I'm not singling out deep soul people, it's just that they are the ones on the thread Tone. If it were people who enjoyed medieval folk music expressing the same sort of holier than thou thoughts I'd respond the same.

The sad thing is, I haven't got or have never found an official Vibrations cd, that came from the Marginal release "Vibrations - Great Soul Hits" from 1997. Funny they left of This Heart Of Mine and Cause You're Mine.

Wendy I was there too. Did you see Candi Staton's set? She was fabulous. Voice sounded slightly rusty on the first number but after that - Stand By Your Man, In The Ghetto, Young Hearts etc - absolutely superb. I enjoyed Al, couldn't see the point of the dancers (they were a nbit of a distraction) but as a showman he was top notch. I could see the last number was going to go on and on so we slipped out then and were back home in half an hour. My missus actually won the tickets via the Express & Star, but if I'd paid £74 for two tickets I'd have wanted a bit more from Al I think. Just kicking myself we forgot the camera, being 5 rows from the front.

A few Soul releases were distributed by bell in a short-lived distribution deal, maybe that was meant to be one of them - seen loads of copies of things like The Hit Pack with the Bell details blacked out at the bottom of the label

Denise Lasalle was a truly massive Mr M's record for about 2 months in 1977, they may even have repressed it due to demand, or someone found the old stock - and it was always big here in the Midlands. Never hear it nowadays - or since about 1980 to be honest

records like this, Billy Hambric, Syng McGowan - up to about 4 years back I was selling these for 30, 40 quid, then they suddenly all go into 3 figures and people go along with it. Have never understood this. John Bowie, Ringleaders, all records which were available in massive quantities in the 70's, it's ok saying they are all in collections but they are evidently not going by the amount that turn up on ebay every week.

Yes they did. And a cover of the Spinners I'll Always Love You and Cal Tjaders Soul Sauce. Dammit, used to have all of those. They also did a very weird song called Baked Jam Roll In Your Eye which I used to have.

I was going to tell you who Keith's version was by but he spoiled it by giving the answer away. This was released to cash in on the mod revival and they reactivated the Direction label especially. He was a UK based black soul singer who now works with Manfred Manns Earth Band! I think it's a terrible version by the way

Yes but Mike Hollis was also a 'mobile dj' who played pop soul at places like The Kingfisher in Wall heath and everyone knew him, honestly, if Lenny Henry was around we would have known him because he would have had to have hung around with the Wton, Dudley, Halesowen, Stourbridge or Kiddy people, unless he went on his own. There's a photo of him and Chris Tarrant djing with kev Roberts at Notts Palais but thats from 79 or 80.

Listened to all of the tracks and after the brilliant "On Bond Street" album this will take a bit of getting used to. Thought I heard backing tracks to I Can't Stand It, Bam Bam, even one that sounded like The Heptones Change Gonna Come. But the best of the lot was Tribute To Jackie Mittoo which was an instrumental of Phyllis Dillon's Don't Stay Away which is fantastic.

Fraid it wasn't mine - it was my friend Roger's. Went round his house to pick up some singles he wanted me to sell and I couldn't believe the albums...any album you can think of, he'd got, I was going 'bet you haven't got so and so' and he'd go straight to it and show it me. It's a very rare album anyway I think, I doubt he'd sell it.
