  1. I think it does in some circumstances. I was in the co-op yesterday and from nowhere, Road Runner by Jr Walker blasted out on the Co-Op radio, a record I've heard a million times but it sounded utterly fantastic in that setting, an unexpected slice of classic Motown while on a cider buying mission, perfect...
  2. I'm not sure if that's all the boots
  3. No, never even knew about it
  4. Did anyone catch that book by Garry Bushell that came out last year, Time For Action - The Mod Revival 1978-1981? To be honest I only bought it because I know in 2 or 3 years time it'll be worth something but I read it and thought it was great, reprints all the original articles and adverts from Sound magazine for a start, great stuff.
  5. I think it was "You left the water running", I'm sure it was...
  6. After hearing part one yesterday, some people asked how we managed to be on the ball as far as sounds went when we just a village youth club (albeit the biggest village in England with a 12,000 or so population back then). Well I missed the Catacombs because I was just entering onto the Northern scene just as it closed - plus I was only 14. In Willenhall (Wolverhampton), there was a youth club called St. Giles (aka Sammies) and from 74 or maybe 75 to 77 they held superb allnighters there, my parents actually let me go, aged 15, and this place had top DJ's like Pep and Max, who had all the big sounds. So we heard them there and then went about getting them for our own youth club. And of course older members had started going to Wigan, hearing new sounds and getting them cut, we soon followed in their footsteps. Anyway, here's another hour and a half of great memories. I may do one more of these. 8. If I was selling it in ex to mint £50 - £60. Probably £40 at that grade.
  9. Well I missed the Catacombs because as it shut, I was getting into NS but still only 14. In Willenhall, there was a youth club called St Giles aka Sammies and from 74 or maybe 75 to 77 they held allnighters there, my parents actually let me go, aged 15, and this place had real top dj's like Pep and Max, who had all the big sounds. So we heard them there and then went about getting them for our own youth club. Agent Smith off here was a dj there as well, great memories of that place.
  10. Candi Staton, absolutely, I will do a 3rd set and use that, I actually did a 70's soul podcast but never broadcast it, when I say 70's soul I mean mainly mainstream things that charted, New York City, Main Ingredient, Ann Peebles etc, remember back then it seemed like a fantastic record was released every single week? Cameo, yep that was massive wasn't it, even things like "Low Rider" I nearly used...I didn't want these to be just out and out Northern

  12. I've already started doing that, instead I've gone for thicker mailers, still with 3 pieces of card, or cruciform mailers, though I can't get those cheap enough. Am putting my registereds as above, and then inside a jiffy bag mailer.
  13. Great track that - I actually have the original studio acetate of it - but I think it's the same cut

  15. WHEN I WAS GROWING UP IN THE 70's, OUR LOCAL YOUTH CLUB WAS ABSOLUTELY CRUCIAL IN INTRODUCING ME TO THE MUSIC I ENDED UP LOVING FOR MY ENTIRE LIFE. I ACTUALLY LOVED REGGAE BUT THE TUESDAY NIGHT DISCOS WERE THE FIRST PLACE I HEARD RECORDS LIKE 'THE HORSE', BROOKS & JERRY, "TRAMPOLINE" ALONGSIDE THE THEN CURRENT DISCO RELEASES. I FIRST ATTENDED AS A FRESH FACED 12 YEAR OLD IN 1972 AND BY 1976 WAS ACTUALLY SUPPLYING A LOT OF THE NORTHERN RECORDS THAT WERE PLAYED. OUR YOUTH CLUB EVEN HELD A COUPLE OF ALL NIGHTERS, AND WE HAD MANY OF THE DAY'S TOP SOUNDS. THIS PODCAST AND IT'S UPCOMING PART 2 CELEBRATE RECORDS THAT WE ALL DANCED TO BACK IN THE EARLY 70's. I WOULD SAY THAT "THE CHAMPION" WAS POSSIBLY THE BIGGEST RECORD EVER AT OUR YOUTH CLUB BUT THIS ISN'T JUST A NORTHERN SOUL COMPILATION, THERE ARE ALSO SOME OF THE MOST MEMORABLE COMMERCIAL SOUL TRACKS THAT I REMEMBER FROM THE TIME AS WELL. IT WAS A TRULY BRILLIANT TIME FOR MUSIC BACK THEN - SOUL MUSIC ANYWAY - AND THE MUSIC ON THESE TWO PODCASTS IS NOTHING SHORT OF GLORIOUS. DEDICATED TO WOMBOURNE YOUTH CLUB, IT'S STAFF AND OUR DJ HERO, TIM NIGHTINGALE. 16. Seeing someone selling a copy of the record in question, Otis Redding on Stone, topday, I thought it would be interesting to go back to this topic which was originally about one seller advertising a copy every week for about 4 years but turned into a great thread about the actual recording of the song and Tony's trawls through the tape vaults....which have now actually been released on Ace kent records.
  17. Looks great!
  18. Mate it came to me in a dream, that parrot that said "Pi-per" and I can't have thought of this show for 30 years at least...I'll change it I think, he's a bit creepy. Good memories of school holidays in the 60's though..
  19. Is the acetate of Magic Carpet Ride?
  20. That's nothing. I once gave someone a load of records, absolutely free, and he complained that I hadn't cleaned them properly for him...
  21. Had loads but chucked them. I love those.
  22. Means about as much as prices paid in weekly auctions. You're no dummy Kev, you know what things are worth, and no way on earth is that record worth £300. And if Joe's willing to pay £275 it's pretty obvious he's got a desperate customer offering £100 on top of that.
  23. Yes it's nice but he said are there any other good ones on Fontana
  24. That's not on Fontana though...
  25. Way too much, £200 is too much, £150 is sensible, £175 more likely - anyone paying more than £200 is mental basically. I base this on selling 4 copies in the last 3 years. She had some great 45's out on Fontana, they're all available on a cd (probably called The Fontana years)
