Articles: Are Re-Edits And Mash Ups Killing Soul Music?
Pete S replied to Andy Jackson's topic in Front Page News & Articles
The problem is that that particular record can't be improved on, so anything done to it is a retrograde step. -
Nick Hamlyn?

That's truly reprehensible behaviour, someone sent me the wrong record recently, the sensible thing to do it contact him, ask him where he wants it sent and tell him to get the other guy to send me my record - all the seller lost was the extra postage but it sorted his problem out and we both got our correct records. Your customer number 2 is just a robbing b*stard and you should out him mate. He's also a thief and there's a possibility you can take action against him

PETE SMITH pete.smith@freeuk.com 01902 326306 SOME ORIGINAL 45's FOR MONDAY CROSSROADS - COMIN' HOME TO YOU BABY - ATCO DEMO EX 20 Old cover up sound from the mid 80's, good dancer TAWNY VON - LAST NIGHT (I FOUND THE BOY) - ENTRE VG++ 40 Girl group sound double sider, rated by some, production is too loud for me though. This one has some marks on the vinyl hence the grade but both sides play EX VINCE CAREY - FIRST GLANCE ROMANCE - TURNTABLE EX 10 Good dancer - probably too common to have ever made any waves EUGENE CHURCH - DOLLAR BILL - WORLD PACIFIC DEMO EX 20 Very fast dancer - swol JIMMY CASTOR - BLOCK PARTY - JET SET DEMO EX 40 Good uptempo dancer with girl backing and honking sax accompaniment FATS DOMINO - WORK MY WAY UP STEADY - BROADMOOR EX 15 Cracking New Orleans dancer - nice midtempo flip too THE DYNATONES - THE FIFE PIPER - HBR EX 10 Old, old oldie...harder West Coast styrene copy JEAN DUSHON - AS I WATCH YOU WALK AWAY - CADET DEMO EX- 30 A superb midtempo dancer, great vocals - covered in the UK by Martha Smith on Pye, not a patch on this one. Has a couple of small non-sounding marks DANELLE DARRIS - DON'T LOVE ME AND LEAVE ME - COMMERCE EX 50 Both sides of this are great. Midtempo builder on side 1, and a belter on side 2 with Danelle jumping on the Junior Walker dance craze with "Let's Do The Shotgun" . £100 elsewhere. TROY DODDS - TRYIN' TO FIND MY BABY - BAYTOWN EX- 20 Really underrated Northern belter, frantic dancer on side 2 "Earthquake". Few marks on B side. Want a cheap but excellent gem, try this one, great stuff. REGINALD DAY - LOST LOVE - MIDAS EX 25 It's never going to be packing ant dancefloors but this is a very soulful Chicago midtempo beauty JOHNNY DAYE - I'LL KEEP ON LOVING YOU - BLUE STAR EX 60 Excellent Stafford era dancer, once a very expensive record, settled down now that copies turned up but still £100 if you have a search on the net. JAMIE - THE PRICELESS GEM - MGM DEMO EX 20 I couldn't stand this when Alan Rhodes used to play it at Wigan, you know what, it actually sounds great now - in a blue eyed stomper kind of way DEAN PARRIS - TELL HER - BOOM EX 25 The very best version of this classic Bert Russell song THE CLASSIC SULLIVANS - SHAME, SHAME, SHAME - MASTER KEY VG++ 125 Lovely Chicago crossover dancer. Nothing wrong with this copy apart from a few light marks not affecting play - plays spot on. I think in other hands this would be graded EX. Bargain at the price. BABY WASHINGTON - THAT'S HOW HEARTACHES ARE MADE - SUE EX- 20 Simply beautiful LITTLE CARL CARLTON - COMPETITION AIN'T NOTHIN' - BACK BEAT EX- 20 Belting oldie. Plays mint. ROBERTA WEBB & THE FAVORITES - MY MAMA SAYS - EMANUEL VG++ OFFS This sounds a bit like a Huey Piano Smith sort of thing, maybe a bit later, It's a female vocal with male interjections and goes along the lines of Mama Don't Like Us Doing The Twist Around Here, Mama Don't Like Is Doing The Monkey Round Here and so on. Just wondered if it's known and if so, any idea of value? Have asked on various forums but nobody seems to have heard it. Wouldn't class it as soul, definitely R & B, backing is almost rockabilly! Vinyl plays great but label has some damage. https://www.divshare.com/download/24399368-0a7 REISSUES: JIMMY DELPHS - DANCING A HOLE IN THE WORLD - CARLA UNP 5 THE ISLEY BROTHERS - WHO'S THAT LADY (UNITED ARTISTS 60'S VERSION) - FRYERS UNP 5 LUTHER INGRAM ORCHESTRA - EXUS TREK / IF IT'S ALL THE SAME - SEVENS EX+ 5 1ST CLASS RECORDED IS NOW £2.40 FOR ONE RECORD WITH NO EXTRA CHARGE FOR 2 ADDITIONAL ITEMS. Here you go mate https://offer.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?RetractBidShow

