Reluctant sale of this fantastic 6 cd box set from Rhino, released in 1997. The packaging is worth the price itself. Each disc has a fascimile label of a classic logo and is mounted on a record shaped card. It comes with a booklet and a great set of cards featuring period photos of the artists and biogs etc. And of course it all comes in a mini record box. Long out of print, I remember this costing me about £70 at the time plus the customs got hold of it and I ended up paying another £30 in duty. That was 10 years ago mind. See the photos and read the reviews and if you're tempted I'm looking for £115 for this. Amazon have them at up to $315 (over £155) Six CDs, and 144 songs, of classic '60s soul, including selections by every major performer in the idiom (except for Sam Cooke and Sly Stone, who were unavailable for licensing reasons), as well as numerous influential minor performers, one-shot artists, and just plain unknowns. The music is classic, and the packaging is an event in itself, with the discs enclosed in a mock briefcase for carrying 45 singles, and trading cards for each song on the volume that have photos and trivia questions on front, and mini-essays on the back. Yet it ultimately occupies a rather perplexing space on the collector's shelf. Anyone who's enough of a soul lover to fork over the dough for this production will no doubt have a good many of the tunes already, particularly the Hall of Fame hits like "Sweet Soul Music," "(I Know) I'm Losing You," "Don't Make Me Over," and "La-La-Means I Love You." There are numerous great rarities here -- Jay Wiggins' magnificent melancholy ballad "Sad Girl," and the rare original versions of "Shake a Tail Feather" (the Five Du-Tones), "Tainted Love" (Gloria Jones), "Mustang Sally" (Sir Mack Rice), and "Piece of My Heart" (Erma Franklin). Yet the tracks used to represent some superstars -- "You've Been in Love Too Long" for Martha & the Vandellas, or "Fly Me to the Moon" for Bobby Womack -- seem almost deliberately idiosyncratic, even though this method also yields underrated off-the-beaten-tracks by Ray Charles ("In the Heat of the Night"), Al Green ("Back Up Train"), and others. It's almost as if some guys stayed up several nights running trying to make the ultimate '60s soul party tape -- one which demonstrated both their impeccable taste and the depth of their record collection -- and got so carried away with the idea that a box set resulted. Like all well-made party tapes, the content is excellent, but the sum is neither a definitive '60s soul box (an impossible task in any case), nor one which offers quite enough lost classics to justify its hefty price tag for those who already have half or more of the tunes. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide Link to Amazon where a new copy is up at $314.98 https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00...p;condition=new

Pete.smith@freeuk.com 01902 893569 This is a complete set of the Grapevine label Northern 45's. Most are in excellent or mint condition. A couple are VG+ and one has a bit of writing on the label, otherwise it's a near perfect set. Looking at £400 or nearest offer. No it's exactly the same as the original!
-
No, I doubt it - reason being, in 1975 Chubby Checker had a hit with a reissue of Lets Twist Again, and so London in the UK followed that with At The Discotheque and then about 10 months later with You Just Don't Know - which is probably why it got a release in Spain in 76, just to match up with the Uk release. But the masters were owned by ABKCO (Alan Kleins company) and still are, or were until recently - he also held/holds the Rolling Stones masters from the Decca years

You mean "wants" list I think
-
Have to say I didn't realise this was in the Sales section, I thought because there was so much discussion it was in look at your box, so apologies for that, however I would like to see a debate about it in look at your box if someone could start one.
-
Yes this turns up quite regularly, a lot of them are white demos - I sell it for £25
-
Football boring is it?
-
I never made any claims for that record apart from saying it's ultra rare, which it is. If you want to listen to second rate pop-gospel then I'm very happy for you
-
Used to have a great UK A&M demo of this with RADIO BUTLIN written on the label. It's worth about a tenner on UK. More if it has RADIO BUTLIN written on it.
-
It should be an offence to play it full stop
-
No, only one was, you got it
-
Juts sold actually but cheers for the plug

Thats the one, Work Song...dead ringer

Oops sorry Pete, I forgot to be honest. Yes hmm I think I'll keep it for a bit. When I sell it you can have it for £40 if you want it.

One of those records that very rarely comes up for sale and when it does, it's gone in a flash. I've never had a copy of this. It probably is 300 but when you see things like the Ellusions with daft prices like 400/500 on them, and I've had half a dozen of those, it makes you wonder. I think I'd want 400 for a copy if I had one.
-
Well I've only heard half of it and that half was average, what else can I say?
-
George Hobson is utter sh*te Paul, truly truly awful. A record of almost Carstairs-like rubbishness. That new one of yours is ok but the word average could have been invented for it, which is why I'd like to have heard the spectacular second part of the record. Wade in the water - old slave songs - they all have the same tune more or less, and thats what your guy is singing.

Thanks John. I thought it was a tough one. A good investment for my buyer then!
