lonely

Yes it did, pink label, from the same source as Donna King, Tommy Bush, Tommy Sands etc -
Thank you for stating the obvious Nev. This IS my job and I do it well, like you do yours no doubt. Though when I was working I always used to do the post at dinner time...

Nothing to worry about on that score now mate - she died a month ago

Any ideas? Spooky & Sue - I've got the need (Belgian decca with pic sleeve). Had it a few times but never with the sleeve. Got to be worth £20?

That makes sense Dave, around the time of George Blackwell, kenny Smith, Dave Newman etc. Though the difference with this one, it doesn't have P.B. scratched in like the majority of those boots. But it is 100% definitely the same boot as the styrene one, with the heavy T on the ZTSC, identical - but on vinyl.
