He wasn't very well before Christmas but did not know he'd gone in for some hospital food to save having to cook Christmas dinner ! We have just spoken to his daughter Jo and he has responded to treatment really well and hopes to be out tomorrow all being well. Thanks for putting this up Leon we had been trying to ring him over Xmas. karen & Rob

100% right on the Black echoes Special (issue no2 if my memory serves me right!) Great feature on Cleethorpes pier 1st anniversary. It names john Manship as the buyer of 7 day lover at £180 as he was "having orgasams" evrytime he heard it ! Also mentions The tramps AKA The Volcanoes appearing. happy days. I know Chris Marriot spent £100 on "Lady in green" at The Notts Palais around 1978 ish (off Sam I think) There is also an interesting feature in Shades of Soul Jan 84 issue no1 where Derek states "if youve got £100 and are willing to spend it on just one record take your pick from this list of the following US mega-rarities" (if they ever come for sale that is !) Gwen Owens "wanted & needed" Velgo White demo Frank Wilson "Do I love you" Soul Jimmy Burns "I really love you" Erica Yvonne Vernee "Just like you did me" Sonbert Larry |Clinton "Wanted in 3 states" Dynamo Magnetics "Lady in green" Bonnie Robbie Lawson "Burning sensation" Kyser Del Larks " Job opening" Queen City DEMO William Powell "Heartaches souvenirs" Power House Norma Jenkins "The aeroplane song" Maltesse Executive 4 "you got a good thing going" John & The weirdest "No time/"Cant get over" Tie Ramonna Collins "Youve been cheatin'" Clarks Court davis "try to think" East Coast Chessmen c/u "Like I never did before" Derek also says "I personally could not bring myself to spend that amount (£100) on one record" EEEE lad spoken like a true Yorkshireman ! Oh and while we're whinging, who's knob do you have to suck to get a mention on the radio??? Not sure which radio you mean , but several soul shows I know of in your area i think all you have to do is drop them an e-mail and most will quite happily give your venue a plug. (pm me and i will point you in the right direction) 12 years on and you must be doing something right, however i suspect when you started there was hardly owt on in your area. You are up against some well know competion. And, after all that-apart from the numbers-I enjoyed it -so there Thats all that matters. Rob Tony

We know chris and marcelle and the CIS was a "one off" with Ronnie Walker. We have also run small Soul nights over many years and obviously larger venues and weekenders as well. If we had "packers" we put money to one side to make up for the times when we were not going to be as busy. CIS is not the only All-Nighter in your area this weekend, "Souldham" or whatever its called is on tonight in Oldham and I think is a mainly Oldies based event. So this may have had something to do with it as well. I'm afraid "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink" How many punters were you down last night ? how many do you normally get in ? remember people have Christmas "Do's" from work and these are mainly on a friday as well ! We do feel for you and know what its like to try and run a regular do, but try not to pin the blame on one event or promoter. Ronnie Walker was excellent last night and there were many travellers in the CIS from all over the country. They did not strike me as a local soul night crowd anyway, but if it took 20 or 30 punters away from your event and you loose another 20 or 30 because of the other event then it can make a difference. Hope the next one is better for you Rob & karen

I Can't Believe The Price On These
Rob Wigley replied to Prophonics 2029's topic in Look At Your Box
I know a little bit about the origin of this bootleg the original was bought off Soul Bowl for £20 around 1981 by a well known collector in North Notts. He was pestered to death by the guy who bootlegged it (and several hundred other titles) and sold for it cash and other originals. about £80 worth i think The label was done on an early colour photo copier-but print is slightly blured and not sharp Within a week the bootleg appeared and was selling at £8.00 a copy ( an obvious boot of a Northern record was around £2-£3) being passed off as part of a find in the USA. I got one for £4 when the fuss died down then "found" an original 45 in Detroit around 1987. really a very hard to find record on an original. Rob -
I think I remember being 21 once ! great to hear that you are well into it, I will Echo what steve said and start at the cheaper end of the scale, buy US ORIGINALS or UK labels like kent or try and get the Grapevine sets together, still most are easily obtainable around £10 and they are only in runs of 500 i think and include many big nighter sounds, unreleased gemsSo it won't cost a fortune and will form a solid base to your future collection. Above all BUY WHAT YOU LIKE TO HEAR, Good luck Rob & Karen

Got a call from Melvin Davis regarding "Chains of love" by The Dirtbombs being used in the French Film The Diving Bell and The butterfly. He asked me to do a bit of digging around for him and i found the track and a lot about the film which looks very interesting as it was premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and looks set for a USA release. This is all good news for Melvin as he will be able to get his hands on some well deserved royalties Not sure if the link will work below but if not copy & paste into your browser https://www.pinglewood.com/2007/October/The..._Butterfly.html The Dirtbombs version is very raw and i like it a lot, they are from Detroit and the lead singer looks black as well. Melvin sends his regards to all his "Soul Angels" in the UK and hopefully will see you in 2008 Rob & Karen

Pameline - The Detroit Executives - Cool Off
Rob Wigley replied to Dave Thorley's topic in Look At Your Box
This thread made me smile, looks like all the hard core collectors have ALL 3 COPIES anyway I have , I know Tats has, its just one of those records that you just love. i also suspect we all bought them when they were very cheap !! so as we were not sure we just bough them all Rob -
Just had a text from Martin Dixon MODERNISM soul night this friday (see his thread) £3 to get in or £5 per couple --he must be making a fortune

At the end of the day we put on events for people to enjoy themselves, but try chucking live acts into the melting pot as well. Add in days taken off work, lugging sound systems in and out etc. We now prefare to do one off or bigger venues and are still looking to bring over individual acts when we can afford to do it. Karens party cost somewhere in the region of £2,000 and all the DJs did it for free, including Richie Pitts, but what a fantastic selection of music got played ! everyone seemed to enjoythemselves and thats what it is all about. We will keep on doing what we love no matter what happens and if we loose money along the way then we won't worry either however when we did the Masonic hall in Worksop we broke even or lost money and they took a fortune over the bar, they them tried to up the room price from £200 to £300 ! Told them where to stick their venue and walked away sooner than increase the doorprice from £5 to £6. Northern do's are great value for money and I suspect are cheap because we have always travelled to get to them, thus incuring costs of petrol train fares etc. Add the cost of the travell on to you door price and it about evens out to a "Local" p**sheads nbightclub. Rob & Karen (saving up for our next event !)
