THE STORY OF JAMAICAN MUSIC PART 5: BOSS SOUNDS * * * * * * * * * * * 1968, and the soulful Rocksteady has been replaced by the frantic sounds of The Reggay, or Reggae is it became better known. These tracks here represent some of the best early reggae tracks, most were cut in 1968, some are from 69, but these two years bought some incredibly exciting and vibrant music into the world and this is probably my favourite podcast of this series. There was so much material that I could have used that there will definitely be a second show concentrating on this period, though I may slow it down slightly as there are some really frantic sounds contained herein. This is a very long podcast but I promise it's worth the download time. Most of these tracks were released in the Uk at the time and are incredibly hard to find; after buying V Rocket and The Break I didn't have any change left out of £500! And needless to say - if you have any of these or similar records for sale, please do get in touch as I will always buy, or trade for rare Northern Soul 45's. pete.smith@freeuk.com * * * * * * * * * * https://podcastmachine.com/podcasts/4425/episodes/28389 CLANCY ECCLES - C.N. You'sd be surprised how tough this is to sell. For a VG one I'd ask maybe 175. For a mintish one, 350.

Was it the one with the pale green cover, it was the first thing they put out on cd and the quality was really bad.

Possibly Interesting Observations About Playing Oldies
Pete S replied to Pete S's topic in All About the SOUL
Same as what Jerry says below. Ian sent out promo copies to various 'influential' dj's on a label called Tomorrow, the rest of us plebs had to make do with emidiscs, bear in mind these were spun a good 2 months before they were released to create a huge demand. -
HISTORY OF JAMAICAN MUSIC PART 5: GET READY, ITS ROCKSTEADY * * * * * With the Rudeboy sound taking over from Ska, and with Jamaica in the grip of a particularly hot summer, the frantic sounds of Ska inevitably gave way to the smoother, slower, more soulful sounds of rocksteady. And whereas the instrumentalists ruled the Ska era, Rocksteady was the golden age of both solo and group sounds, particularly male groups. Here comes some of the greatest Jamaican music ever put onto vinyl. + + + Regular listeners will be familiar with many of the tracks on this particular podcast but they can be listened to hundreds of times over and never lose any of their power and beauty. I must have listened to The Techniques You Dont Care over two thousand times. I could listen to it another two thousand times and never become bored with it. The Treasure Isle label dominates this era but look out for great tracks by Erroll Dunkley, Llloyd & Devon, and in particular the most soulful rocksteady record ever cut, Derrick harriotts immortal The Loser. Sadly, Rocksteady only lasted for around 20 months. At the end of this session, listen to the tracks by The Eternals and The Uniques and you will hear the beginnings of what came to be known worldwide as Reggae Music. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * https://podcastmachine.com/podcasts/4425/episodes/28294 Honeyboy Martin Dreader Than Dread (Caltone) / Mr. Foundation See Them A Come (Studio One) / Errol Dunkley The Scorcher (Amalgamated) / Dobby Dobson Loving Pauper )Treasure Isle) / The Ethiopians The Whip (Doctor Bird) / The Techniques Queen Majesty (Treasure Isle) / Alton Ellis Rocksteady (Treasure Isle) / The Techniques You Dont Care (Treasure Isle) / Derrick Harriott The Loser (Island) / Prince Buster Shaking Up Orange Street (Fab) / Derrick Harriott Walk The Streets (Island) / The Melodians You Dont Need Me (Treasure Isle) / Desmond Dekker & The Aces 007 (Pyramid) / Prince Buster Too Hot (Blue Beat) / The Paragons On The Beach (Treasure Isle) / The Paragons The Tide Is High (Treasure Isle) / The Jamaicans Baba Boom (Treasure Isle) / Lloyd & Devon Red Bum Ball (Island) / The Uniques Gypsy Woman (Island) / The Conquerers Lonely Street (Treasure Isle) / Keith & Tex Stop That Train (Island) / The Sensations Those Guys (Duke) / The Melodians Last Train To Expo 67 (Treasure Isle) / Erroll Dunkley Youre Gonna Need Me (Rio) / The Paragons Only A Smile (Treasure Isle) / Desmond Dekker & The Aces Fu Man Chu (Pyramid) / The Uniques Love And Devotion (Nu Beat) / The Eternals Queen Of The Minstrels (Coxsone) / The Uniques My Conversation (Island) .

