  1. Agree about Otis Redding, always rated that one and it isn't that well known. Several decent things on Beacon, apart from the obvious, always liked the Bobby Bridger, and there's a decent inst by the Zenith band. I also love the super double sider on Planet by Perpetual Langley, Surrender and Two By Two. King definitely qualifies, again two or three obvious ones but some great lesser knowns like June Adams, Hortsense Ellis and the very mysterious "Heather" of which I asked about a few months ago and nobody replied...
  2. Totally agree Richard, the Young Folk record has been one of my favourites for over 20 years and it really doesn't sound out of place in the company of these £1000 plus records, utter genius. This is one of the best podcasts I've done this year, there'll be a downloadable version up very soon. That Robert Plant record - f*cking hell what a stormer, shame I bought a counterfeit of it!
  3. I gave up trying to think of an original title for this one. Forty brilliant tracks this time folks, only a handful of these have previously appeared on my podcasts (Joanie Sommers and the Yum Yums crop up frequently -Yum Yums is my all time favourite Northern sound). A couple are requests (I wouldn't have chosen the Del Larks for a start!), a couple are things I think more people should hear (Robert Plant's incredible UK stormer for instance), some are things I'd forgotten how brilliant they were (Imperial C's, Voices, Ruby etc) and there's enough super-rarities to keep everyone happy here I think, along with a smattering of oldies and even a couple of cheapies. https://www.mixcloud....ink-of-a-title/ downloadable version https://podcast9122525417.podomatic.com/entry/2012-05-20T13_09_39-07_00 THE PERSIANETTES - IT HAPPENS EVERYDAY - OR LITTLE NICKY SOUL - I WANTED TO TELL YOU - SHEE ROSALIND MADISON - NEIGHBOURHOOD GIRL - LIBERTY THE IMPERIAL C'S - SOMEONE TELL HER - PHIL LA OF SOUL RUBY - DECEIVED - GOLD TOKEN VITO & THE SALUTATIONS - I BEST BE GOING - SANDBAG MR. 4. She's not Big Maybelle but I have a lovely version of Oh Lord What Are You Doing To Me on a French EP, I think it may have been an LP track elsewhere - sadly can't find a link to it
  5. Rob I ended up with that acetate, funny thing was, I thought it might have come from you because I got a few old emidiscs from John & Malc's shop and a couple were definitely yours from the Sammies days. After I said I'd got it, someone on here asked me to sell it, I didn't want to sell it but in the end I think I actually gave it to them for nothing! If you want a recording of it, it's on a couple of my podcasts. Cheers for Same Old Thing, I'd included it but forgot to list it.
  6. Yum Yums is my all time favourite Northern Soul record.
  7. See, told you nobody liked it in the "records nobody likes" thread
  8. You're right - and I've got that - thanks!
  9. No, Performers is on other side of I'm Satsified, I've got the vocal of Anyway You Want, is there an inst? Let Me Do It is on the other side of the vocal
  10. I know Steve but I wasn't prepared to use such a daft title :-)
  11. I've been making a compilation of Mirwood instrumentals and wondered if anyone can think of anything I've missed, these include official releases and semi-official releases if thats what they are. This is what I've got TEMPTATION WALK OH MY DARLIN SHOTGUN AND THE DUCK PERSONALITY THEME DON'T PRETEND (PRETENTION) DON'T PRETEND (ORIGINAL WITHOUT STRING OVERDUBS) MY LITTLE GIRL TRY A LITTLE HARDER SUPERDANCE HE'S ALRIGHT WITH ME MINE EXCLUSIVELY CIGARETTE ASHES I'M SATISFIED WITH YOU remember - it's just the instrumentals I need not the vocals - thanks
  12. Nice one, thanks Sebastian. I had a picture sleeve for "Maria" and it actually credited them as Tom & Mick (Maniacs). I really like the track as well.

