PETE SMITH pete.smith@freeuk.com 20 DANCERS FOR TUESDAY ELDRIDGE HOLMES - HUMPBACK - JET SET EX 20 Uptempo dancer, new dance craze - don't think The Humpback ever caught on though THE MARVELLOS - DOWN IN THE CITY / IN THE SUNSHINE - MODERN DEMO EX- 25 In The Sunshine is a lovely, typical Van McCoy tune. This side is EX, other side is VG++. THE INTENTIONS - TIME / COOL SUMMER NIGHT - UPTOWN EX 25 Two really nice vocal group sides, both midtempo JIMMY NORMAN - FAMILY TREE - MERCURY EX 75 Storming dancer, Johnny Brantley production. Ballad B side bit crackly at start. BOBBY JONES - BEWARE A STRANGER - USA DEMO VG++ 20 Great lesser known oldie, plays fine, X on label and very small label damage (looks like another label got stuck to it at some point) DOC & THE INTERNS - BABY I KNOW - NOW EX 25 SOLD A proper old style stomper from Hollywood CA JESSE JOHNSON - HOLES IN MY SOUL - OAK EX+ 10 70's dancer LARRY WILLIAMS - THIS OLD HEART (IS SO LONELY) - OKEH DEMO EX+ 60 Super-soulful vocal on this one, with a typical uptempo screamer on the B side, great double sider JERRY JACKSON - GYPSY EYES - KAPP DEMO VG++ 25 Great early 60's Big City Soul, few surface marks but plays great, name on label JOANNE MORGAN - JUST HOW LOUD (MUST THE MUSIC PLAY) - MGM EX 25 Rare black issue copy RUBY JOHNSON - CALLIN' ALL BOYS - V TONE VG+ 25 This one had an evil scratch on the edge which clicked for the first 20 seconds, I've managed to file it down and now it's just a background tick which is slightly annoying but not a disaster. Fair price.. DEON JACKSON - OOH BABY - CARLA EX 15 Classic Detroit floater THE NITE TRAIN - TO THE BITTER END - ROULETTE DEMO EX 20 Same tune as Bobby Hill on LoLo PAUL (GUITAR RED) JOHNSON - PRETTY EYED BABY - CHECKER EX 15 Not the R&B you might expect, more of a popcorn type dancer, very nice BILLY CONN - I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN - FEDERAL EX 40 Nice early soul with uptempo R & B flip THE TOYS - WHAT'S WRONG WITH ME BABY - VIRGO EX 15 SOLD I think this might be the only issue of this track on a 45 JIMMY HOLIDAY - SHIELD ALL ROUND - KT EX 25 Brilliant and underrated lesser known THE GAINORS - TELL HIM - TALLEY HO EX- 25 Early Van McCoy composition, popcorn style dancer, one small non-sounding mark on the vinyl YVONNE GOMEZ - MY MAN A GO GO - HAWAII EX 20 Amazingly this one still books at £100! This copy is a tiny, tiny bit offcentre, I mean really tiny. I wasn't mate, honest, but really...
-
OK. Don't make it any better though
-
I'd tell him where to shove his book and get the info off the net where it costs f*ck all. And he's incorrect, they'd been trading for four or five years before they released a Larry Cunnigham record