Possibly Interesting Observations About Playing Oldies

It was, I remember seeing it at the time. Evelyn Thomas was on as well, may even have been on the same show. But both wwere massive on pre releases before being officially released -
You are kidding Grant, right? You mean that home made recording?
-
Why are they making you offers on your set sale prices Steve? Tell them to f*ck off and find it somewhere else cheaper. Brass necks on here.

The following sentence is badly researched...the cameras came in in 1977 and the cash-ins had already been and gone by then In 1974, Winstanley asked the Wigan crowd one night if a BBC crew should be allowed in to film them. The answer was a resounding "NO!", despite this being a time when appearing on TV was seen as an achievement. A year later, the Casino relented and allowed Granada's This England crew in. Big mistake. When the show aired, it switched on thousands of young Britons. Within weeks, record companies were issuing novelty records by made-up bands of sessioneers such as Wigan's Chosen Few, and hordes tried fruitlessly to gain entry.

It's a bootleg I'm afraid. Had quite a lot of them. I think there was a topic about it a couple of weeks back.

Because it looks shit as a blank and I like to see some label credits for a start! I handwrite them but they look rubbish.

Two Bizarre Records I Just Got - Any Info Please?
Pete S replied to Pete S's topic in Look At Your Box
Yeah but thats the styrene one mate, thats the one everyones got it's the vinyl one I'm on about -
There were just too many great tracks to fit onto one podcast so here are more of the same from Ska's golden era. What's notable about this episode is that towards the end you can hear a new strain of the Ska coming in, commonly known as Rude Boy music (the Rude Boys (young hooligans) being the main target audience for these sounds). By the final track, Alton Ellis's "Girl I've Got A Date", you can hear a new influence beginning to appear: this was to become known as Rocksteady. * * * * * * RED HOT SKA 1965-66 PART 2 * * * * * * https://podcastmachine.com/podcasts/4425/episodes/27989 JUSTIN HINDS & THE DOMINOES - RUB UP PUSH UP / LEE PERRY - ROAST DUCK / THE SKATALITES - MISS SKA-CULATION / SPANISH TOWN SKA BEATS - STOP THAT TRAIN / TOMMY McCOOK - GOLDFINGER / BUSTERS ALL STARS - VERA CRUZ / THE SOUL BROTHERS - TRAIN TO SKAVILLE / THE ZODIACS - RENEGADE / THE SKATALITES - GUNS OF NAVARONE / BABA BROOKS - TEENAGE SKA / TOMMY McCOOK - ROCKET SHIP / THE SKATALITES - LON CHANEY / KING PERRY - DOCTOR DICK / THE SOUL BROTHERS - FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE / PRINCE BUSTER - DON'T THROW STONES / THE SKATALITES - I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER / BABA BROOKS - DUCK SOUP / THE RULERS - COPASETIC / RITA MARLEY - PIED PIPER / THE WAILERS - PUT IT ON / THE GAYLADS - STOP MAKING LOVE / BOB ANDY - I'VE GOT TO GO BACK HOME / DELROY WILSON - DANCING MOOD / ALTON ELLIS - GIRL I'VE GOT A DATE.

Really enjoyed it but shame they had to put so many special effects on, looks very similar to the footage of the 100 Club from the same period, same effects
-
Whats wrong with me wanting to tart up a blank label with a nice colourful one?
-
Got it mate, thank you!
-
Well I think you just need to go to www.paypal.co.uk and create an account, then you simply type in the email address of the person you want to send to, the total amount, and press send. It SHOULD be as simple as that I think, but maybe they have to confirm a card, I am not sure to be honest. But if you do it'll certainly be appreciated. pete.smith@freeuk.com

I just paid for the upgrade myself. Fingers crossed!