The DJ for the first track is Alan Rhodes. His handover to John Vincent at 18:20 on the recording is one of the greatest, most thrilling bits of DJing many of us had ever heard at the time. And still is to this day. I also like this tape as it picks up chat between my old mate John and his pal Cheesy ("Larry Santos aye it?""Nah mate, different version...it's a wank version that is"). Turn it up loud. I posted this up years ago but it's not currently available as one of my podcasts.
  14. Marmite Russ. I can't stand her voice and I hate this record. Love Vicki Sue Robinson though.
  15. Correct. I've got this suspicion that they were also the group "State of Micky & Tommy" on Mercury who have two collectable psych singles.

  17. It's not bad but it's not as good as Cupid's Inspiration. There's a great German picture sleeve of this featuring the only photo I've ever seen of her. I've had a few records on Olga, remember a rare Shocking Blue 45 (Send Me A Postcard) and I've got a good pop stomper by the glamourously named Tom & Mick.
  18. Well there are no white demos of it, so thats a start - only demos of the other side. The boot is really thick vinyl. Haven't got one, but no doubt the run off info is all wrong. Sorry can't help much.
  19. Had three or four of those, used to be a standard £25, would have thought £40 now. Rare, but not a great demand. It's a different version to the American release as well.
  20. Also on Major Minor, Coloured Raisins, Isabel Bond, Karen Young (one stomper), Isley Brothers, Cissy Houston. Smudger - I've got nothing on a group called The Blackbirds, sorry, apart from a single and album on the budget label Saga.
  21. SNB - mentioned it above. Stands for Simon Napier Bell, managed Marc Bolan, Wham...the record you're thinking of is probably Flamma Sherman
  22. n.b. they aren't mine, someone just rang me and said see if anyone wants them if they were mine I'd have been asking £20 apiece
  23. This was the blurb on John's site. Why would anyone pay that much for an issue of Blues & Soul? Well whatever, if you can't beat them, join them, I have two copies of the same edition available, one excellent, one excellent minus with a small tear on the cover, £100 and £75 respectively. Also other early numbers if you know what issues you are looking for. Blues And Soul Blues & Soul # 17 March 1969 One of the really elusive first 20. Front cover is Otis Redding not for the first time featured with a horse. This 1969 issue highlights for the Soul Historian the level of demand for re-issuing Soul rarities due to DJ generated demand. May alone saw near 20 45s. inc: Astors - Candy, Spellbinders - Help Me, Rex Garvin - JB, Darrell Banks - Open The Door To Your Heart etc. 1969 was truly the peak for British Soul fans - and all-night-club attendance John Abbey & Peter Trickey review new releases inc: Z. Z. Hill's UK only "Make Me yours" etc Artist pics & articles on: Joe Tex, Junior Walker & the All Stars. Curtis Mayfield, Ben E. King. Live concert review + pic of Billy Stewart @ Royal Tottenham 24 January 1969. Artist pictures of the Van Dykes, Esquires, Johnniie Taylor, Jean Stanback, Theresa Lindsey, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Temptations, center page spread of Stevie Wonder, Joe Stubbs .. On top of all that info are the 1968 readers poll results for all categories. Out of all the early Blues & Soul I consider this the most interesting &informative, as always a wonder column from Dave Godin of course! Perhaps more inciting are the Record company adverts shimmering with retro images and design. Action, Island, Atlantic, Deep Soul, Chess & Tamla Motown all have eye-catching ads that are pure-pop-art! Sorry, this item has already been won! The winning bid was £ 154.00
  24. It does if you're familiar with record centres! The first Carnival label only released UK recorded product and was based in Dean Street, London, it ceased trading in 1965. The second one started up in 1966, released two records by The Manhattans, then disappeared. It was definitely pressed up at the same factory that did Philips, Fontana, Polydor, Ska Beat...but general consensus (i.e. Tony Rounce, and me) thinks it was run by R & B Records of Stamford Hill. So yes, possibly a reggae connection but definitely not to the first Carnival label.
