  1. Think you need the "Calling all promoters thread"
  2. paul , its a tale about people to be claiming to be "Z" list DJs, a term that was invented by error as a off the cuff remark, in the course of a week and 5,000 hits later we have more z list Djs than A list Djs. I lost the plot on page 3. i must say to all the people claiming to be Z listers, that none of you qualify a) because you're not paying bootlegs or EMIs you know what you're talking about c) your not really running your own do's trying to become noticed I thought the thread had run its course by Thursday, but if you can't pick it up Paul the question was "Are there more DJs than punters?", the answer is "No, not at the moment, but unless things change there will be" two final bits, No one"owns" the scene though many have tried, so you make of it what suits you, if its listening to the Top 500 then thats fine, or if you want ultra rare stuff then thats fine as well. Enjoy yourself and have a good time and I think there may be an opening for a play here Paul , you could call it "Once upon a night onSoul Source or "revenge of the Z listers" Rob ps Loved your play, very observant and the Z listers don't actually releaise they are Z listers national wink day
  3. Hi Chris and Marcelle We have some very special memories of the New Century events, never had a bad one, enjoyed working with you both and your numerous co-promoters and I still think the CIS in Manchester had/ has something very special about it. Maybe all the ghosts of the past performers and being privvy to the vast backstage areas as well gave an insight into your events that many would not normally see. I think you "raised the bar" in event promoting and took it away from back street copy shops and scruffy villiage halls which were the norm before N.C. appeared raising the standard of events generally during the first part of the new Millenium. you also had the guts to bring over live acts, which i personally think was your strong point. good luck in everything you plan to do Rob & karen
  4. he's around in Stoke, but not going out much . His daughter had quite a sucessful Record in the Southern Hemisphere, Top 10 job in quite a few countries, i know he spent a lot of time on that, helping her out. But honestly not seen him for ages, a great bloke. Pm me your address and I'll send your badge when its made , no i'll send you a Bridlington Programme. bet your going down the Coast to Steve's Do aren't you ? Rob
  5. Stick with it and get out when you can, glad your into the sounds, can't fault ya Rob
  6. Hope they get the colour of the drugs right---
  7. One man's A lister is another man's B lister though.. And who can say what ' the right calibre' is for these young DJ's?... Is that like the Northern Soul version of X Factor?... X X X DJS THAT NEVER GET A CHANCE TO CHANGE THE WORLD, THE ONLY WAY TO DO IT IS TO START YOUR OWN "DO"................ARGHHHHHH ! THIS YEARS BEST DJ--TATS, MY OTHER FAVE'S INCLUDE, CLIFF STEELE, ROB KAYE & DEN MaC, DAVE WELDING, MOLLY, SEAN HAMPSEY. STEVE HOBBS......and about 100 others! MOST PROMISING NEWCOMER-- SOUL SAM rob
  8. I'd give you chance Paul, but I want to hear you Djing first, or if you were coming to Bridlington you can start in the 3rd room playing what you like as long as its original and different. There you go Rob ps Don't tell Ken
  9. What happens to the ones who are as old as like your 60/65 and i know you could maybe carry on for what is say 10/15 years or as long as you feel what happens to Northern soul then when there are less DJ's cause all the best ones are well into there 70's and 80's. Won't there be any younger DJ's like i would like to DJ more and cause i am only 27 i have plenty of years left to keep it going but you don't seem to see a lot of people like me DJing it's all about the ones who have been around years and know more about the music Good point, I'd been DJing for 13 years by the time I got to your age, 7 years learning the craft Then running my own event (Tudor Barn, playing across the board and cutting edge with guests proper A listers Soul Sam, Richard Searling, Arthur Fenn and great local collector djs like Rob Marriot, Chris Marriott and Richard Broughton) As I said earlier in this thread I'd gladly give a chance to younger DJs of the right calibre with Original records doing something good but a little different. The last 2 guys I can fit in to this category are Chris Anderton (hello Chris ) who ran Bretby and created a whole new fashion for records like Jimmy Soul Clark Champion" (then a £4 ex soul pack record) and recently James Trouble (hello James ) . I can't wait till the Kids discover the music again, prehaps they should re-make "Quadrophenia" and get a whole new generation into it. by the way, go to the European weekenders if you want to see the young generation dancing to Soul music club 18 to 25 and Well into it !! Rob
  10. On F**ck Tonto we're rumbled, where's Silver ???
  11. Des , why ask the question when you already know the answer, been in any lifts with Beggsy lately ! Rob
  12. A to Z Its happened to me as a DJ locally (I'm DJing) when Ive been called into work or shifts have changed, thats the main reason i stopped taking advanced bookings as a Dj unless I am doing it as a favour and know I will be on the right shift even if i get changed around. Friday nights are really bad. But I know where your at Ted Rob -M- Looks like i've started something with the "Z" list
  13. da da da daddda dadadarrrrr I fell into a burning ring of fire------- rob
  14. I know him, big mate of phil kingswoods and he DJ'd at the early MrMs all-nighters as well. Big collector in his day, but not interested anymore, spoke to him loads of times over the years, still lives locally to mansfield and tells some great tales he used to scratch his name in the dead wax on records so look at your classics and you might find one of his old copies, Rob
  15. Keith Money, served his time imprisoned on an oil rig, but what a great guy, collector first and made the grade as a DJ big style. Rob
  16. [i can assure you I've been to a lot of little nights in pubs in Manchester over the years-The Black Lion that Joan and co used to run, nights run by Steve Cato,Darks,Alan,Chris and Carlos' Taste of Honey that have played music as good as or better than any all niter. Just look at the names you mention on there, some great DJ/ collectors with great taste in Soul, , so long as you know what you are getting BEFORE you attend, did you ever go to that Toilet place in Manchester ? You are every lucky in the area you live in to have a wide choice to attend and some good lads to boot. So put that in your pipe and smoke it.... its obviously a long time since you went out-the smoking bans been on nearly a year
  17. Aye and Iv'e heard you DJ at Cleethorpes Kenny, you're not telling the whole story, come clean
  18. Now there's a beltin' DJ Tony Smith, trouble is it was darn souff kenny !
  19. Run your own night then Ken
  20. You need to get out more ! Rob
  21. I'm off to the zzzzzzzzzzz list, enjoyed the banter, keep it going Rob
  22. Yes that is very true, there has always been a local "sub-culture", it used to be guys buying EMI Discs and bringing them back from the all-nighters to play at local mid-week youth club events round our way. Not evryone has traveled, can travel or needs to travel. But if you are going to do it locally do it with style and above all lead don't follow
  23. Don't go giving people ideas Ian
  24. Just had a quick look at next friday's events on here and I counted 104 DJs on at the long list of events that are listed for that evening, now thats a lot of DJs for one night and not all events are listed on here. You could say the scene has never been healthier, but I still think something got to give Rob
