  1. This isn't Planet Records book club but you may well be interested in this little beauty! Now the title doesn't sound up to much - "The Old Barrio Guide To Low Rider Music 1950-1975" - but wait until you see what's in it. Basically Low Rider music was the soundtrack for young Mexican/Latino teenagers to cruise around in their cars to. The music is mainly ballads and soul classics such as "Hello Stranger", that kind of thing, in other words - the B sides of the records we are interested in, and therefore many, many Northern Soul tracks and artists are mentioned. There's also a stack of fascinating information about label owners, studios and record producers. Anyway, this book contains an A to Z of the artists and records favoured by this Low Rider scene and it's an absolute treasure trove for anyone interested in obscure Northern Soul artists. For instance - there's features on: Admirations Carltons Citations Linda Carr Johnny Bartel Commands Jimmy Conwell Tony Clarke Chuck Corby Cynthia & The Imaginations Autographs Attractions Ruby Andrews Bleu Lights... That's just from opening random pages in the A, B and C sections. Hundreds of photographs of the artists including Brothers Of Soul Royal Jesters Gene Chandler Elgins (male group) Informers Frankie Karl Royal Chessmen Little Ray Vanguards Ronnie Walker Younghearts Etc And to top it off, there are 8 full colour pages of record scans. All in all, a cracking read and very reasonably priced too. I bought this book just as a hunch it might have some useful information on those obscure artists and was blown away by it and thought it might pay me to see if I can sell a few copies, so here we are. THE BOOK COSTS £15 THE POSTAGE (SENT VIA AIRMAIL FROM THE USA) IS £5 SO THE TOTAL IS £20 I'M MAKING £1.50 PER COPY BEFORE ANYONE ASKS! Anyone wanting a copy of the book, please pay directly into my paypal account (pete.smith@freeuk.com) or ring or email me me to pay via credit card (01902 893569) Please allow 14 days for delivery PETE SMITH PLANET RECORDS 28 JENKS ROAD WOMBOURNE WOLVERHAMPTON WV5 0BL 01902 893569 pete.smith@freeuk.com

  3. Well said Dan
  4. I would disagree with this point as well.
  5. I Am Nothing is a fantastic record but if you listen to it 'critically' you'll hear that the guy is about on a par with Danny Somebody New Moore when it comes to vocals
  6. Sounds like a throwaway B side and he's a bad vocalist. Must just be me then eh?
  7. That is a truly terrible song, and the singer must have been dragged in off the street. And people had the nerve to say my "Stop the clock" was rubbish. Pure gold mates, pure gold.
  8. Great record that, Are You Pushed .. was a cheapie, bought one off Glen Bellamy last year for £15, sold it for £50
  9. Seminoles is rare on that label but hard to sell, I think I took about £70 for one in the end, probably books at £125
  10. No, he quoted the version I did with all the naff tracks cut out
  11. Are you Adam Adamant ??
  12. I don't know where that rumor came from, Emerald was a decca label so why would an RCA recording come out on there anyway? Anyone remember the Irish only version of "Waterfall" by Dickie Rock on UA? Rubbish wasn't it?
  13. Yeah round here it's "her eyes were like those of a chav in the dark"
  14. No sir, it is you who has no taste. I have the best taste in music on Soul Source. It's diabolical. Voices are out of tune, there's no beat until the chorus, and even then it's badly produced. This one's got steam coming off it.
  15. Dreary is about the best I can come up with
  16. It didn't come out on Emerald. She did have a record or records released in Ireland but not that one.
  17. Real value - probably £500. Musical value - about 8 pence
  18. I said it's good as a stand alone record on it's own merits, but not if you bring it into the context of n.s. or r&b ... bit like To Sir With Love by Lulu - great record but wouldn't play it on the soul scene
  19. :graynone: :graynone: :graynone:
  20. What a load of shite Mace. Accept it, it's a turd on a stick, it's useless as a 'northern type r&b sound' and I actually like r&b. Little Queenie sounds like the best instrumental of all time next to this abortion.
  21. Well no it was probably a generalisation but also because I said this was rubbish. Don't remember an inst though.
  22. I said the same last week and they all called me a twat
  23. Any port in a storm mate...
  24. If I had one for sale now it would be £350.
  25. It's cack
