Repro's & Re - Issues.. Who Gets The Money?
Pete S replied to Harrogatesoul's topic in All About the SOUL
If thats referring to me, I apologise, but I was told by the person who wholesaled these that they were pressed for him by the people I said did it! If they weren't, I apologise -
Sherlock Holmes and The Vondells are better than the entire Philadelphia International catalogue put together...well the Vondells is

Surely the point is that we got into this music - northern soul - to get away from the music that all the herd listened to at the youth club disco - it was something a bit different, it wasn't commercial, and it was exciting. This rules out most of the Philly Int label which at that time was dominating mainstream discos.

Yeah there are mate, but stick your head above the parapet and you will get shot down by the right-ons and soul police. I've got bullet holes everywhere

Repro's & Re - Issues.. Who Gets The Money?
Pete S replied to Harrogatesoul's topic in All About the SOUL
I was on about the Soul Beat one. Never heard of the other one. -
It's very commercial sounding soul and it was made that way purposely, so where exactly does this fit into the northern soul scene's values? Most of Philly Int is soul-pop music and of little interest to the majority. IMO.
-
Yes, great records. No, not great northern soul records, which is what the original question was "why aren't they played at venues". Just gives you another chance to be holier than thou with your fantastic taste in music by the looks of it.

The Hamilton Movement ones were done by Expansion Records I think so they are likely to be legit. -
Spot on. You wouldn't have gotten away playing that sort of stuff in the 70's so why try now? Philly Allstars, Love I Lost, that was about it really. You see to be played at a Northern Soul venue, records have to be Northern Soul

The one off the Darrell Banks Is Here lp is different to the single...
-
Or is he?????
-
He was being very beligerent and practically inviting insults and people were taking the bait - totally different to an out and out attack on someone.
-
Oh thanks a lot Miff, I've had to start smoking again now after hearing that lot

I agree with all of you (no surprise there) and it's a shame that threads get locked - HOWEVER - you've got to take into consideration the legal ramifications and the site owners could be in trouble if they allow certain statements to go into public domain - at least I think that's why topics get locked (last was was the Manship/Rambler one which could have run and run for ages). In this case, it looked like a public service was being done!

Craig I don't remember seeing that one before. I'll give you £5 and some Wolves programs for it.

Just waiting for the second half to start and they are blasting Out On The Floor over the p.a. I love it when you hear northern in unexpected circumstances
-
John - note that she mentions none of this on her own website and it's not mentioned in any of her biographies!

Oh for f*cks sake, I didn't say he SHOULD HAVE DONE ANYTHING, I said couldn't he claim on insurance, not HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN INSURED. Read it again. sod this for a lark
-
It was a sarcastic reply to your utterly needless point about my asking about insurance, all I asked was would his house insurance cover it - as did someone else - and then someone said he wasn't insured, so there you go, end of conversation.
-
Oh right, I didn't realise he was sitting here reading this, I'll be more careful next time.

No, Naoimi Neville is Alan Toussaint (I think)
