  1. JUST A QUICK LINE TO SAY WHAT A MARVELLOUS TURN OUT AT DEREK ALLEN'S FUNERAL ON FRIDAY. IT SHOW'S WHAT RESPECT THE GUY WAS HELD IN THROUGHOUT THE SCENE WITH PEOPLE THERE FROM ALL OVER THE UK, I'D GUESS AT AROUND 400 TURNED UP AT THE CREMATORIUM TO PAY THEIR RESPECTS A VERY EMOTIONAL AFFAIR AS ALL THESE THINGS ARE. A QUICK THANK YOU TO CHRIS KING WHO HAS HELPED WITH A LOT OF THE ORGANISING AND TO THE OTHERS INVOLVED AT THE JAGUAR AFTERWARDS, EVERYONE HAD A TALE TO TELL ABOUT DEREK. ITS SAD WHEN THESE THINGS HAPPEN BUT THE SCENE PAID TRIBUTE TO A TRULY UNIQUE, FRIENDLY GUY.

THERE IS THE DO IN DEREKS MEMORY TONIGHT (SUNDAY) AT ILKESTON REGENCY DETAILS ARE POSTED ON THE SITE.

  2. we all suffer at the hands of our work mates, family & non-soul friends with the "Northern" tag. However it does have the odd advantage in that every one always knows somebody who is into northern soul, bet your life when your friend says to you "I 've got this mate who's into northern, he's got thousands of records" so off you go around to his house after being introduced on the telephone he's not got one record that ain't a bootleg, he's got the full set of Goldmine CDs, he's never set foot in an all-nighter, he's never been to a soul night out side his own town (but he runs one so he and his best mate can Dj !) and he has patches stiched on to his polo shirt from evry all-nighter that ever was and he has a double family sized bucket of KFC for every meal.

Don't come away feeling disapointed, just feel lucky that you've made the effort to get into the roots of this music ,made friends from around the country (and the world) and can walk into any all-nighter in the Uk and know at least half the people in there and stand and talk bollocks to derek pearson all-night about half a dozen brilliant records that never saw the light of day out side a record shop in Detroit for nearly half a century ! Once this sceen gets hold of you there ain't nothing you can do about it ! I love it !

  3. ok then what about this one and has it ever been un covered would like to know as I ain't heard this one in years. Mr searling used to play Mike Theodor Orchestra "Nightime Shadows" inst at the casino around 1978/79. He then sold or swopped it with Sam when he was DJing at the casino. I asked sam about it in the late 80's/90's and he couldn't remeber it at all ! he played it for ages covered up.then it disappeared Anybody any wiser ? :sleep3:

  4. Inspired by recent post, and while have hit the lp tracks topic a few times think a worthy quick hit and run thread would be worthwhile motown lp only tracks

well known, should be well known, oddball, cover versions, etc etc

kick it off with two from same lp that always enjoy and still hear 24 hrs out and about now and again

    Edwin Starr - 25 Miles

24 Hours (to find my baby) and Soul City (open your arms to me)

    link

Its got to be THE VELVELETTES "THESE THING WILL KEEP ME LOVING YOU" with the different words ! I will be playing this to the Velvelettes personally on Friday at the Great yarmouth weekender bet they haven't heard it since they recorded the record ! Also bet the person who put the WRONG version on the compilation LP didn't even know he had done it ! Long live BUB and the TRACKY Club for always playing it!

the first time I came across Pete was via mail order in the NME offering Top sounds

cica 1974 I think (pre-Black Echoes). i was after Billy Woods, candi staton and earnest mosley at the time .i sent for a list and you could choose 10 records for about £8. All the top sounds were on the list (Like seeing Butch's playlist now)

So I sent off my Postal Orders to peter Lawson I got back a 12" Acetate with just one record I had ordered plus the other tracks which by then had been bootlegged ! I wrote a letter of complaint and after about a year I got a cheque back from pete's dad saying he was ill in Hospital, he was of course in the clink !

On his release I met Pete at Wigan and he became a lifelong friend too many stories to tell but my fav is when I had a copy of laura Greene Moonlight for sale in the record bar at wigan Pete is looking through my box and says "that used to be in me top 5 records of all time I had it tattooed on my chest" at this he takes off his shirt and low and behold it was there No 1 was Jerry Williams "If you asked me" Calla years later at Wigan i took a photo of Pete without his shirt on and you can read them. I will dig out the photo and post it!

Anyone who attended pete's funeral will remember jerry Williams being played at the service, there are not many day's that go by without Pete's name cropping up

and it took ages before I got used to going into a nighter and not hearing the Scouse tones of his usual greeting "Allright Rob" A true friend and a Diamond of a bloke.
