  1. No problem mate, probably a good thing to get them all out there, I'm amazed I've managed to hang on to them all these years when everything else has gone either lost sold or nicked!
  2. As promised
  3. I posted up side one of this tape about 18 months ago, by popular demand here is side two, the sound quality is superb for a Wigan tape, I recorded it from the stage, stuck the cassette recorder on top of the big speaker while I sat on the stage and danced in front of the stage (never believe that bollocks that only the worlds greatest dancers did their stuff at the front!). Anyway the majority of this tape is Richard Searling, his ending record by John Gary is probably the only track out of place on here as it disappeared without a trace soon after. Keith Minshull is the DJ for the last few tracks. https://www.mixcloud.com/mayfairmenthol/wigan-casino-15-10-77-part-2/ TONY MIDDLETON — PARIS BLUES RINGLEADERS — BABY WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO OUR LOVE SAM WILLIAMS — LOVE SLIPPED THROUGH MY FINGERS ROBBY LAWSON — BURNING SENSATION TAJ MAHAL — A LOT OF LOVE JOEY HEATHERTON — WHEN YOU CALL ME BABY JAY D MARTIN — BY YOURSELF HARLEY HATCHER — SOUL HUSTLER BOBBY GOLDSBORO — TOO MANY PEOPLE PAT POWDRILL — DO IT CHAPTER FIVE — YOU CAN’T MEAN IT MIKE McDONALD — GOD KNOWS LYDIA MARCELLE — IT’S NOT LIKE YOU LILLIE BRYANT — MEET ME HALFWAY PAUL SINDAB — DO WHAT YOU WANNA DO JOHN GARY — HANG ON TO ME JACKIE TRENT — YOU BABY EDDIE REGAN — PLAYIN’ HIDE AND SEEK
  4. I've now done the other side of that tape, I'll bung it up on mixcloud
  5. I thought I'd get some more of my old Wigan tapes digitalised so I'll post a few up here, this one was recorded on the night Archie Bell & The Drells played The Casino, towards the end of the tape you can hear Richard Searling getting more and more angry as the roadies setting up the band's equipment on stage keep making his records jump. The tape was recorded from a table at the back of the main room on a Philips mono cassette recorder with built on mike so it's a case of atmosphere over sound quality for this one, but that's how I like them anyway, it really captures the excitement of a night when Wigan was packed out. It's also a little quiet in parts. Jeez this was years ago! https://www.mixcloud.com/mayfairmenthol/wigan-casino-18-6-77/ Cool Off Detroit Executives Turnin' My Heartbeat Up Mvp's I Belong To You Milton Wright I Cant See Him Again The Twans Crying My Heart Out The Newbeats Kiss Me Now Florence Devore Ever Again Bernie Williams Philly Dog Around The World Jimmie Raye Whose Little Girl Are You Danny Williams I'll Always Need You Len Barry I Hear A Symphony Carmel Strings Save My Love For A Rainy Day The Van Dykes Here I Go Again Archie Bell & The Drells Lend A Hand Bobby Hutton I Go To Pieces Gerri Granger I'm Gonna Change Four Seasons By Yourself Jay D Martin When You Call Me Ba Joey Heatherton The Ice-Man Billy Watkins If He Were Mine Paula Durante I'm Gone Eddie Parker Interplay Derek & Ray
  6. No problems at all mate as long as the source is credited
  7. Think it was 78...
  8. Did you recognise what the 5 seconds of record right at the very very start was Grant? Prince & Princess... anyway I'm recording side 2 as I write this, I'll get it posted up, track list.. TONY MIDDLETON RINGLEADERS SAM WILLIAMS ROBBY LAWSON TAJ MAHAL JOEY HEATHERTON JAY D MARTIN HARLEY HATCHER BOBBY GOLDSBORO PAT POWDRILL CHAPTER FIVE MIKE McDONALD LYDIA MARCELLE LILLIE BRYANT PAUL SINDAB (strange choice, booted a year earlier) JOHN GARY JACKIE TRENT EDDIE REGAN LEN BARRY PATRICE HOLLOWAY PAULA PARFITT never heard Richard or anyone else play John Gary again...he ends with that and KMinshull takes over
  9. Yes but he's got no proof that the stock of the Awake 45's were destroyed, because they obviously weren't...it's a well known story about the Gwen Owens record though.
  10. https://www.mixcloud.com/mayfairmenthol/wigan-casino-4th-anniversary-24977/ this is the last 30 minutes of the 4th Anniversary at Wigan casino, 24th September 1977. I taped this from the back left of the room. It's notable for featuring the late Martyn Ellis doing one of his rare Wigan spots, he's the first DJ on, followed by Russ Winstanley ending the night with an awesome, atmospheric 3 Before 8 (well 4 before 8 if you include Gerri Granger). Sound quality is as you would expect from a cheap cassette deck but if you love the Wigan atmosphere you'll enjoy this. All the best, Pete p.s. if people want to use my podcasts, especially the Wigan ones, you are free to do so, but for f*cks sake at least credit where you got it from, they're all over youtube now with people claiming they recorded them!

  11. I have, but I think they have been up before - I'll see what I've got left on mixcloud and repost them if you like Of course I also have side 2 of this tape which I never posted up
  12. I'm not on about the tape Rob, I was just saying what some of my favourite records of that period were
  13. Never heard of it so probably not Casino - then again, I obviously don't know every record played there.
  14. Two more topics on the same subject
  15. No this was a great year, it was 78 when it went downhill - in my opinion anyway - the quality if stuff played in 76-77 was amazing, most of my favourites are from that period I think, things like Bernie Williams, Lillie Bryant, Kenny Smith, Lou Ragland, Tony Middelton, Pookie Hudson, Herbert Hunter and so on and so on
  16. Wasn't sure if I posted this live tape before or not but the discussion about Eddie Parker - I"m Gone, when it was played etc, it's on this tape at 30 minutes approximately. This tape is fantastic quality, though I prefer them with a bit more atmosphere. Me and Mr C were the only people from Wolverhampton who went this night and it was quite empty so we sat on the stage and I recorded this by putting the recorder on top of one of the speakers. https://www.mixcloud.com/mayfairmenthol/wigan-casino-live-15-10-1977-northern-soul/
  17. Jim he must have been playing it as a 'rare oldie' at that time because it was played in mid-77, booted and dropped - it's on the Wigan tape I recorded at the time (15/10/77) https://www.mixcloud.com/mayfairmenthol/wigan-casino-live-15-10-1977-northern-soul/

  19. First heard a rumour of it maybe 10 years ago - never seen or heard it
  20. That's the man Dave.
  21. What a ridiculous statement. People are blinkered because they don't like all aspects of soul music? It's called having personal taste.
  22. Dave is that for real, I thought it was just a rumour - Kept On Dancing I mean - has anyone actually heard it?
  23. Was never a major record when it was first played, only had a brief few weeks before it was bootlegged. I mean, people liked it, but there was no stampede to the dancefloor if you know what I mean. Only Richard Searling had a copy I think. At Wigan, I mean. I remember someone I used to swap tapes with telling me he bought it at The Torch for £1 on the back of Love You Baby being popular.
  24. So do I. For the last time. It's not a playlist of records that I don't like. And because nobody seems to have read the original intro or understand the concept, I am going to have a hissy fit, spit the dummy out and close the topic
  25. Used to really like this when it was played as a new release, I think it was among the first 12" ever to be played. It's on one of the earliest remaining Wigan tapes that I recorded myself and they played the whole 7 or so minutes of it.
