  1. Good thread, I'd totally forgotten about these all-dayers and indeed Eddy Being local (Warsop near Mansfield before moving to Worksop) it was on my doorstep and I think I went twice, again if you'd asked me I though these ran more than the 3 times mentioned. They were really good. The original Broken Wheel always had an air of "Mystique" about it being one of the original Mod venues, but I think this was a different venue with the same name. Hi Eddy, I was a very young kid, but contacted you several times on the 'phone maybe early eighties, re copies of Blues & Soul and records you were selling. I seem to recall you telling me some great tales of the early scene! (nuff said !) Nice to hear you are still around and keeping an eye on things, have you seen Malc Burton is a member on here ? I don't know if you get back to Retford at all, but "The Broken Wheel" name is alive and well in yet another location, a pub on the cross roads where you turn for North Leverton. Rob.
  2. Clever feckers them Germans ! If they did all the northern it would be great, a small "record" box and you'd get your CDs "Free" underneth the plastic ! Rob
  3. Hi Tony got any pictures ? and have you still got the badge !! R & K
  4. Come on Julian Bentley, where are you when we need ya ?? So it does exist then, i thought it was like the vocal to 6 x 6 and just a rumour ! Rob
  5. Melvin Davis 1962--ealry stuff to present day, still doing it !! R & K
  6. Cheers Chalky , Sounded much better when i was smashed Sorry pete , It is a bit faster , Sounds a bit like Elvis
  7. There was a thread recently that said could a WEEKLY all-nighter/venue survive now ? I doubt if ANYBODY would keep the faith as we did back in the 70's 1) We were young, enthusiastic, had OPEN minds, energy (artificially stimulated or not) and didn't have 1,000 other day to day things to do! 2) There is not the depth of "Right" records to fuel such a venue without dipping into the past. 3) You'd have to hand it back to "the Kids" to keep it going and the music would change. A weekly all-nighter COULD survive if there were no others on ANYWHERE full stop. But you would also have to have some serious DJ rotation You also would have had the "Smashie and Nicey" DJ syndrome if the Casino had carried on reguardless. Like Radio One , it had to change, our music was underground, from the street or ghetto man, un -available and un-heard outside of the clubs and all-nighters. Now its all over the place in its most popular form, Telly, radio, CDs, MP 3 downloads. It WILL go back underground, the signs are already there and it will also travel away from this Island Kingdom of ours. The Casino every week, been there and done that and loved it at the time, but I now need clean toilets, somewhere to sit (those of you who have seen the state my knees are in will understand) and a warm comfy bed within 30 miles (or less) of the venue. Thank God for Travelodge ! Rob
  8. Am I right in thinking the origins of the Soul Badge lie in The Twisted Wheel ? I seem to remember talking Bo***ck's to some "Old Boy" at Wigan one night who was telling me about having clothes made, the trousers, bowling shirts and having a BLAZER made (when did you last see anyone wearing a BLAZER who wasn't at school ?) I am pretty sure that he told me they had the badges specially made for the Blazer breast pocket, (which is akin to those Royal British Legion ex-servicemen you see marching in the Rememberance Day Parade ) I'm sure he also told me someone had some Twisted Wheel one's made in Limited Edition with REAL GOLD THREAD included Anybody know if this is true (come on old boy's we need you) If it is anyone got a picture or scan or even their original "Blazer". Surely this would be "The holy grail" of all Soul Patches Rob & Karen
  9. Hi Ian But with a few thousand Northern tunes I could do some damage. When was the last time anyone played Sterling McGee's "Keep On", the Perigents "Love's On A Rampage", Peaches & Herb's "I Need Your Love So Desperately" or The Fabulous Downbeats "Life Goes On" for instance? Would they even be in the box for a gig? can you imagine someone coming to the decks, asking for something you haven't got you can say "I haven't got that with me IT'S ON MY OTHER HARD DRIVE !" ? not the same ring as "it's in my other box" God, there's TONS of stuff which is surely underplayed isn't there? A lot of the time it's 'cos the DJ doesn't have them with him or her because they only have the couple of hundred tunes which they know will be generally OK. I feel there is already a grassroots movement or trend towards these records being played with 3 Clubs I know which moving in this direction as a direct "Backlash" against overplayed oldies and VERY expensive rare or popular tunes. No big crowds, just dedicated SOUL people enjoying the records. However none of the people involved would be seen dead whipping the old Hard Drive out when stepping up to the decks
  10. Is this the proof of the old saying "What goes round, comes round" ? Also this topic was being discussed on Chris Evans "drive Time" Radio 2 at 6.30 pm today, they said the CD single would be dead and gone very soon !
  11. I,ve been thinking about this since I posted, how do Artist actually get the product out there these days ? promos on MP 3 with a big red A on 'em? Give me the simple life ! By the way Pete can you imagine having all your collection on a Hard drive (presume its detachable) and leaving it on a bus ? Phone call to the Lost property department "Err I've left my record collection on your No39 bus mate, anybody found it, about 300 albums ?" still blows my mind ! Rob
  12. Here is a link to a news article that caught my eye today, we talk about the demise of traditional record shops, but no CD singles any more !! Wow ! look here https://uk.news.yahoo.com/vdunet/20080527/t...ia-6315470.html CDs are alive and well for album sales, but the physical singles market is in terminal decline. Rob & karen
  13. Ian I saw Russ Winstanley on TV "Richard & Judy Show" claiming he invented "The Meat Pie sandwich" around 3 years ago. He was on some sort of get fit loose inches off your waist type thing they did. So that is the second thing Russ invented....... Rob
  14. Only the great die young ! Shows she's still not forgotten 30 odd years after her death RIP
  15. He is a bloody good singer live ! Is there any earlier relationship with the Temptations ? Rob
  16. We love both sides, just a titbit of trivia. When David Ruffin and Eddie Kendrick came over on the Temptations tour in 1991 they introduced the rest of the group with them and Nate Evans was a Temp, it caused quite a stir amoungst the folks that night in Donny ! Rob & Karen
  17. We spent ages looking for Mr Smith and drew blanks all round, a real mystery man, on the subject of ask or Axe Bobby thurstons classic "just ask me" will never sound the same when you listen to it again now "just AXE me, Just AXE me baby, why don't cha just Axe me, just AXE me baby" I'd buy you a hatchet, just say the word, don't use a chainsaw you'll look like a nerd I want you to Axe me, "just AXE me, Just AXE me baby, why don't cha just Axe me, just AXE me baby" or something like that Rob
  18. Melvin Davis told us a great tale about his band The Jaywalkers melvin Davis, Steve Mancha, Lyman & David Ruffin. Driving back from a gig in upsate Michigan and finding a Roller Coaster on a farm in the middle of nowhere, a farmer had build a great big F**k off wooden roller coaster in an atemp to become the new disneyland or Coney island in Mich. They all had consumed copulous amounts of illegal substances and got on the coaster--6 hours later they are still on it after riding it constantly, they just couldn't get out of the carriages and the more they tried the more they laughed and it set off again causing them to laugh more ! He tells it really well, and there's 3 BIG LEGENDS involved as well ! Rob & karen
