  1. Dunno but nobody's played that out for 30 years...forgotten oldie
  2. Steve first of all, I am not in any freemasonry brotherhood, do you think they would have ME? I can't keep my mouth shut about anything. If I knew the details I'd post them up. I only know about this one because I was lucky enough to be given one, and as I say, I thought yes thats nice, thats mine, I'll keep it. Never mentioned it to anyone. Now I can tell you for certain there is no counterfeit of General Assembly. You are thinking of the wrong record. I know which one you are thinking of so I'll wait for you to remember. John Wesley - no idea. I have only seen this one record, The Magnetics. I have one copy, my own. I think I have an idea where they came from but I can't go out and say it in case I am wrong and I'll get in trouble but they are 100% "imports".
  3. As said above, that was the first boot, the second was purple I think, it may well be the most booted record of all time, red ones, white ones, black ones etc
  4. The definitions of what constitutes a bootleg are a bit blurred, yes it is probably a very clever counterfeit, but no copies are for sale anywhere, the copy above was given away, therefore nobody is being ripped off. If they were carvers nobody would blink, from what I can deduce they are a vanity project with a miniscule amount of copies made - I've got one and I'm highly delighted with it - it's the Rolls Royce of pressings. I paid sod all for it and don't consider myself to have been ripped off. It won't be on a public record deck so it's not hurting anyone. You investigative chaps need to focus your attentions abroad and into the murky depths of the past. Seek and you may find answers. Look to the East perhaps? p.s. at no time have I attempted to sell it as an original! Or even felt the need to tell anyone I've got it.
  5. Sorry I know this isn't any of my business but who has been done here? Nobody has been sold a counterfeit Magnetics as an original. In fact I don't think these have even circulated but for about 3 or 4 copies. That's all.
  6. I can even remember what gear I had that night Steve. I can remember being sick soon as I got off the coach back home, remember sitting out in the field waiting for the eyes to go back to normal...some nights you remember, some you don't, there's a hundred that I've forgotten about but it's usually the ones I recorded that I remember, mainly cos you can hear me and friends talking on them
  7. 9. Hello and welcome to this years Christmas podcast, the idea was I’d grab whatever records I could find going back to 1955 and then play through the years until we reached, well, at least the 90’s, but my plans were foiled whenever after completing the recording, when I saved it to disc, the last hour didn’t come out! So it’s missed things like Madness, Inner City, Nitro Deluxe, House Of Pain, Blur, Prodigy and some jungle, plus my all time favourite record of any genre, I Saw The Light by Todd Rundgren. But the rest is pretty good (except for The Spirals’ Rockin’ Cow which is rubbish, not sure what I was thinking there) and I hope it’ll be an enjoyable 3 hours of background music while you prepare the turkey. There’s Rock n Roll, 60’s, Ska & Soul sections, Glam Rock, a bit of Punk and Power Pop…Great recording quality too, hoorah! 12. WIGAN CASINO 4TH ANNIVERSARY – THE COMPLETE TAPE This is my Christmas present to everyone who has listened to any of my podcasts over the last year, anyone who’s favourite them, recommended them and taken the trouble to comment on them. You are going to love this, I hope. Previously I only posted the last 30 minutes of this tape because my original C120 had been nicked by someone I lent it to, but last year I met an old mate who had made copies of lots of my tapes 30 years ago and I was able to get back the missing two hours. So here is a real treat for you, the final 2 hours 20 minutes of the Wigan casino 4th Anniversary on 24th September 1977. I recorded this from the back of the room on a portable tape recorder. The first hour or so is fairly low fi, it improves dramatically in the middle and the last 30 minutes are great quality. So theirs is nearly all of Alan Rhodes’ set, all of Pep’s set (beginning with Lou Ragland), all of Martyn Ellis’ oldies set, and Russ’s last 20 minutes or so which features a spine-tingling “Three Before Eight” with truly epic clapping. There is no track listing for this sorry, have a listen and be surprised at what was actually played! All the best to everyone for Christmas and the New Year, and please keep listening and buying records off me…cheers…Pete https://www.mixcloud.com/mayfairmenthol/wigan-casino-4th-anniversary-the-full-tape-for-the-first-time/

  15. Can't believe I didn't mention Venecia Wilson - ok so the backing track is a cut up of an original but he made it even better. I also really liked the original version of He's So Irreplaceable by Doris Jones that circulated on acetate - not on the Tomorrow label - I asked about this and Ian said it was lost forever.

  20. So here it is then, my top 20 of the 300 Greatest Northern Soul Oldies of all time…I know what you’re going to say…BORING…well that’s as maybe but the rest was bloody good though wasn’t it? The top 2 are the same as when I last did this, in 2009. I have put the number that the record made in the last chart in brackets so you can see what, if any, movement there has been. Anyway it’s been fun and got loads of listens, thanks for all the great compliments and remember, it was meant to be Northern Soul OLDIES not cutting edge newies. If you can’t see the track listing there should be a button near the top of the page saying “show track list”.
