A couple of years ago I was lucky enough to spend some time with Harold and Tex in Memphis. One of the things we did together was a 2 hour radio show on a Memphis public radio station. The show features Harold and Tex talking about their records including the story about La Beat and their aborted audition for Motown with plenty of music thrown in.

If anyone wants to hear the show then please drop me a line and I can burn it on to 2 CDs.

    Please contact me direct colin.dilnot@btinternet.com

    Cheers

  2. Couldnt you get her to stay till 18th March for Prestatyn...now that would make a luvverly birthday pressie for me :):)

  3. Talking to Kims manager and her tour has been extended in to March as well, as she is now going to be withe The temptations in France in the later half of March.

If any promoters wish to put kim on at thier venues please get in touch and iwill let you know where she is on. looking at the North west for a decent sized gig and still searching for a Midlands venue.

kim is backed by a Live 4 piece band and the show lasts between 50 min and an Hour plus.

  6. i talk to paul quite often and always find his comments helpful, I have advertised several of my own events in the mag as well and put it out at events. However i used to sell Shades of Soul for derek and soul survivor in the 80s & 90s both off my list and at venues. it sometimes made you feel like a right dick trying to get 80p/£1/£2 out of your mates for a copy of a brilliant mag like shades / SS as they all thought i was making a fortune selling it. I still have back copies i never sold (Honest !)

you'll always get the ones "i'll get it at the end of the night" who are to pissed to get one then and i really wouldn't want to be stood with a pile of mags all-night, however the wholsale rate is good and an incentive to sell as long as punters want to buy something that has been free since it arrived.

a hard one to call, but i think that keeping it free and charging slightly more on the ads would have been a better option. All credit to paul on a great idea and a landmark publication.

  7. I was there !!! I'd guess it was around 1977/78, we were outside waiting for the Casino to open and they were still playing !!! It delayed the All-nighter opening by at least an hour probably more!

They would not let us in !, Slade had two articulated trucks full of sound gear they had to move before the nighter could start, there was nearly a riot outside then a black Rolls Royce came round the front of the casino with the band in it, Dave Hill ,Noddy were clearly visable and followed by about 100 screaming teenage girls.

    Them were the days

  8. Alan Darker, once of Lincoln /Sheffield now living in the Manchester area was late for a book signing in Manchester. He went in a Taxi, got to Waterstones, open the door very quickly and knocked a guy flat on his back, he went to say sorry and pick the guy up only to discover that it was-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MUHAMED ALI, honest its true--so that leads to the next question "Who are the only 2 English guys to knock Ali over ? "

  9. It would be interesting to see a poll - if you were a straight down the centre Northern Soul fan, which other variety would you most like to hear if you had to pick one - "modern" and all it's offshoots, or "r & b" ditto. 100% hands down choice would be r & b for me.

Pete I think this is what i wanted to say, we are all going out to venues but what sort would they be if we had the choice ?

Russ is also right in the fact that the best nighters mix the music and don't have Two rooms

  10. ohmy.gif no mind games, it's just that it is different horses for different courses. i went to a "Mod/Scooterist " do the other week, someones birthday. Only knew a few people there out of the 400 or so, didn't know the dj s and i heard more blinding originals than come out of many a top D js box. They also mixed in the usual Yardbids, Who and Small Faces and some other stuff, but the "Northern" was spot on !

As most know on here i personally like nearly everything except the early RnB that has been played, just not my cup of tea at all, saying that Roger banks has some great soulful early stuff and unreleased early Motown that would fall in to the RnB band which is great.

just thought it would raise a discussion thats all
