  2. Andy the tune of Bobby Vee, well the main riff anyway, sound to me just like 'Nine times out of ten'!
  3. https://www.mixcloud.com/mayfairmenthol/on-the-brink/ This time I've gone back to the 60's singles; some unknown, some very well known. The first half is all UK label stuff and the second half are US releases. Some overlap of course. We start with a couple of very obscure popcorn tracks from 61 and 63 respectively, then there's a flurry of excellent mid-60's beat 45's, the Dodos track is a previously unknown (to me) version of Jon Gunn on Deram, The Youth is an obscure Claire Francis production, and the Barry Hopkins is an ultra-obscure pop-Northern dancer from 1970. The UK section ends with a phenomenal Hammond instrumental from the Soul Agents. Pick of the US stuff are Jackie Burns old Stafford cover up (actually from a UK MGM copy), the fabulous Jan Bradley, Len Barry's brilliant version of The Shirelles classic and the truly moving Manhattans original of The Uniques big reggae hit Out Of Love. I sneaked the Samantha Jones UK only release in at the end because I love it so much, and also three quarters of Earl Grant's obscure instrumental version of the Ben E King classic. So 70 minutes worth of "interesting" 60's 45's for you to lend an ear to. SOUNDS INCORPORATED - ON THE BRINK - COLUMBIA GARY LANE - START WALKING BOY - FONTANA MIKE HURST - ANY CHANCE FOR ME - PHILIPS THREE BELLS - OVER AND OVER AGAIN - COLUMBIA BARBARA RUSKIN - I CAN'T BELIEVE IN MIRACLES - PICCADILLY THE YOUTH - YOUR ONE AND ONLY MAN - POLYDOR THE ACTION - BABY YOU'VE GOT IT - PARLOPHONE DAVID BOWIE & THE LOWER THIRD - AND I SAY TO MYSELF - PYE THE DODOS - I MADE UP MY MIND - POLYDOR FEARNS BRASS FOUNDRY - LOVE, SINK AND DROWN - DECCA BARRY HOPKINS - A LITTLE TOO MUCH - SPARK THE SOUL AGENTS - GOSPEL TRAIN - PYE THE MARKETTS - A TOUCH OF VELVET, A STING OF BRASS - WARNER BROS BOBBY VEE - CROSS MY HEART - LIBERTY KERRI DOWNES - YOU WON'T FORGET ME - EPIC BOBBY JOHN - SHADOWS OF LOVE - IMPERIAL KIP & KEN - TROUBLE WITH A WOMAN - CRUSADER JOHNSON SISTERS - I FOUND MY PLACE - BROADWAY HEDY SONTAG - HE NEVER CAME BACK - PHILIPS DELLA REESE - BLOW OUT THE SUN - RCA JACKIE BURNS & THE BELLES - I DO THE BEST I CAN - MGM NINO TEMPO & APRIL STEVENS - ALL STRUNG OUT - LONDON JAN BRADLEY - BEHIND THE CURTAINS - NIGHT OWL GENE THOMAS - I'D RATHER NOT TALK ABOUT IT - UNITED ARTISTS LINDA HOPKINS - MEMORIES AND A BROKEN HEART - BRUNSWICK LEN BARRY - WILL YOU STILL LOVE ME TOMORROW - DECCA ANITA HUMES & THE ESSEX - WHAT DID I DO - ROULETTE SAMANTHA JONES - I DESERVE IT - UNITED ARTISTS THE MANHATTANS - THE ONE THAT LOVE FORGOT - CARNIVAL EARL GRANT - STAND BY ME - BRUNSWICK
  4. It's the B side of Zola by King Errison. Obviously bootlegged them at the same time and somehow there was a mix up. Probably 1 in every 4 plays this tune.
  5. I guess they could have overlapped, JB was late 77/early 78. Anyone could have cut that though, there were loads of people doing them.
  6. It's just an acetate cut for the Northern scene Kev. Worthless unfortunately. Bernadette Catsro was a 2 week wonder which got bootlegged.
  7. John reckons it has but I've never been convinced, I know someone found the dead stock (either John Anderson or Kev Roberts) and they were sold for £3 each which was double what pressings sold for, I never heard a hint that there were counterfeits until maybe 10 years ago. There are certainly two variations though. As for the one that plays Heaven on both sides - I've seen them where they play the B side on both sides two. This may mean that it certainly was pressed.
  8. Weird isn't it, I listed the first pressing, the two shields design lookalike, for set sale this week and I've still got it - was expensive (for me), think it was £20, but not half as expensive as those on ebay!
  9. I sold four or five so I removed them...now I sold four or five more so removed those also
  10. https://www.mixcloud.com/mayfairmenthol/new-sounds-1978-81/ dunno what happened to the link, I didn't delete it p.s. can anyone possibly know what you mean about food in the wardrobe? Clue: it was a hiding place for sundays after Wigan
  11. Found this but haven't tested it https://clouddownload.co.uk/ have now, didn't work for me heres some instructions https://clouddownload.co.uk/how-to
  12. Bizarre, I advertised a 'no label' copy of this a few weeks ago and now I've got colour copies of both labels, decided to list it again today, low and behold this appears...that really is a coincidence. I won't list mine til you're done with yours Neil.
  13. You can't download them on mixcloud I'm afraid Ted, well you can but you have to be very internet savvy to do so, I don't know how to do it. It's a free site so they just let you publish them but not download them. You can of course get something like FREECORDER which will record the lot for you but in real time. Someone might know how to do the download thing, I was told how once.