Custom Emidiscs are more or less worthless - 'real' Emidiscs are worth money. If you find an acetate with two Northern tracks from different labels, thats been custom made and once the records were pressed, the Emidisc became redundant anyway.
-
Had a couple of Musicor wd's of it. UK copy is rare though, bit surprising because her first single is quite common. Here she is.. https://www.marilynpowell.co.uk/

Bernard Williams reissue but described as original, over £100 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BERNARD-WILLIAMS-HARTHON-ITS-NEEDLESS-TO-SAY-FOCUSED-ON-YOU-NORTHERN-SOUL-/261263306338?pt=UK_Records&hash=item3cd481ae62

What country, what artists?
-
No you are right, 15 isn't a lot, I just started the topic because two went up for sale in the same place on the same day and I was really surprised.
-
Only 29 views on the entire topic though, I guess a lot of people have the section filtered out maybe? Compared to hundreds when I did the recent Wigan ones?
-
Trouble is there's loads in there that are of no interest to anyone into Northern like the Motown stuff at the start (nobodys going to pay £3 for Touch me in the morning for instance), if you removed that stuff and sold them as a Northern collection you'd have more or luck. Not being nasty or anything, just telling you from a prospective buyers point of view.
-
So the question is - how many?
-
Two unplayed copies go up for sale (on here) within 24 hours of each other. Any thoughts?
-
There must be half a dozen Jades, I know there's a girl group of that name as well

Uncommon Early 70's Uk Motown Compilation Album ?
Pete S replied to Derek Pearson's topic in Look At Your Box
Thats what they were all called back in those days, never 'clubs', I used to do my own 'disco charts' consisting of records they played at our local youth club disco - the term changed meaning about 75/76 I guess -

Volume 4 was fantastic, I bought it from the record/tv shop in our village and wore it out, it had I'll Keep Holding On, Frances Nero, Al Kent, stuff like that, yellow cover with two cartoon dancers on it. -
It's really easy to give a proper description of a record though - play it and write down what you hear - look at these entries off a list I did today, nothing ambiguous about it, I'm sure it's obvious how the records will sound? SOUL BROS - TNT / MARCIA GRIFFITHS - MR. EVERYTHING - RIO 121 G++ TO VG NO CENTRE HAS CRACKLES AS PER A RECORD THATS NEVER HAD A SLEEVE I BOUGHT THIS DESCRIBED AS EX MINUS, SOMEONE NEEDS GLASSES £15 THE UPSETTERS - RETURN OF THE UGLY / I'VE CAUGHT YOU - PUNCH 18 LOTS OF MARKS BUT PLAYS WELL WITH SOME NOISE G+ TO VG £15 DERRICK MORGAN - ME NAH GIVE UP / BEVERLEYS ALLSTARS - DREADNAUGHT - PYRAMID 6053 Awesome early reggae tune from Derrick and 'Johnny Melody'. Crackles a little at the start, improving as it progresses. No centre and small writing on label. Essential Skinhead reggae. Classic Ska instrumental on B side but that is only G+/VG VG/VG++ £35

Uncommon Early 70's Uk Motown Compilation Album ?
Pete S replied to Derek Pearson's topic in Look At Your Box
Someone at Motown had their finger on the pulse, can't remember the name of the album but in around 1970-71 they released a compilation album of top dancers including "Six By Six" and the sleeve notes tell us that people travel the country just to hear this track. -
I've been playing records since I could just about walk, why stop now? I can't put an mp3 on a turntable. It's the same thing when people say they prefer LP's to CD's. You can't cherish a CD like you can with an LP. MP3's and itunes etc are fantastic for storing a library of music but nothing's ever going to take the place of an actual vinyl record which you can touch and go through the process of removing it from it's sleeve, putting it on the deck and putting the needle on the run in in anticipation. MP3 - you just click a button. Where's the love there?
-
Here's a two hour special featuring - well basically a bunch of tracks that I like, as usual - with a mixture of 60's and 70's tunes, all designed to keep the dancers happy. I must warn you, there are some quite left field selections in this lot, but at least it keeps it fun. Some of these you may not have heard for 30 years, some you might have heard yesterday, but I think it's a pretty entertaining affair and to keep within the spirit, they were all recorded from vinyl (hence a few pops and clicks here and there).
