lorraine Chandler stole the show at Stafford, came out from the wings singing "tell me your mine" and the hairs stood up on the back of your neck ! eddie was filling the show up with soul classics (knock on wood) both were excellent at Vauxhall weekender. see if they've still got it at Prestatyn in march, by the way can anyone name all the backing singers at Stafford, Rob Marriott, danny Everade, a young Butch ? maybe Keb ? i think there were 5 in all !!

All previous quotes taken from "Lets learn French" (simple words and phrases for beginers buying records off dodgy continental types) Manships, Kev's and tim browns versions to follow.

Made me smile Chalky, remember your first trip to the canal tavern when gary welsh was running it ? before Rod took over. you nearly wore a groove in that dance floor that night !! more new stuff was played later on at the Tavern when the Cream of the Crossover rod had been building up started to run out, plus he was getting New stuff from the States via richard carrington what ever happened to him ?!

I think it was Voices from the shadows main man Rod Dearlove circa 1987/88. I wrote an article for Echoes around that time after visiting the Canal Tavern at Thorne, Reflections at Liecester and The Collesium in Derby Danny Everade was running with Tats. All 3 venues were playing 70s soul music which was popular at the early weekenders. Rare Groove had just taken off in London. I was looking for a name to describe the music being played, it wasn't Modern nor was it Northern, I put a Tag of Goodtime Soul music which fitted as we were all having a bloody good time (a solid hard core of about 50 or so people travelling with another 70-80 on the fringe ). rod kept writing about this scene and the records that were played, Bobby Reed (Bell £8), Stan Ivory (£5), Chestnut brothers etc which he was also selling via his mail order list under the general section, then under the title crossover soul as more and more of these records were played or re-discovered. there is an excellent article that Rod wrote in Voices No 16 1991 which gives an insight to these records that were played at thorne, Parkers and morecombe/early southport weekenders which eventually lead to the birth of the Soul essence weekenders in yarmouth, all good stuff basically Crossover is 1969 to 1974 that was ignored by the stomping northern scene and over looked by the Modern scene because it wasn't "new". generally mid tempo but good dancers with soulful vocals. perfect for todays 40 plus arthritic crowd with bad knees and very sought after by people who missed them at the time . hope that helps Rob

THEY CAN ONLY SUE YOU IF ITS A LIE, WHAT ABOUT WIGAN DJS GETTING SACKED FOR BOOTLEGGING ? SPEEDED UP TURNTABLES, STOP PUSHING AT THE BACK AND ALL THE LITTLE POPETTES THAT VISITED THAT LOCKED OFFICE IN THE BACK OF THE CASINO ? JUST A QUICK LINE TO SAY WHAT A MARVELLOUS TURN OUT AT DEREK ALLEN'S FUNERAL ON FRIDAY. IT SHOW'S WHAT RESPECT THE GUY WAS HELD IN THROUGHOUT THE SCENE WITH PEOPLE THERE FROM ALL OVER THE UK, I'D GUESS AT AROUND 400 TURNED UP AT THE CREMATORIUM TO PAY THEIR RESPECTS A VERY EMOTIONAL AFFAIR AS ALL THESE THINGS ARE. A QUICK THANK YOU TO CHRIS KING WHO HAS HELPED WITH A LOT OF THE ORGANISING AND TO THE OTHERS INVOLVED AT THE JAGUAR AFTERWARDS, EVERYONE HAD A TALE TO TELL ABOUT DEREK. ITS SAD WHEN THESE THINGS HAPPEN BUT THE SCENE PAID TRIBUTE TO A TRULY UNIQUE, FRIENDLY GUY. THERE IS THE DO IN DEREKS MEMORY TONIGHT (SUNDAY) AT ILKESTON REGENCY DETAILS ARE POSTED ON THE SITE.

we all suffer at the hands of our work mates, family & non-soul friends with the "Northern" tag. However it does have the odd advantage in that every one always knows somebody who is into northern soul, bet your life when your friend says to you "I 've got this mate who's into northern, he's got thousands of records" so off you go around to his house after being introduced on the telephone he's not got one record that ain't a bootleg, he's got the full set of Goldmine CDs, he's never set foot in an all-nighter, he's never been to a soul night out side his own town (but he runs one so he and his best mate can Dj !) and he has patches stiched on to his polo shirt from evry all-nighter that ever was and he has a double family sized bucket of KFC for every meal. Don't come away feeling disapointed, just feel lucky that you've made the effort to get into the roots of this music ,made friends from around the country (and the world) and can walk into any all-nighter in the Uk and know at least half the people in there and stand and talk bollocks to derek pearson all-night about half a dozen brilliant records that never saw the light of day out side a record shop in Detroit for nearly half a century ! Once this sceen gets hold of you there ain't nothing you can do about it ! I love it !

Thanks hippo that was it, Iswear it was slower than that, and another quote from Mr Searling "I don't think Blackpool mecca in its hey day played anything quite as good as this..........Night time shaddows" pass the Mogadons

ok then what about this one and has it ever been un covered would like to know as I ain't heard this one in years. Mr searling used to play Mike Theodor Orchestra "Nightime Shadows" inst at the casino around 1978/79. He then sold or swopped it with Sam when he was DJing at the casino. I asked sam about it in the late 80's/90's and he couldn't remeber it at all ! he played it for ages covered up.then it disappeared Anybody any wiser ?

the first time I came across Pete was via mail order in the NME offering Top sounds cica 1974 I think (pre-Black Echoes). i was after Billy Woods, candi staton and earnest mosley at the time .i sent for a list and you could choose 10 records for about £8. All the top sounds were on the list (Like seeing Butch's playlist now) So I sent off my Postal Orders to peter Lawson I got back a 12" Acetate with just one record I had ordered plus the other tracks which by then had been bootlegged ! I wrote a letter of complaint and after about a year I got a cheque back from pete's dad saying he was ill in Hospital, he was of course in the clink ! On his release I met Pete at Wigan and he became a lifelong friend too many stories to tell but my fav is when I had a copy of laura Greene Moonlight for sale in the record bar at wigan Pete is looking through my box and says "that used to be in me top 5 records of all time I had it tattooed on my chest" at this he takes off his shirt and low and behold it was there No 1 was Jerry Williams "If you asked me" Calla years later at Wigan i took a photo of Pete without his shirt on and you can read them. I will dig out the photo and post it! Anyone who attended pete's funeral will remember jerry Williams being played at the service, there are not many day's that go by without Pete's name cropping up and it took ages before I got used to going into a nighter and not hearing the Scouse tones of his usual greeting "Allright Rob" A true friend and a Diamond of a bloke.
