  1. Russ - I guess all this is down to how people perceive it - this one I would have just classed as straight Northern Soul.
  2. GBP, he lives up North
  3. So if you went to see a heavy metal concert and they played a country and western set that would be alright would it?
  4. Nev if ever I was running a venue I'd like to hear something a bit different as well, but it's my experience that most people are very set in what they want to hear when they go out, God help us we've all been there, I was once asked to play some Motown so I played a few decent things like The VIP's, Midnight Johnny, two or three like that, and the girl who asked in the first place said no not that stuff, haven't you got Jimmy Mack (Martha & vandellas)...
  5. What, Tony Rounce didn't know it? I'm truly stunned.
  6. What, Pretty Girl? (Sorry Dave is unavailable) Yeah it's a decent dancer same style as Do You Love Me Again, I'm amazed more people don't know it.
  7. Indeed: from an article I wrote back in 1988, it's referring to June 1974 New releases this month included Jimmy Conwell-Cigarette Ashes, Contours-Do You Love Me and Frankie & The Classicals-What Shall I Do on a new label called Pye Disco Demand. Over in the States, completely unnoticed in the Hot Stuff section of Black Music Magazine was a new release on GSF by the Anderson Brothers entitled I Can See Him Loving You. Twelve months later it was big everywhere, impossible to find, and remains a classic today.
  8. Ask your punters not me. You don't need to ask me what I like, you know what I like. Traditional 60's Northern Soul and Cleethorpes type uptempo 70's. But if you honestly believe that everyone who goes to one of your venues is as open minded as you about what constitutes NS, try playing half an hour of records with "jazz undertones" and see what the reaction is. If you're trying to invent some kind of new anything fits type soul scene then thats fine, but you'll also then lose half the customers..
  9. Dunno but it's know to all UK collectors - also the lead track on the French EP which includes the alternate version of I Feel So Bad
  10. But would you not say that 90% of people who pay to get into a night advertised as "Northern Soul" would expect to hear "Northern Soul" and not jazz or any other such 'music'?
  11. THis is correct, except for the shite bit.
  12. In that case, I'm wrong, sorry!
  13. Don't think a stock copy has ever been found
  14. I also bought that £8 "original" in 1976 (and an Idle Few very similar), that one was on thick vinyl and had a dip just before the centre. Then they did it as a demo on styrene, it's got a delta number which has been scratched out, it's got PB scratched out, and then has the number scratched in. Sorry if anyone above said the same. I don't know about the GSF repress though.
  15. I don't know if you're talking about me or not but if you are you need to check the facts of this particular part of your statement frequently sells illegal carvers I sold three that I got in a collection the other day, any others I've sold you can count on one hand. I don't sell any recent or new bootlegs, only "old school" pressings and boots from the 70's which everyone sells.

  17. John I've come to the conclusion that there are push out and solid centre versions of every Island and Island related 45. Yesterday when I sold Come On Home it was a push out, yet Mick's was a solid. I'm buying red and whites again and some are the opposite to what I had before. That "Pretty Girl" is a nice track, similar to his other stuff. He had one on Fontana as well around the same time (Sea Cruise?)
  18. One of my favourites is The Gaturs - Yeah You're Right, You KNow You're Right, that's got a bit of wah wah in it if I remember correctly.
  19. Argie & The Arketts - You're The Guy - absolutely stunning 45, had a few copies, one day I'll keep one..
  20. I think it's Northern
  21. He'll get this one, sent it out of my mailing list account
  22. Oh sorry Mick thought you were just adding it LOL
  23. Actually I'll keep out of this, I like many of the funky type things that I've heard but I wouldn't want to hear them at avenue, that's all I have to say really, same as I wouldn't want to hear tons of hardcore late 50's r&b.
  24. Those three are stupendous Northern Soul records though, funky or not - the example on Tayster above is not.