This era became known as 'post-punk' and some of the greatest music ever sprang from this short but incredibly creative period. I bought all of these records when they were originally released, the majority are singles but there are a couple of lp tracks (Siouxsie & The Banshees, B52's) and I think the Tubeway Army track was a 12" b side as well as an LP track. The Jam's opener is the long version from the LP also. I've used the 'newspaper' sleeve from Public Image's first single to accompany this podcast as I think, of all the truly great singles released in that 3 year period, this is probably the greatest track from the entire era. If anyone likes this, I've got endless amounts of 45's from this period.
  15. You're right, it's an Inferno release, think one side is the usual and one side a remix, BILBO refers to the guy who mastered it at the cutting stage.

  17. Yeah that one I wrote about Black Music and the history of the scene mentions that kind of stuff quite heavily, I scanned it from an old fanzine that I wrote it for and the software changed some of the spellings so if it looks like I wrote some odd words, I didn't really LOL https://www.rare-soul.com/wordpress/about/the-northern-soul-explosion/ get a cup of coffee though, it's about 15 pages long
  18. I remember the day I first sw these records, it was in an a5 catalogue from Russ's records, they were splashed all over the front page and definitely sold as originals. Elsewhere in the catalogue were copies of the Natural Four - I thought you were mine - Boola Boola, that was £5 and nobody wanted that version. Anyway I got the list on the day I was sitting an exam and took it into the hall with me, I was so excited about it that I ignored the exam and just read the list, it soon got confiscated and I got something like grade D cse maths for not doing the exam p.s. Ady I've not forgot that thing, it's in here ready to go
  19. Took an hour but someone got it
  20. All that batch from 76 came from the same source, organised by SS, pressed by a famous bootlegger and sold via Russ Winstanley's sales list to begin with. Mel Britt, Salvadors, Johnny Vanelli, George Blackwell, kenny Smith, Flirtations and so on.
  21. Maybe they put an N in instead of a T then?

  23. It's supposed to be a mis-spelling of TWIN isn't it?
  24. Can't really remember much now but it was in Noddy Holder's autobiography, back in 67 when they were still the N'Betweens, their manager booked them for some overseas dates including one in the Bahamas apparently, which they enjoyed mainly because they found they were sharing accomodation and the stage with a group called The Twans. At the time they (Slade) played beat/motown type stuff.
