  1. Took me weeks to sell it cheaper than that!
  2. I have a feeling The Torch already had The Sherrys.
  3. I'm not going to slag anyone off for wearing anything at any time. I'm just surprised to see the return of this particular style, that's all. Doesn't hurt anyone..
  4. They were. Fantastic at the time and the singles are still great but the lyrics are just appalling.
  5. People usually call me Steve for some reason but not often Paul
  6. So they were telling the truth about the baggies then!
  7. Yes it is Harry, it had a picture sleeve, I knew it was that but couldn't think of the artist or title!
  8. When you're a kid and you hear lyrics, they tend to stick with you forever, whether they are right or wrong, I must have 20 or 30 favourites on which I know I'm singing the wrong words, I remember a T Rex track called Raw Ramp which was the B side of Get It On, I was amazed to discover he was singing "You think you're a champ but girl you ain't nothing but a raw ramp", I thought he was singing "You fill your champer cup you ain't nothing but a raw ramp", it doesn't matter that there's no such thing as a "champer cup", thats what I thought it was. Honky Tonk Women, I thought the first line was "I met her jean so far aquaine in Memphis", again, made up words, I think I was about 28 when I realised he was singing "I met a gin soaked bar room queen in Memphis"
  9. I was going to post this tape up but I've decided not to as it's riddled with some of the worst music I've ever heard played at Wigan, someone earlier was saying how dreadful Leon Young Strings "Glad all over", a 1973 play, was - and he was right - but it's surely nowhere near as bad as Larry Houston "Lets spend some time together". In my opinion. Anyway nearly every track on here is covered up, I know most of them but some of the modern ones I've no idea. Also on this tape, the Casino sounds as if there are about 12 people in there. It's really, really sad. 10. I was going to put up an uncirculated Wigan tape from late 79 early 80, I'll pin it down later, just editing it and so far I've had to cut out over 30 minutes of absolute disco dross being played by Richard, sounds like one 12" after another, imagine being there having to listen to that. I'll try and salvage the rest, I just heard John & The Weirdest so there is some salvation.
  11. Just noticed, if you listen to the DJ immediately before "Easy Baby" comes in, it's Not Russ and it's not Martyn Ellis and it's not Richard!
  12. Got to stop you there Mr.J, Arthur Conley actually says "Y'all" not "Yo"! Sorry, I ruined page 1, enjoyed the rest though
  13. I thought it was at first then something, maybe the lyrics, made me think it was a girl...or the B side maybe
  14. Steve, I think Rhino was the second record ever played on the first night at Wigan!
  15. There's some fantastic clapping on Get It Baby, Saxie Russell and Rhino, it really does give you goosepimples. Whatever happened to clapping, died out in the 80's, I loved it when everyone knew how to do that clap on a particular beat as if it were done by telepathy.
  16. NEXT 10 - ANY INTEREST PLEASE PM POST IS £2.40 RECORDED OVERSEAS £3.50 EUROPE, £4.50 EVERYWHERE ELSE CHEERS PETE pete.smith@freeuk.com MERLE SPEARS & THE TREATS - I WANT TO KNOW - ATLANTIC DEMO EX+ £50 Big record a few years back, uptempo R & B influenced dancer, this is a superb copy. JOHNNY NASH - WHAT KIND OF LOVE IS THIS / DEEP IN THE HEART OF HARLEM - GROOVE EX- £50 Gets a minus grade for a couple of non-sounding marks, both sides play EX+, cracking uptempo dancer "What Kind Of Love" plus a bonus B side, the Jimmy Radcliffe penned beat ballad "Deep In The Heart Of Harlem". Great double sider at a good price. BROOKS ODELL - STANDING TALL / THE LIVELY ONES - COLUMBIA DEMO VG++ £40 Both sides have some surface and the occasional pop (once I think on "Lively Ones") but they both play great and this is a half price double sider. Radio Station stamp on the label. THE PACETTES - DON'T READ THE LETTER - REGINA EX £15 Nice girl group tune fromApril '64 THE PLATTERS '65 - RUN WHILE IT'S DARK - ENTREE EX £10 Latin-tinged dancer THE PEPPERS - LITTLE PIECE OF PAPER - PRESS DEMO EX £20 SOLD Really deep voiced girl singer (like Big Maybelle) and connection to the above as it was produced by Buck Ram (Real name Sam Ram - honestly). It's an R & B meets Doo Wop dancer. THE PARLIAMENTS - A NEW DAY BEGINS - ATCO EX £15 Maybe the last time you hear the classic Parliaments 60's sound. Le Baron production. THE PERSIANS - GET A HOLD OF YOURSELF - PAGEANT DEMO VG+ £20 Lots of marks but plays with practically no problems at all. This is the original, midtempo version of the Little Rose Little number and it's beautiful. B side "Steady Kind" also excellent. Rare on this white demo, has two black stersisks and number on label. THE PASSIONETTS - MY FAULT - PATH EX £25 SOLD This really is one of my favourite discoveries of the 80's, uptempo girl group heaven. Has a few surface marks but plays practically mint, small TOL. Bargain! THE PERSIANETTES - CALL ON ME / IT HAPPENS EVERY DAY - OR (OPEN) EX £35 Crazy double sider, both sides tremendous girl group dancers, it's probably forgotten by most that this was actually bootlegged on OOTP but never really distributed.
  17. Someone put up a wants for "Detroit Shakers - Help Me Find My Way" today, it reminded me of something that happened to me in my earliest days on the scene and something I'm still embarassed about today. As we know, Detroit Shakers was actually Lonely Man by The Outsiders, it was covered up and bootlegged as The Detroit Shakers. I loved this record and when it was booted, I bought a copy as soon as they arrived at Ruby Red records. It was on the Counsel label and apart from the false title and artist, they also put a false producers name, and on the label it said RICHARD P-PCORN WYLIE (thats what it said) I thought this was a weird name, anyway as time went on I forgot all about this until one day maybe 6 months later, we were having a discussion about records and this guy mentioned a record called Rosemary What Happened and said it was by RICHARD POPCORN WYLIE, to which I immediately challenged him and said "It's not POPCORN, it's PPCORN (Pee Pee Corn)" I was never allowed to forget this.

  18. Oh well, it doesn't really matter, it's still the earliest tape that I know of.
  19. Tommy Bush - I Don't LIke It give me ten minutes and I could tell you tons of records Russ played first, from Love Music to Ten To One
  20. I have that LP here and am playing it now and can confirm it is an instrumental version of The Detroit Emeralds song You Want It You Got It so I think I should get a prize for guessing the title seeing as I haven't heard that Detroit Emeralds record since 1973!
  21. I'd agree with that price, though the weird thing is, as far as I know these never circulated when Milton Wright was being played, in fact I didn't see one until the 80's and my first thought was that it had been done after the Grapevine single was deleted.
  22. In which case you were of course right..
  23. I thought you said each!
