Spot on really. Remember when you used to get soul packs in the 70's and threw away all the ones that weren't Northern? Well we did anyway. The stuff you chucked away was mostly crossover. Like when you got a great record, played the A side to death, tried the B side once and found it was forgettable and never went back to it. That's crossover as well. Of all of the different genres that comprise Northern Soul, crossover is the weakest because it was poor then and it hasn't improved over time, unlike say R & B which was obviously good back then but now sounds even better. You just have to get a record that's not northern but has the faintest trace of a beat, you call it crossover, it's so easy to do and it saves you finding any of the real stuff. Naturally there are the odd exceptions, but on the whole, 99% of what I've heard is garbage. The Margie Joseph record that Mal mentions above is one of the greatest soul records ever made, it's an insult to describe it as crossover. I feel so much better after a good rant.

I don't think they were The Slickers. On the Trojan Story sleevenotes it intimates that they were, and this is going back to 1972, but I played "Nana" the other day and it doesn't sound like them to me. I think it's because one of the Crooks brothers of The Pioneers was in The Slickers.

Dunno, thats why I said it sounds like them

Martha Reeves Getting All Cocky In Record Collector
Pete S replied to Pete S's topic in All About the SOUL
Okay here's what it says. Q: I RECENTLY SAW A CONCERT IN LONDON FEATURING SEVERAL FEMALE STARS OF MOTOWN (BRENDA HOLLOWAY, CHRIS CLARK, THELMA HOUSTON, MABLE JOHN), IT WAS A TREMENDOUS EVENING EVEN THOUGH THE VENUE WAS NOT FULL. A: Oh, you mean "newcomers" to Motown! Mable John, who was berry Gordy's friend, did record some early sides but try and find a Motown record with her name on! As far as playing to a half empty venue is concerned, if they had me - an original Motowner - on the bill, perhaps it would have been full. No one on that bill has the same status as me in this country so perhaps they should have asked! Q: ALL TIME FAVOURITE ARTISTS? A: Me. -
Martha Reeves Getting All Cocky In Record Collector
Pete S replied to Pete S's topic in All About the SOUL
Well the interview was with Dave Sallis who's a very well known UK based Motown collector, done backstage at a gig recently. When asked who her favourite artist of all time is, she says "Me - Martha Reeves". I'll try and find the mag so I can quote it exactly. -
I wish I had it with me to quote exactly but Martha Reeves is interviewed in this months Record Collector and the interviewer asks her about her appearance on a bill featuring other ladies of Motown including Brenda Holloway and Chris Clark (and maybe Carolyn Crawford) and Martha insinuates that these were no-hit artists who weren't fit to be on the same stage as her and people only went to the gig to see her! I think there may well be a few people on this forum who strongly disagree with that statement. I'd pay good money to see Brenda Holloway. You'd have to pay me to go see Martha Reeves. * FULL ACTUAL QUOTE FURTHER DOWN THE THREAD

I went to the Casino almost every week of that particular year including the nights when filming was done and I don't think This England made any difference in attendances whatsoever, especially as it took a long time after filming for it to be shown anyway. Things that must have affected attendances came two years earlier, including the dreaded Wigans Ovation and Footsee on TOTP and a Radio 1 documentary on Northern Soul broadcast on a saturday or sunday afternoon (used to have this on tape, lost it)

I've had that Belgian one and it sure is rare, think I got £200 for it and that was 5 years ago. I know Mick has found these at Utrecht as well. I had a Belgian "She blew a good thing" (American Poets) earlier this year, same design as this Frankie & Johnny but on London, could only get £20 for it! Never even knew it existed before.
-
I managed to sell mine today but I had to go down to £15!
-
I thought they'd been around a long time but Pikeys Dog above disagrees - surely it wouldn't have been booted twice.
-
Bet you've still got them
-
May I politely ask that if you post any more items today or in the next couple of days can you please post them all under the same header please instead of separate sales for each item, as per site rules. You've done three separate ones today. Sorry but they asked me to moderate and that's what I'm gonna do. cheers pete

THE STORY OF JAMAICAN MUSIC PART 6: SPIRIT OF '69 * * * * * * * * * * Continuing on from our previous look at the birth of Reggae, "Boss Sounds", this show features more of the same but as you will see, much of the material is less frantic than the original ultra-fast reggae from 1968. Not all of the tracks here are actually from 1969, but this is a good example of the sort of thing that was being played in the clubs and sold in specialist shops at the time. I've included a few better known tracks this time such as Red Red Wine, Hold You Jack (the original cut to Wet Dream) and No More Heartaches; rude reggae with Wreck A Buddy and The Rise & Fall Of Laurel Aitken (it took me 22 years to find a copy of this, searching since I first heard it aged 12 at our local fair and finding one eventually in 1994 - now there's one on Ebay every week!); there are some tremendous instrumentals from The Upsetters; and beautiful vocal selections from Alton Ellis, Pat Kelly, Audrey and many more. Audrey's "Love Me Tonight" must surely by one of the best reggae tracks ever recorded in the UK. My personal favourite here is Keith Blake's "Musically" which is actually very late Rocksteady. Been after a copy of this for many a year. Thank goodness for Vinyl Carvers! * * * * * * * * * * https://podcastmachine.com/podcasts/4425/episodes/28512 Prince Buster - The Scorcher (Fab) / Ronald Russell - Rhythm Hips (Nu Beat) / Keith Blake - Musically (Blue Cat) / The Paragons - Left With A Broken Heart (Duke) / The Gaylets - Silen River Runs Deep (Island) / Prince Buster - New Dance Called Reggae (Fab) / The Upsetters - A Live Injection (Upsetter) / The Upsetters - Dry Acid (Punch) / Pat Kelly - How Long Will It Take (Gas) / The Uniques - Out Of Love (Trojan) / The Melodians - Ring Of Gold (Gas) / Laurel Aitken - Rise And Fall (J.J.) / Tony Tribe - Red Red Wine (Downtown) / Dennis Walks - Heart Don't Leap (Bullet) / Audrey - A Lover's Concerto (Downtown) / The Beltones - No More Heartaches (Trojan) / Paul & Randolph - It Ain't (Blank) / Soul Sisters - Wreck A Buddy (Amalgamated) / Alton Ellis - Vreaking Up (Trojan) / Derrick Morgan - Hold You Jack (Island) / The Upsetters - My Mob (Camel) / The Slickers - Nana (Blue Cat) / Ansil Collins - Secret Weapon (Amalgamated) / Monty Morris - Last Laugh (Doctor Bird) / George Dekker - Foey Man (Island) / The Reggaeites - Harris Wheel (Crab) / Audrey - Love Me Tonight (Downtown) .

I was just about to use the buy it now on that until my missus caught on, said I'd never use it and it'd go in the garage with the other dozen record players I "had to have" and never used still going to have a sneaky bid on it though

It's like a white version of the brown Argo label. Was also booted on Soul Fox.