PETE SMITH pete.smith@freeuk.com Another handful of decent tunes for sale JAY & THE AMERICANS - LIVIN' ABOVE YOUR HEAD - UNITED ARTISTS EX £20 This is actually tough on a USA issue - and of course, a classic blue eyed dancer RODDIE JOY - WALKIN' BACK - PARKWAY EX 15 This lady can do no wrong for me, this one very similar to her Red Bird releases ALBERT JONES - YOU AND YOUR LOVE - CANDY APPLE EX+ 40 Modern Soul dancer from Choker Campbell's label LINDA JONES - I CAN'T STAND IT - LOMA EX £15 Totally overlooked uptempo Northern dancer WALT JESSUP & THE PRIMETTES - ROLL ON - PUSSY CAT EX £20 Uptemo dancer with great gitl backing. Surely not the same Primettes as "The Supremes" - this is a NY label. WALTER JACKSON - IT WILL BE THE LAST TIME - COLUMBIA DEMO EX- £40 Superb midtempo sound, probably his rarest on Columbia KING SOLOMON - SITTIN' HERE THINKIN' - FRANKLIN PRODUCTIONS EX £20 Sound like a kind of 70's version of early 60's R & B, strange one KENNY BALLARD - MR. MAGIC - KAPP DEMO EX £20 Good Northern from the early days of the Casino BEN E KING - I CAN'T TAKE IT LIKE A MAN - MAXWELL EX £10 Late 60's kind of soulful ballad / crossover THE KELLY BROTHERS - I'VE GOT MY BABY - SIMS EX £15 Good uptempo Southern dancer KAZIA - I SAY PLEASE - MILLAGE EX £50 Kazia is, I think, Tawny Vonn - this was also released as being by Tawny Vonn. It's a sort of Stand By Me type sound. £150 elsewhere. Label has a scratch on it but the vinyl is fine. BATISTE BROADUS - GOT THIS PAIN - CAPA EX- £30 R & B dancer, once tipped to go big... WILLIE HATCHER - HAVE A HEART GIRL - COTILLION DEMO EX £40 Currently being spun by Mr. Levine paypal is pete.smith@freeuk.com 1ST CLASS RECORDED IS NOW £2.40 FOR ONE RECORD WITH NO EXTRA CHARGE FOR 2 ADDITIONAL ITEMS. House Of Pain nicked the intro for Jump Around - that must have sold millions
-
It's very likely, the vinyl is the same quality as Ska Beat from the same period but I can't say for sure.

This is excellent https://www.uncarved.org/blog/2011/08/the-secret-ska-history-of-stamford-hill/

An old thread here with a bit of info

I think I wrote a piece on the label in the late 90's which might be in the archives here. Then again, I might not have. I thought there surname was Izen though. They dealt directly with producers in Jamaica.

Going Rate For These Two Records Please?
Pete S replied to MrsWoodsrules's topic in Look At Your Box
That's too much for a minter let alone a VG one. Loads turned up, blue label issues. I'd say £150 - £175 for a mint one, so £75 for a vg. £100 for Parliaments in vg maybe. -
Richard Searling Wigan Casino 7Th Anniversary Phenomenal
Pete S replied to Pete S's topic in All About the SOUL
Do what you like mate, copy them, give them away, use them on websites, as long as people don't copy them and sell (except me) them I'm happy for them to be distributed. -
I remember this getting maybe 2 plays at Wigan, probably well after Cleethorpes played it, did nothing, booted as you say almost straight away, at the end of the day it's just a mundane Chicago stomper isn't it, B side miles better but still pretty average.

Thanks a lot Steve -
Dave, this might interest you, Dave 'David' Flynn of Japan has an acetate of One In A Million, with the Chapter 5 backing track, but performed by Kenny Bernard! I heard him play it once. They shared a manager back in the 60's.

Bought a record the other day and was charged £3 postage, seller contacted me to apologise for late posting (it took 13 days) I said don't worry about it but you ought to check out your star ratings, he was a new seller with about 25 feedbacks but he had really bad star ratings for postage, I said if you're going to charge £3 postage then you need to use professional mailers and at least two pieces of card. He was just cutting up bits of boxes and taping them together. £3 cannot be justified for something like that. So thats why I tend to moan about it. But the worst - ones who charge £3 then send 1st class standard at 90p.

I think the problem is stating that's it's more soulful than Ray Charles, quite a feat to live up to, pretty good effort though I thought, bit too long?
-
Yes I remember these going down a storm.. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Batch-of-3-7-inch-Single-Parlophone-Records-Northern-Soul-/190876620589?pt=UK_Records&hash=item2c7122172d

Won't they match your address / card details etc with the other account though?
-
No not really, it's a very flat recording as well that one, they equalised all the power out of it and it sounds like it's come off an MP3
